  • Every setup has it’s pros and cons….. We often get asked why we chose to go with a hybrid that not only has a pop top, but also opens up at the back for the bed section. In this video, we run thru the roof and bed setup, plus add in some details on the anti-flap kit that we use on our awning. I hope you enjoy it! Please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions and feedback on our videos.

    Great to see you guys travelling with a camper which actually makes sense to tow rather than the ‘monsters’ most seem to have to have.

      Yeah, we’ve seen so many big vans in tough positions….. we love our little hybrid and it has gotten into some pretty hectic 4x4 tracks and remote campsites!

I'm looking at getting away from our camper trailer and leaning towards hybrid, Soooo many different ones being brought into the country. All our kids have moved on now so the JAWA looks the perfect set up for us. Cheers safe travels.👋👋

    great vid guys if you want to make popping the roof up a little easier we just cut some cubed steel to size to use for leverage works great and you can put a bike grip on one end to make it look a little fancier keep the vids coming

    Have you had any trouble with heavy rain leaking through the pop top? We are looking at a similar hybrid and want to be sure we wouldn't get rained out in torrential rain.
    Your videos are just great, so good to watch!

      We didn’t have any issues with water ingress with this van. Jawa do insulate and seal these vans well. I have heard issues reported from other manufacturers customers

    Good video just shows U some of the problems with these 🇨🇳hybrids to many safety pins clips to loose & damage to panels with not folding back clips @ bed area noticed on other videos & needing a partner to give u a hand with bed & having to crawl all over the bed to make it only 2 ft more & you can get a hybrid with a fixed bed😎

    G'day guys, my wife and I were looking at a 19.6ft caravan but that would exceed our GCM of our Dmax and it looks like that idea might be a bust. So lately I've been toying with the idea of a hybrid and yes there's a bit of work involved in the initial setup, like you just showed us it's not a deal breaker by any stretch of the imagination.
    Thankyou for the great video and as always enjoy and stay safe 👍👍

      Yes, I just look around at each stop we’ve had and can’t workout how half the setups are meeting their GCM/GVM and ATM… I know most tow vehicles are capable of towing higher numbers, but that doesn’t help if you need to make an insurance claim!
      Even with our setup, we came within 200kg of the GVM with 260kg of ball weight

      @@empty_nestadventures Jawa state a ball weight of 140kg for the Infinity 13 Escape...does it really go up to 260kg once loaded?

    • @empty_nestadventures
      @empty_nestadventures  Před 2 lety +1

      @@carabreingan7187 totally. TBH, our van is 2800kg loaded and full with water. If you had the ball weight at 140kg and loaded, the back would be super heavy and sway all over the place at 90-100km/h…. Proper load distribution has the ball weight at 9-11% of total weight. Don’t be afraid of ball weight providing it is in proportion with the ATM

    Did you need to insulate the pull/ fold out section? As we have found a lot of condensation under the mattress (soggy mattress) and draft cope through the corners and in the cavities of the draws?
    Love your videos.

    • @empty_nestadventures
      @empty_nestadventures  Před 12 dny

      Hi Shannon. In the year we travelled in this van, we didn’t have any condensation issues. The Jawa bump out did have insulation, but we also took measures to reduce it as well- open zippers slightly to allow air to flow, microfibre dried the ensuite every night, kept it wiped down on every travel day etc… given we basically moved from site to site every 2-3 days, the use and changing environment probably helped as well. Seems some vans when stored for a long time seem to have condensation issues and we sold this van as soon as we stopped travelling

    Thanks for the video! We are just about to order our Infinity - did you choose the mud terrains all the all terrains…our car will have ATs but didn’t know if the ATs that come with the Jawa would be the same quality…

      We ordered mud terrains. TBH, will swap them over as soon as they’re done. The MT’s have done some tough off-roading and haven’t let us down.

      Yes it is! We love it, there’s so many different ways to configure them to suit your site. Just be careful you don’t leave some of them lying around when you leave….. we may have done that at one stop

    With having the fold out back do you find you have any dust get in through that area or rubbing on the panels leaving marks on them, also how do you block out the sun on the window over the bed. Would you buy this van again if you were to do it again? I think we would like a small kitchen inside for those bad days when you just don’t want to be outside but an outside kitchen is a given as this is where we like to be, any recommendations? Cheers.

    • @empty_nestadventures
      @empty_nestadventures  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Hello. With the fold out bed, we had zero dust ingress. Even on some of the worst roads in Australia. We did have a dust reduction system that I think helped. As for rubbing, very minor over 50000km travelled.
      For the internal kitchen, we travelled with a small butane burner and her boil for this very reason, although we mainly had awesome weather. The rear window had a built in blockout blind, just like all other windows. Would we buy the same van again- absolutely for the trip we did. Next lap, we will do less moving every couple of days and longer stints in each location. We will probably go for a slightly bigger van and potentially a solid. This is because we’ve done all the things we needed a smaller and compact van for.

      Hey Col. We found that if you get some taughtness with one hand on the vinyl, and the. Clip with the other hand, there was a good amount of awning under the clip. Can’t remember any situation where the wind unclipped the antiflaps
