    Hopefully this video will help out beginners about what to do with negative rake scrapers or standard scrapers.
    Again , I like standard scrapers but this new to me bevel angle from Steve Jones really does work well, as efficient as standard scraper.
    If any more questions feel free to ask.
    Enjoy

    Will try these out when my confidence has increased as I am still an early stage novice to turning.

    You always seem to answer my questions even before I think of them! I had wondered how the negative rake scraper differed from using a skew, and you said that the point of the skew is less robust because of the angle- perfect. Your negative rake scraping on the side of that blank really made some cotton-candy like shavings. The biggest thing I learned is that I need to sharpen my scrapers a lot more than I have been!

    • @tomislavtomasicwoodturning
      @tomislavtomasicwoodturning  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Scrapers do need sharpening more often then other tools as they rely on burr to do all the work, thank you very much for watching

    Thank-you for this very objective view of the negative rake scraper as well as some of your approaches for sharpening both negative rake and regular scrapers. I have a square end scraper that is going to get a bit of a radius as a result of me watching this video; it think that will improve its usefulness and make it much safer to use.

    Yep. Constantly messing with NR scrapers is a pain. I tend to use mine for final shape tuning. If I want a really clean cut, from a fresh, full sharpening with honing and burnishing I find that I can use a given scraper for only a few minutes before I have to re-hone and re-burnish the edge. And... I can do about 3 re-honing/burnishings before I have to (or should) hone everything off and go back to the grinder.
    If I did commercial/professional turning, I think I'd have to have several of the same-shape NR scrapers or sell my NR scrapers and get straight scrapers.
    Good, videos, Sir!

  • @christopherharrison6724

    Of course it only really matters what angle the tool takes the wood off.ie the angle you hold the tool on the rest.

    Yet again another brilliant lesson. I am curious why Richard Raffan has such a dislike of negative rake scrapers.

    • @tomislavtomasicwoodturning
      @tomislavtomasicwoodturning  Před 6 měsíci

      I think he don't dislike them, but usually people praised about negative rake scrapers like they are some magic tool,where they are just little safer scrapers....and on other side tell bad stories about standard scrapers where in most cases is user error and with little understanding about how they work they can be just the same safe....
      For me they are another tool tehnique under my belt and if any situation need different methods, I have the source to deal with.....
      Hope that makes sense 😅
      Its just another way of doing ☺️
      Thank you very much for watching and that you support my work 🤗

    I find that when I use scrapers, negative rake or normal with rolled burr, the finish looks and feels great, but then when you apply a finish, I can see what I call 'micro torn out grain'. You can't feel it, but its high-lighted by the finish.

    Thanks for (all) the specialized/narrow-subject videos! At what RPM are you using these acrapers on that maple? Was the wood dried? Hard northern maple? (In North America we have soft and hard maple varieties.)

    • @tomislavtomasicwoodturning

      It is hard maple, we don't have many variations of it but mostly its hard maple.
      I don't have set rpm for scrapers or wood...I always turn the rpm to fastest/safe speed and use all my tools that way unless some specific situation....
      This was probably turn around 1600rpm...its smaller blank
