    I live in the UK and have recently bought a 1980 Camaro Z28, so these videos are a lifeline, as no one here knows anything about them. They all drive their shiny Euro-Boxes! Good video! Just lay under my hotrod tonight with your video and did the same thing. Videos like this are a life saver as getting the parts and instruction in Ireland can be a nightmare sometimes. I made sure to remember to wear goggles and the gushing ATF. If you start the vehicle briefly before pulling the adapter the fluid loss will be less. The converter will fill and lower the sump level. The converter drainback raises the level above the adapter.

    • @DavidJWarEagle
      @DavidJWarEagle  Před 4 lety

      You’re welcome! There was a recent comment about starting the car and cycling through the gears right before pulling the housing. This is supposed to draw more of the fluid up into the torque converter and valve body so you won’t lose as much.

    Great video, the repair manual does not go into detail on this particular installation. I wonder did the adaptor housing seal prevent the transmission fluid from leaking even without the speedo cable attached?

    • @DavidJWarEagle
      @DavidJWarEagle  Před 7 lety

      Anthony Murphy Yes, the gear seal prevents the fluid from leaking around the gear shaft and the o-ring seal prevents leaks between the driven gear housing and the transmission case. The cable only screws on to the driven gear housing but there is no seal between the cable sheath/cable threads and the driven gear housing. Thanks for the comment and let me know if you have more questions. Thx!

    • @anthonymurphy34
      @anthonymurphy34 Před 7 lety +1

      That's great to know David thank you. I'm going to re- grease the speedo cable before I hook everything up. My theory is that the pinion gear teeth wear and break when there is resistance either from a dry speedometer cable or old trans fluid ingress into the cable conduit.
      Best regards.

    • @DavidJWarEagle
      @DavidJWarEagle  Před 3 lety +1

      @aladwanit Před 3 lety

      I did count the teeth, the number is 35 the the speedometer was shaking in the gages, i did change it to 40 teeth. Everything hook up on the truck but i did not drive it yet. Is it going to be fine ?
      The big problem was leaking oil all the time , but now it is stopped .

    • @DavidJWarEagle
      @DavidJWarEagle  Před 3 lety

      Your speedometer will be wrong by changing the gear to a different number of teeth. If the speedometer was correct before then I would replace the the gear with a new one with 35 teeth to match what was there before.
      If the speedometer needle in the gauge is still shaking then I would try replacing the speedometer cable. I had to do that on the car in the video because one end had broken off and wasn’t fully engaging which was causing the needle to jump around. I don’t know of that will fix your problem but it’s probably worth trying since a new cable is relatively inexpensive.

      @@DavidJWarEagle So...I ran into a few concerns. No trouble getting out the housing but I noticed the seal that was in there bears no resemblance to the new seal. Our housings are the same part number so I'm pretty sure the new seal is correct. I'm thinking someone has been on there before maybe and used the wrong thing. Also no retaining ring😯 I'm not sure how critical that is other than holding in the seal while you push the gear through. There doesn't seem to be any groove for the ring to sit in unless it just is held in by its own tension. What do you think? Lastly I count 35 teeth on my gear. Doesn't there have to be at least 36 according to the numbers on the housing? Unless I'm counting wrong I did it three times. If you send me an address s I can send you the picture of that seal that was in there it's interesting. Anyway, did your seal installation work well?

    David, I have a TH400 in my Chevy G30 van (with a Winnebago on it) and the driven gear housing looks different. It is in two pieces, attached to one another at an articulating joint that can rotate 360 degrees and with an attachment point for two wires. Any idea what that is? I haven't seen anything like it in other videos or photos I have seen. Not sure how to attache a photo or video to show you.
