1978 Firebird Project Speedometer Gear Choosing and Install (Ep.10)

  • This episode starts out with a leaking speedometer gear housing seal on our 1978 Firebird's Turbo 350 transmission, but when we decide to replace the speedometer gear with a more appropriate one things get a little more complicated. The speedometer has never been quite accurate and we will do some number crunching to figure out the best combination of gears to give an accurate reading on the factory speedometer.
    Dates of filming: September 12th, 2018 (Speedometer Gear Removal)
    September 24th, 2018 (Speedometer Gear Reinstall)
    Song List (Order of First Appearance):
    0:01 Lone Trail - Silent Partner
    5:06 Mysteries - Dan Lebowitz
    8:41 The Hours - Topher Mohr and Alex Elena

    The numbers on the speedo housing indicate which gears are compatible with the housing . The bore in the housing is offset depending on the odds of the driven gear to get proper gear mesh . While putting a 34 tooth gear in a 36 tooth housing might work , eventually because of the mismatch it will strip the teeth . Use a speedo housing with a 34 on it and will last forever ! Love your channel .

    Very informative. Very helpful. Wish I had found this a week ago when I didn't know these things. I'm repairing TH350 leaks on my '81 Trans Am and spent a lot of time finding the right speedo gears to best match my 3:23 gear ratio and stock tire size. Going with a 15 and 36 tooth combination and installing all new seals. My speedo housing is exactly like yours. Thanks.

    if you wonder why the seal was in the wrong direction its simple . When those seals started to leak it was because the gear shaft was wearring out and at the time you could only get the gearshafts at the dealer and we all know how much a part at the dealer cost . so people re-used the same gear but flipped the new seal in order to avoid the new seal seat to end up in the same wear down spot as the old one . problem solved and you could continue for a few thousands miles this way . The only problem with that method is that a seal seat is made to retract on the shaft from the pressure created by the warming up of the ATF fluid creating a thighter seal in the pprocess . if you flip it then the pressure from the ATF temperature will cause it to expend outward instead of inward like it does when its installed in the right direction . I've told my clients back in the 70's and 80's to stop doing that and explained to them how seals actually work and that doing that is only a short solution to stop a leak and will cause an even greater one in the future because of it and that by flipping the seal you open it to contaminations coming from outside and that can create accumulations of dust inside the pumps of the trany . Even if a trany filter is made to filter very small particules it has its limits and some dust particules are even smaller than the filter can handle and a build up of it may take a lot of time but will eventually lead to trany failure

      And the plug is machined offset center for the plastic driven gear, this allows for gear mesh adjustment. Like a cam. The shown tooth counts on the plug are indexed for where to stop counter clockwise rotation adjustment to those common sizes.

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife Před 4 lety +1

      @Lassi Kinnunen You're exactly correct, and on another vehicle I have had a speedometer recalibration box that did exactly as you've described. The difference being that Jeeps (at least Wranglers, so anything sharing much with that platform gets the benefit too) are insanely well supported. So, it's like $12 to order the correct gear for a Jeep and another 5 minutes to put it in. You can't mess with the electrical side any faster or cheaper than that.
