Ruben Amorim has been gaining a lot of praise for some time now, and it’s easy to understand why all of the big teams are interested in making him their next manager, Sporting’s extremely offensive possession football has taken them to the top of the Portuguese league, and are averaging an incredible 3 goals a game so far this season.

@@pysiters Because is common saying the name of the team and from where it, when just the name is not enough to identify the team. The Portuguese also do it with other teams. Portuguese don't do it with Sporting because they just call it Sporting and everyone there knows what they mean... but they say "Vitória de Guimarães" or even call it "Guimarães" when Guimarães is not a part of their name. With their neighbours Spain they always say Atlético de Bilbao, where Bilbao is not on the name of the team (zerozero for ex. says the name of the club is "Athletic Club de Bilbao" and is not correct). There are many other examples...

@@redman9pablo I could see him trying to take maybe Gonçalo Inácio or Diomande to Liverpool. Particularly Inácio, he is very very good in building from the back.
As a Sporting fan and an aspiring young coach, I can tell you I learn from Rúben Amorim every match and every press conference: not only tactically, but also on man management, leadership, communication, etc. The team plays phenomenal football this year, and I still harbour a little bit of hope he will stay another season with us.

Im really worried on how we can replace him, before him we havent had any decent manager apart from Leonardo Jardim for 1 season and Jorge Jesus (decent but not great, has a leadership and comunication issues)...

Sounds alot like how Liverpool has been playing, also the same problems that have haunted us. With the solid team and a few reinforcements for aging players I think it wouldn't take too long for Liverpool players to adapt to his tactics.
Yep. Reason why is that our football - all throughout the club, has had Portuguese influences since FSG appointed Inglethorpe back before Brendan. Yes it was shaped by Inglethorpe and Ljinders who are not Portoguese, but they are both strong proponents of portoguese football- and with Pep being the assistant manager- you can see the portoguese influence on the pitch.
Pep spent 11 years as assistant coach at Porto alongside millionaire heir and playboy, turned football manager- Andre Villa-Boas.
If you look at our players also- we love portoguese-speaking/influenced players as well- from Firmino, to Thiago, to Jota, to Allison, etc..
It seems FSG has ideintified this as the brand of football that closely resembles the football associated with Liverpool traditionally(the "Collective" is the sum of the individuals), and that gets our supporters fired up.
For all the criticism I sometimes give them- they do know how to run an organization and how to make excellent appointments, that will in turn also make excellent sub-appointments. All recreated in FSGs image.

You missed that Sporting PORTUGAL usually plays a crocked 4-4-2. Rarely you will see Catamo and Nuno Santos playing at the same time. What happens is that in fact the 3-4-3 where on one of the side assumes a more defensive position working as an almost 4 in the back, while the other joins the attack. Also Pedro Gonçalves, which plays a lot more often than Paulinho, plays as an out of position 10, giving balance in to the middle field and creating doubt in the wing. If you watch the latest game against Benfica you will see how he has the role of blocking Di Maria when he lays deep to launch the attack. Rotation is not the key in Amorim's approach, rather balance and patience. When pressed playing to Gyokeres is key to stretch the opposition and produce goals in counter attack.

I get the idea of using players on the wing to open up space to pass through the halfspaces, but I'm seeing way too many cases not just in the prem of fullbacks having clean opportunities to deliver great crosses and opting to pass backwards. I don't like seeing it and I think getting greedy for higher value chances is one step forward and one step back. When crosses start happening it's typically teams getting desperate for a goal instead of a carefully crafted chance.

Thing is: We have been playing alot through the wing backs because teams are desperate do defend the middle against us. So yes, we use them as decoys but Amorim found a way for them to be one of our most important players on attack

Thanks for this video. I've never herd of ruben amorim. I've always wanted either de zerbi or nagelsman as liverpool's next manager. But now, ruben looks like a good replacement to me.
If you ask me if I'd rather have Gyokeres or Amorim for the next season, I would choose the the coach. That in itself shows how important he has been for our club!

What they could try to strengthen their midfield overload is continuing to push one of their cbs into midfield as a dm during sustained possession as well, not only in build up. If they lose the ball, they can thus also counter-press more effectively with a defender pressing as well.
Exactly, thats what Amorim will do with Liverpool
i think liverpool already has the players profile that fits amorim's style of play. the only thing liv need is 1 or 2 LCB in the back three and thats it all the position is covered. the fluidity of amorim's tactics is also just like how liv is playing this season

my opinnion is that a low block highly sturctured defence play (low block compact 442) can disrupt the attack and detroy them in counter

I am a Sporting fan and I can tell you that Rúben Amorim's main quality is not just being a good tactician, it is, above all, being a great communicator and an excellent human resources manager.
This does not mean that he will be an excellent substitute for Jurgen Klopp and that he would have the same impact as him, but it is wrong to say that he is just "a good tactician".
@@FootballMeta That guy just waffled. "Find a way to connect with the players" is self-evident if they're adopting your tactical principles. As for "connecting with fans" for some reason, all succesful managers seem to "connect with the fans".
He has that already at Sporting
I personally don’t think that analysing Sporting’s tactics based on the games vs Atalanta will give the clearest idea of how Sporting plays because, although we played Atalanta 4 times this season, they were by far the team who caused Sporting the most tactical difficulties, causing Amorim to slightly change the way Sporting plays in order to avoid Atalanta’s M2M marking. No team in Portugal plays like that, and Sporting doesn’t play against anyone as we have played against Atalanta.

i think his tactical approach would benefit possession playstyle type of teams such as Barca. Liverpool has been playing counterpressing for a decade now.

@@user-cb3ko7qc4y you have to understand the dynamics of football tactics. teams prefer to sit back and play a low block defensive line when they play liverpool. these teams rather gave the ball to liverpool than risking getting out of position. thus with the possession percentage.

Tbh Atalanta are a very good counter attacking side their free flowing quick one touch pass going forward and very direct are really really good… proves they beating Liverpool 3-0 away from home.. especially when you played high defensive line like Sporting and Liverpool you will be exposed.. defensively Atalanta are very patience and not rushing to get the ball..
I think he'll do best at Liverpool - they play a similar way under Klopp and play with very aggressive wing-backs, his strategy should fit right in
Few mistakes in the video:
- Its Sporting or Sporting Clube de Portugal
- Altough Paulinho has scored many goals this season he hasn't played very often, Sporting doesn't play with a second striker but the wings collapse onto de middle. Its Pedro Goncalves that has been playing in the left, sometimes even Trincão when Edwards is playing well
- Even though you are correct that Sporting is most exposed when plays are interrupted in the middlefield, most of sporting league goals came from set pieces, which is odd since Amorim uses this tactic for a few years now and this is the only year where its showing that weakness
Serious questions: What are some of the downsides to having Amorim aa manager?
I think one of his best assets is his adaptability, he has always used the 3-4-3 but he has changed the way he plays a lot, in his 2020 title run he resorted to slow build up, wing play and defense focused football, and now in 2024 he has a much more paced attacking and central playstile, which is proven by the stats.

@@andrewwright4195 Always a 5 at the back without the ball, the 1st line of pressure usually changes depending on the opponents, sometimes 5-4-1, sometimes 5-2-3, even saw 5-3-2 in some instances
Though I'd love to see him at Chelsea, I don't think we have the players for his system right now so I'll go with Liverpool

After watching Klops LFC lost 3-0 to Atalanta... while my SCP only lost by the minimum goal diference. He is already missed. if you gotta go, you gotta go! I think that is more important for SCP to keep the administrative managerial structure for the next 40 years. From President Frederico Varandas and Hugo Viana's team, the real winners on hiring Ruben Amorim.
I think Chelsea should definitely go to Amorim because they need to rebuild a style of play and they have a squad that is too bloated to build a specific strict structure. Ruben can make a good meal out of that soup, and his tactical flexibility in the offensive line will positively reflect on the performance of players who like to play in free roles, such as Sterling, Madueke, Palmer.

Amorim does a lot with a limited squad. Benfica has far better options and squad, but had many problems this season and has been very inconsistent, only getting better at the end, against Sporting ironically. Amorim was a Benfica player and has the seal of approval of most benfiquistas 🙂

As a Liverpool fan, it struck me that they push their outside CBs wide with Coates in the middle. Does Coates get exposed in 1 on 1s or with balls in behind given his lack of pace?
Not really he only exposes himself that way if he knows he has someone to back him up and even then his maturity and captain status makes those actions almost unseen on his side
