Why Pochettino's New Tactics Are Exposing a Major Issue

  • At the start of the season the biggest challenge Chelsea were having was scoring goals, there was a clear difficulty in progressing the ball through the lines, and their reliance on crosses meant they were struggling to create meaningful chances, whilst also not taking advantage of the chances they had. But recently, they’re attacking numbers have been improving, averaging nearly double the amount of goals compared to the start of the season.
    But as their attacking numbers have trended upwards their defensive issues have become a serious problem, with the back line increasingly getting exposed in their recent matches, dropping important points in questionable ways.
    Essentially, Chelsea are still the inconsistent team from the start of the season, but the problems have completely flipped. To understand, we need to take a look at the changes that Pochettino is trying to make.

    I generally like the idea of covering a team that has weaknesses where not everything goes well. Covering highly successful top teams is done enough. And this way you can actually learn a lot more about football in a realistic way.
    I also like that you didn't talk exclusively about tactics but also individual quality/mistakes of players. It's just way more realistic that way and allows you to empathize with a manager like Pochettino. I think he is a good manager but Chelsea is a difficult "project" for any manager.

      @@FootballMeta I look back on Lampard's first managerial stint. A lot of the dropped points back then were due to individual errors as well: Kepa, Zouma, even Thiago Silva, Rudiger couldn't even make the first team because of his erratic nature. Tuchel arrived, these errors were 'magically' gone.
      Sure, players are to blame for individual errors. But when it becomes a pattern that is not addressed throughout the season, it falls on the manager. May it be communication, structure, tactics, etc.

    Well i think the problem in defence is three things:
    1. Injuries with our defensive midfielders in lavia and ugochukwu
    2. We mostly have slow centre backs in disasi, badiashile, silva and maybe colwill. Plus our fast centre backs in chalobah and fofana have had their injury woes.
    3. Caicedo mostly played on the right while enzo played on the left meanwhile it should be the other way round. Enzo plays on the right to form a triangle with palmer and gusto with his strong foot able to play the ball between them while caicedo plays on the left to enable him defend with his strong foot.
    Either way it would work sooner than later and we are trying to adapt in situations like this. Nice work on the channel by the way. Keep it up 👍🏾

      I wouldn't use ugochukwu's injury as an excuse for now. He didn't make much of a difference when he wasn't injured at the start of the season. I'll have to put some blame on poch's structure: If you beat Chelsea's press, it's easy to pass through the midfield pair especially since enzo isn't that mobile (similar to jorgi).

      @@dyoutube439 another thing is that, enzo whenever playing with Argentina never plays in a double pivot. He's always surrounded by the likes of MacAllister or Lo Celso, and De Paul who specially De Paul is a running beasts who has the energy and defensive awareness to win most balls back and never get caught off guard. I feel like unless this problem gets addressed Chelsea will have lots of problems as neither the other 2 players out wide (mudryk/madueke) nor the palmer nor jackson can defend very well nor should be doing that. So I'd rather try to sacrifice Mudryk or Madueke, or play with Palmer as a false 9 and another midfielder dropping Jackson. Also they have to train their playing from the back with the goalkeeper and their zonal/man marking awareness from their Fullbacks and number 6 so they are tougher in defense.

  • @mungurk18
    @mungurk18 Před 23 dny +37

    Thanks for highlighting how most of Chelsea defensive woes have been personnel issues and not structural issues. I find it interesting that whenever Poch plays a double pivot of Gallagher with either of Caicedo or Enzo we have our best games of the season like the Gallagher-Enzo pivot against Liverpool where Enzo had arguably his best game of the season on MD1. Earlier in the season after Caicedo joined Poch was playing a Gallagher-Caicedo pivot with Enzo at 10 that may explain our better defensive form earlier on. But Enzo wasn't very effective in the 10 so he got put in the pivot with Caicedo and Gallagher in the 10. Gallagher is more effective than Enzo there but isn't the best, players like Chukwuemeka and Nkunku who could probably fill in at 10 have been consistently injured. The Caicedo-Enzo pivot as you pointed out probably coincided with our dip in defensive form and with Gallagher not very effective in the 10 Palmer was given more of a free role on the RW where he could move around and drop in midfield to create chances. Poch also had the option of playing Palmer or Mudryk in the 10 but with neither having as much work rate off the ball as Gallagher, playing either ahead of a Caicedo-Enzo pivot would have probably been an even worse disaster. As we saw against Sheffield or even 1st leg against Manchester United where Palmer was in the 10 ahead of Caicedo and Enzo we lacked control and succumbed to a disappointing draw and a loss. Recently against Everton we saw a pivot of Gallagher-Caicedo again with Palmer in the 10. We controlled the game better, scored six and kept a clean sheet for the first time in 13 matches having conceded a minimum of 2 goals in each of our last 7. I wonder if this is a template Poch will lean to again during the remaining matches due to Enzo's fitness concern.

      Brother you have highlighted it perfectly. And to add on when nknuku plays the 10 he could easily open up play more for Jackson or whatever striker is out there next season. I think Enzo could be a bit of a liability going forward if we decide to play a double pivot going forward, but in the Everton game Caicedo and Gallagher highlighted how our midfield should operate

    • @aquail5101
      @aquail5101 Před 19 dny +2

      He doesnt learn, I've been saying for majority of the season enzo caicedo together does not work. Gallagher is also super inconsistent at creating chances up front so why Poch plays him on the wing I have no idea. He should be playing Gallagher Caicedo in midfield together at least until our defence gets more organised/experienced whilst having an actual left winger. The whole squad was terrible against Arsenal yesterday but even vs City he doesnt keep the same structure that put 6 past everton AND kept a clean sheet. Sure Im not just blaming Poch because if Jackson could shoot at all, we beat city but we should have went more at them. They were tired so a fast winger like mudyrk or even Sterling who always plays well vs city would have made the difference. I just don't think Poch is a good enough coach to bring us out of the problems we have but the players also arent good enough either in some areas. He needs to play to strengths that have worked and hope for points that way. Hes happy to drop expensive mudyrk all the time but won't leave Enzo out the team unless he's ill or injured.

    Your analysis is well done. Hence the solution is laying in the way he rotates the following 4 players. He should start Caceido, Ghalager and palmer depending on the opponent, or Enzo, Ghallager and Palmer on other games.
    One of the center back must try to slightly move forward or sideways to allow the keeper to be also involved accordingly. We will ha a balance against the lowblock teams as well as the open play teams.
    With the quality that we have, we will be able to score and not concede a lot as we have been conceeding.

    Great video man! I think Chelsea need 2-3 more signings for the first team with experience in some areas that they lack both quality and experience. CB (Thiago Silva is getting older and doesn’t suit a high press team anymore) LB (Chilwell hasn’t been consistent with the injuries and his quality has dropped a little due to that + Cucurella is not good enough) and ST (You need someone with a little more experience than Jackson to lead the Attack, even though I think Jackson is a great player) maybe a different winger if they sell Raheem, and then you bring all the injured players back (Reece, Fofana, Nkunku, Lavia) then Chelsea can compete for top 3 in the Premier League next season

    Knowing Poch, we should get a target man for deep blocks. I recall Llorente having a mamoth season at Tottenham a while back. Someone aging and not really insistent on starting, Chris Wood would do. Adds prem experience and leadership.
    Also a cm who is box to box and mature. Dream player is Rabiot, he also has the physicality Prem needs but should be expensive. Alternatively, a replacement for Gallagher advance role who has workrate but infuses creativity, Morgan Gibbs-White can be a good player to provide this while still being young. But thats a 70M+ player given Nottinghams investment.
    For the backline, Cucurella leaves and if we sell Maatsen, we can get a decent future option to compete with Chilwell, someone like Quentin Merlin would have been great as he can swip in great deliveries. France has plenty to look at and Gusto has shown this.
    CB- We should replace Thiago SIlva. Perhaps get our former players, Tomori or Guehi. They are top and offer speed so transistions shouldn't bother us much after.
    Knowing my club, this would not happen tho

    Decent video. Though a couple of things to add. Palmer has actually rarely played as a 10 for us this season. He probably should have and has generally been excellent in the few instances that he has played there but it hasn't been a regular occurrence. Gallagher has actually been our starting 10 for most of our games and much like when enzo played there he limits the attacking potential of the team imo. His overly enthusiastic pressing is a big reason why enzo and Caicedo usually have so much space to manage. In terms of the individual errors, there is virtually no pattern and sequence to anything we do and there are frequently very limited passing options in our buildup. The lack of a rehearsed pattern and overeliance on improvisation leads to hesitation, confusion and ultimately seemingly basic errors.

      Not every 10 has to be a playmaker. Gallagher as the 10 has worked especially when he can lock down a creative 6 ie. Palhinha , Rodri etc. Offensively in Poch's system his job is to get into the box and score goals from crosses. He has done a good job of that.

    • @darylayertey6925
      @darylayertey6925 Před 23 dny +4

      @@rampanswallo not every 10 needs to be creative but every 10 needs to consistently add something to the attack and the fact of the matter is that Gallagher simply doesn't. In terms of offensive output he is probably one of the worst 10s in the league. Pahlinha isn't a creative 6, he has one assist across all his league appearances for Fulham and sporting. Rodri is the caliber of player worthy of that kind of treatment. I don't think it's a good idea to handicap part of the attack out of fear of the threat of the opponent's 6. But even if it is, it should only be reserved for those "creative 6s" instead of virtually every game even against the Sheffields of this world. I don't doubt that he is doing what poch is asking of him and doing it well but Poch's system is bad. He has done his defensive job ok, though his presence has stopped us from consistently leaking goals. But in terms of getting into the box to score crosses he has done a very bad job at that. He has only 3 pl goals this season.

    Fernandez is not cut for a two-MF-pivot in the Prem. The ball moves too fast for him; he's also small and leaves large swathes of land undefended.Surprisingly his dribbling through the press is quite mediocre; he gives away about 20 balls/match. To make matter worse, his subpar performance forces Caicedo to constantly mop-up after him , which is a real pity: Caiceido has great potential going forward. This has become glaring in the last few games when Connor deputized for Enzo. Connor efficiently covers a large area, defensively, which frees Caicedo to push up the field and contribute with runs and one touch ball deviations. Enzo should not be automatic starter, regardless of being a world cup winner and all that.

    In my opinion inorder for better Chelsea next season need to deal with Injury problem they need to buy experienced 2 central defenders ,1 central defensive Middlefield who can partner up with E. Fernandez, 1 experienced left wing and right wing
    Loan players like - Badishile, Chalobah, L. Colwill, Chukwumemeka, R. Lavia, Ugochukwo, C. Casadei, Mudryuk
    Sell players like -M.Sarr, ziyech and farewell for Thiago silva and lastly I would like Lukaku in the starting lineup.

    Honestly, there is not much Poch can do, a solid back 3 in possession is what nearly every team uses successfully to fight counters. They need better defenders. And this doesn't mean buying Inacio and Mancini and every in-form CB out there, but instead repurposing players. Shift Caicedo back to CB. Experiment with Mudryk and Moreira as full-backs. Chelsea has enough depth, they just need to start using it.

    The problem will be that they will probably have to sell Gallagher in the summer to avoid FFP troubles, and Thiago Silva will also probably leave. So that's pretty much all your leadership gone. Boehly seems allergic to buying anyone older than 22, so I can't really see them having a better season in 24-25, despite the brilliance of Palmer and the improvement of Petrovich and Gusto particularly

    A lot of this isn’t right. We’ve only played a back 3 this season when we’ve come up against other teams also in a back 3 (like Brentford). We’ve mainly played 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 with Palmer coming inside from the right or Gallagher as the #10 or one of the midfielders. It was really only against Everton that Palmer played centrally, and that was mainly because Gallagher had to play deeper since Enzo was out.

    @demongs7481 Před 22 dny

    Play Gallagher at 6 to give Caseido more room for error. Gallagher is extremely intelligent and reliable but he is a "play it safe" type of guy hence he struggles in areas that require risking with the ball and a lot of times will try to avoid the risk altogether. He has the skills, the technique and the physic he justs lacks the guts of risking the team to make good play. Also he strives in a team with a good anchor man, a play maker a cut in winger and a high line my full back as it allows him to make decisions using the process of elimination, drift into the wide area to make deadly crosses, use his body to protect the ball and lay it of to players who actually want the ball, get into scoring position and protect his defence incase of a counter where the full back has moved high but Chelsea don't have that. They buy they do have number 8 players who can build up the and create chances and fullbacks who a comfortable on the ball during the build up phase. So why not just give him a simple job and let the 8s and the fullbacks do the rest. This will maximize the abilities of all the players and benefiting everyone while compromising him. He is a team player so he doesn't mind

    • @sp_blaze4170
      @sp_blaze4170 Před 18 dny

      Gallagher is simply not good enough. The fact that he plays it safe every time he gets the ball as the 10 completely kills the attack

      @demongs7481 Před 18 dny

      @@sp_blaze4170 thank you for specifying the real reason why he is the current best option for the Number 6 role. Until we buy a proper number 6 he is the best option Caseido and Fernandez have costed the team by taking risks in the wrong place i.e the our defensive third but Gallagher is a team player as seen yesterday when he realised we are losing and there is no one progressing the play with Cole Palmer out of the team and then took responsibility and tried to get the team forward as much as he can.

    • @sp_blaze4170
      @sp_blaze4170 Před 18 dny

      @@demongs7481 we must have been watching different game because I did not see him try to play forward at all. His game is play it safe on everything, every pass can be predicted where he’s looking to go. Caicedo and especially Fernandez isn’t much better but Gallagher is just the anti to progressive play

    • @demongs7481
      @demongs7481 Před 18 dny

      @@sp_blaze4170 the 1-2 with Madueke, the 2 crosses that nearly ended at the back of the net, the 2 switch balls on for Gilchrist and one for medueke and the 2 ball give aways one stolen by Trosad and one on the line where he tried to win a foul, and that was him trying to progress the play but you didn't see it so let us ignore that so I can repeat my point. The real reason why he is the best option is because he provid the security for Enzo and Caseido to take risks and play the way they wish to play because he is a team player and will provide the sense of security for those 2 to play their best football knowing if they loose the ball he will recover it
