It takes a lot to rattle the League of Legends GOAT - but clearly what’s been said to him has pushed him to his absolute limit.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this kind of abuse towards players in Korea, so let’s unpack the whole situation…

Small correction from me: I said T1 have only missed out on Worlds qualification twice when it's actually been three times -- 2014, 2018 and 2020.
Also you stated they have been eliminated from the playoffs which is not true.

Sending death threats is already bad enough but targeting his family and friends is just way too much, like why are you targeting a person’s family for absolutely no reason and think that’s ok? Man hope Faker’s mental state is ok and his friends and family as well, poor guy already has a lot of pressure.

Faker is what the League's community is supposed to be. I never saw him rage and he's playing rage inducing games (Jump King for ex.). He is the king for a reason like you said, He's not just a really good player but also a humble person.

Online bullying, especially to the extent that Faker have and is still receiving, really need to be dealt with before things get really horrific. So many people die by either committing suicide becuase of the constant negativity and harrassment they receive or actually getting killed by some deranged online stalker.
Also, those T1 "fans" are crazy, sending death threats to players and staff, even going so far as to dox them as well.
You know what's fucked up, too? This is scarily normal with Korean celebrities in general, and... honestly, when your life's put on the line, unless you're a police officer or a soldier, who signed up to take things like this, no one should have to deal with this.

Especially with how high suicide rates are in Asain Countries, since mental health isnt really talked about as much and seemed to even be frowned upon. Hate comments can definitely take a toll on someone, especially as a influencer who is constantly exposed to such things.
Many people committed suicide but there is nothing in place to stop it. Especially because korea loves leaving kids alone. Sullie, the celeb mentioned in the vid, took legal action against couple ppl. One turned out to be a minor. Did the kid learn? Nope. Even if they fine 1k, not enough.

He's been a victim of hate crime since he first won Worlds in 2013, that's nearly a decade of random and unspeakable hate. Not just he, but his family receives unwarranted death threats as well. He has been refined and classy all throughout, he doesn't speak out the way other well-known players do. This definitely has to be done, if not by him but by someone else for him.
This will also benefit so many other people.
Nasty comments online are really bad and all, but saying it’s a hate crime is watering down the meaning of that phrase, and is pretty disrespectful to the people who actually suffer from it in real life.

There are cunts who send stupid death threats all of the time and the authorities can’t do anything about it because they don’t have enough to go off of. It’s unfortunate, but it’s the reality. It's worth noting that South Korea has incredibly strong libel laws, that definitely go a little too far in protecting the victim as it can be used to stifle free speech. But when it comes to death threats and harassment we need stronger laws in the West.

Let’s not ignore All of the coup(s), riots, and civil unrest/wars in other countries due to them being police states. The west (I’m assuming you’re referring to North America specifically) is far from perfect, but it’s not as bad as people who’ve never been and only believe what they hear through msm and social media. Coming at freedom of expression/ freedom of speech is absolutely insane to me as it’s one of the best aspects of American culture.
Before anyone says that he's just butthurt and not a big deal, watch the video first and then realize that he's been enduring this type of treatment since 2015, probably even 2013 when he first rose up to fame. It might seem odd that he's suing his haters only now when it's already happening before but what's happening during his early days in the pro-scene is a lot more tame than how it is now. It's just regular criticism before with some talk shit like "Shaker" "Washed" "Old" etc but now he's being bombarded with death threats every time they lose or every time he plays bad. He's not just any League pro, he's the face of the league and his popularity in Korea is comparable to KPop artists that actually experiences the same as Faker (Stalkers, Paparazzi leaking their address, etc) and knowing how hard Korean fanboys/fangirls worship their respective idols, it wouldn't be a surprise that some people are actual psychopaths who feel safe slandering people behind the screens
Interesting take on this, and I completely agree. Alot of people look up to the famous and praise them like they're literal Gods, but quickly forget that they are still human. Faker is no exception, and I hate how he has to take this kind of action against these people. This shouldn't even be happening in the first place too. People go crazy over others, like Rockstar's and singers. I was at a fan meet and greet for the Lumineers and I just treated them like they were human beings. Even got to shake hands with Wesley. I asked him if he had run ins with any crazy fans and he replied "Absolutely, as a famous band, you're guaranteed to get those people." My point is that we should really just treat celebrities like regular people. They say that celebrities are not your friends, well change that. Become friends with them. Treat them like regular good people.
This is so true, especially since he doesn't seem to be the guy to get under his skin. I think that those who made those threats must've crossed the line to the point where it got to him personally.

People in the west that go on normal forums like reddit don‘t realize how extremely toxic online communities can be in some asian countries like Korea and Japan. I’m sure he ain‘t sueing people for calling him shaker or a bad player, but for some violent threats and defamatory stuff.
Yeah, the West may suck for a lot of things, but sucking at being a toxic online community is one thing I'll gladly take when "kys" or "cancer" jokes is the worst thing people can come up with. It's child's play compared to the religious internet zealots that the East has.
Korean 'fan' toxicity is some next level shit. I believe it's pretty bad in Japan as well, but if you saw this year's MSI, hosted in Busan, it painted a really clear picture of what the Korean fans were like. They cheered for T1 only when they were winning.
They clearly hated China - despite the Korean announcer (who is an absolute legend at building hype) doing his best to hype up the Chinese players, they were insultingly silent. I know China had to play from Beijing, but they were still showing their racism there. The only time they cheered for EU was when they were beating the Chinese team. They weren't happy when G2 beat T1 in the group stage. The Busan library memes became a thing because of how deathly silent the crowd was when T1 wasn't winning. When T1 lost to RNG after a hard-fought 5-game series, the T1 players were met with total silence when waving to the crowd.
Every other region that has hosted an event like that has been amicable in defeat, cheering on the victors even if they weren't the home team. EU cheered on FPX for their victory and supported G2 in their defeat in 2019. China cheered on for a Korea vs Korea final on their home soil in 2017. It must feel really bad for the Korean players for them to only be shown any appreciation when they're winning. Doing their best isn't enough.
@@midastheunwise2423 To be fair, in any other sport, fans wouldn't cheer for the opposing team either. I can understand not cheering for someone else. The clear toxicity is when they don't cheer for their own team just because they're behind or make a small mistake. Like a good play afterwards is negated by the fact that they have to catch up somehow and they still focus on the gold deficit instead of seeing that play as a possible turning point. It's practically comparable to an anime fandom.
@@Marrangutan You're probably right, but I always thought one of the nicest things about the 2019 worlds was that despite Europe's best ever hope for a 'legit' World title being crushed in a 3-0 defeat on home soil, the Paris crowd were still letting DoinB & co have their moment and politely cheering for their victory. It was very bittersweet as an EU fan, but I wouldn't swap that for that mentality for a more traditional sports one of us vs them.
You're right about anime fandoms being similar though. It reminds me of Gabi in Attack on Titan. She's a genuinely great character that explores what happens when radicalisation and reality collide, but everyone hates her because she did a bad thing that made them sad, and refuse to acknowledge that she's in fact FAR more compelling than the person she killed - naming no names because I don't want to spoil it for someone random.
@@midastheunwise2423 I think one thing in the West is that we still watch the games or to see cool shit happening that we could try doing ourselves, and the storylines and who wins or loses is still secondary. Sure you'll have the typical fans who say things like "TSM are washed" or "West vs East skill gap" or whatever, but at the end of the day, we just want to see cool shit and can appreciate skill that we could try to emulate, no matter how hopeless that goal is. Hell, the West puts memes over winning at times.
The East (Korea and China) is definitely much more prideful (save Japan who is just glad to be there). Shit about honor to the country and seeing your representative losing collectively has them feeling like that player/team is a blight on their nation. It's sad to see that we're all a part of the gaming community, yet have such different views around what should just be entertainment, win or lose.

Faker is known for his title the unkillable demon king still he has human heart and emotions, everyone wants to enjoy playing video games but this hate they or we recieve was unacceptable.
Comments saying "man up", or "too soft" on this and other videos are ridiculous. It really is easy to speak when you haven't gone through it yourself.
I speak Korean so sometimes I see Faker hate communities and there are no words to describe the content that goes on there. They literally don't regard Faker as a human being. To them Faker is just some "thing" on the Internet they can unleash their own self pity and anger at.
On one side, I'm glad this happened. He has proven once again why he is such an iconic player and person by standing first in line against these keyboard warriors. They are going to get what they deserve.
Ironically, those same people commenting would call the cops if they received even half the type of threats that these "fans" gave. It's not just words to a player. Family was getting involved. KT was being sent actual weapons to their training facility as a threat. One time I commented about a player getting affected by hate from fans and a person wrote “you’re weak. He’s not. He’s not getting affected. You are.” It kept my mind busy for a long while to figure out. Well day by day I understand more that, that person is a huge baby behind an unbreakable steel man painting.
Another man also wrote “getting affected by the people on the internet is weakness.” Like we’re not human beings but machines with spesific modes. Man worse thing about gaslighting is it’s so hard to realize it.

This is something that a lot of korean players deal with in all competitive games. Within the rhythm gaming sphere, a number of korean players have suffered extreme abuse, harassment, all for the sake of making them quit. As what I have heard, there are groups of korean players doing organized attacks to mentally destroy top players, in hopes they quit and "get out of their way" so to speak. It's unbelievably disgusting, and I am excited to see T1 put the nail to horrible people that do this.
Honestly, I can't believe how this is a "regular" behaviour in korean culture. I thought that the korean dramas on Netflix, where women where constantly harassed between each others, and how they are also harassed at work due to their toxic cultures, that these were just that, dramas. Incredible to see that people in korea feel entitled to judge and criticise other people just because they are either someone you know, or a public figure.
Yea bullying culture is horrible in Korea. It’s especially prevalent in schools. Whenever it comes out that a popular celebrity or public figure has bullying allegations it is a huge deal because of how awful that label is and usually means these people have participated in physical and mental torture of other people.
This just shows how toxic (not all ofc) koreans can be, which is also present even in the k-pop industry

It's not the Koreans themselves, it's the agencies. Korean agencies of eSports, dramas and especially kpop exploit, verbally and emotionally abuse, and garner toxicity towards their talents them selves.
The fans only perpetuate the toxic actions of the agencies themselves towards the stars. Because if the company can do it, why can't they?
That reasoning alone is disgusting but it's even worse when you realize these stars are allowed to sue fans over this but not the agencies.

@@muufle i have to disagree, the gaming industry will never reach the toxicity of the kpop industry and not many companies can get away with abusing the players. Especially players with good skills and a stable fanbase. For an idol, skills doesn't matter if you don't have anything to back you up, that's why even when many idols are crazy talented, they can still be manipulated.. But for a pro gamers, their skills are valuable, it doesn't matter if their old agency is trash, as long as they're good they could find another oppoturnity worldwide.
Edit: the pro scene's issue has always been the fanbase and the community, this game already has an agressive and negative community, it's only worse when it's a competitive sport

Sometimes I miss the world before the internet and social media. Armies of teenagers without fully formed brains didnt have the power to just say whatever they wanted to anyone at all times in a space where you often dont have any notion of age, mental health, etc.

Lowkey the title is a bit misleading and commenters are getting the wrong idea - just a heads up to ppl about to comment "man up" "how is this a big deal" etc. it's not just people sending a hate comment or being rude. It was criminals sending real death threats and tracking down the players family members and harassing them. The criminals also sent them disturbing images, and a box containing a deadly weapon to the company. So its not really "toxic fans" more like "actual criminals" lol
I'm happy to see Faker taking these people to court. Make examples out of them because as Mike Tyson once said, "Social media made you all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it."
South Korea has the 4th highest suicide rate amongst all countries. The amount of online harassment that goes on in SK is crazy. I know back in February a twitch streamer by the name of Jammi95 self-deleted after getting harassed, which was going on for what seemed like a couple years straight. I don't know the details of why she was getting harassed but I know it's been going on for quite a while, even having a few mental breakdowns on stream.
He has all rights to do this like for real if you hate him hate him all you want just dont type something that will push him to his limits that he would sue you cuz of it take responsibility 😅

What most toxic league players don't know, is that they can literally be sued and serve years in prison, get a good lawyer, you shouldn't take harassment and death threats and ignore it.
Sue them for cyberbullying, cyber harrassment, cyberstalking, death threats, online abuse, etc etc etc.
Not only do you make some great cash, you can send them to prison (or even a mental institute if they have some undiagnosed disorders)

Does Faker need to constantly prove himself for people to criticize him this much? It's not like other players beating his records or coming close to what he achieved. He is still the one beating his old self glories.
Sadly, it's not as surprising as it should be to see such vile behaviour coming from the League "community". Toxicity has been tolerated and actively supported by Riot for too long, allowing such extremes to happen in the first place. I hope the Korean judges set an example and add a few zeros to that 700$ fine. Harassment like this needs a precedence case that makes ppl think twice about sending death threats online.

I like how people in the comments are saying it's just "words". Easy for you to say sitting in front of your PC not having any sort of presence in the social world; not like your family and friends are being targeted. Once you reach the level of Faker's popularity, then you will realize how difficult it is to face haters who come after your friends and family.
Maybe think about how Faker feels when his family or friends are being targeted than voicing out how you feel about this issue.

True. It's not "just words" when these so called fans are already taking actions to it by doxxing. When they have the information to his family, they have the chance to carry out their death threats. Faker's grandmother will not be able to defend herself if someone were to attack her. All it takes is 1 crazy stalker with a weapon and he might not see his family member again.

Now we know why his performance was off yesterday against KDF. If you look at the end in game 1 after they lost, Faker stormed out of his seat without interacting with the camera. Now it could just be him trying to get to the vod review room faster, but when you look at his performance in 3 of those games. You can't help but think that he must have a lot on his mind coming into yesterday's games.

I remember making a comment about how esports players are getting affected by insults and a guy replied “that’s because you’re weak. He’s not. So he’s not getting affected. You are.” Took me so much to figure out if it was natural or if it’s just me who got affected by these stuff but hey turns out he was gaslighting. Faker's the chillest person and I think the normal things said like "you're trash" is nothing to him or any other player, that's a normal trashtalk. But being a public figure and getting violent threats is a different matter. You'd actually start feeling paranoid specially to this day where people can get information about you online and people are more crazy than ever you just can't expect what they would do. So I think legal actions are actually a good call. Also, koreans should really be more grateful T1 alone have represented korea and won 3 times, can't they just appreciate it and support them.
