Why are local news people like this more willing to hold candidates accountable than any newsperson at a national level?
More money more problems, and it turns out a lot of them are moral.
Because the corporations don't prioritize manipulation of local news.
They are not as pressured by lobbies. The more visible you are and the bigger your reach is, the more you will be able to serve as a vehicle for propaganda, or on the other hand, you have to walk on egg shells. If a newsperson is deemed as confrontational, they will have less chances to give interviews that give more ratings, and even being sacked. That's what happened to Mehdi on MSNBC. He countered the arguments of Israeli mouthpieces, and got sacked.

Because the local news person lives there and isn't rich enough to avoid being impacted by the day to day tasks of local governance. Like her car gets stuck on the way in to the studio for the day, she ain't calling in a private helicopter to come pick her up, she relies on having clear roads preferably pothole free

@@Robert_Bob_Bobrob not to mention if they define it too narrowly, even with their own slant to it, they will lose large sections of their supporters that respond to the word. Ultimately, those that respond negatively to the word ALL have their own individual hatreds that they fixate on, and anything outside of that really just doesnt get them up in the morning or to the polls. So targeting hatred by just labelling something woke is much more useful than actually defining the term for any type of accuracy or usefulness in conversation.

The corruption in Juneau has led to budget cuts to the DOT resulting in understaffing. The equipment exists, but no qualified plow drivers to operate.

The lady who wants to fill all the open positions in the police (hilariously caused by a Republican mayor) along with all the other unfilled muni positions is a serious breath of fresh air.
His other scandals include trying to turn off the water fluoridation, having the cops raid a hospital to try and "rescue" a COVID patient so he could take horse paste only to raid the wrong facility, and trying to instigate a coup against the assembly by having the cops no longer provide protection to meetings while his henchmen turned off the public feed.

I just moved to Anchorage this past October. It was my first Alaskan winter. The first time it snowed up here we had record setting snowfall and the roads were an absolute disaster for almost a week. But the real priority should be getting rid of “wokeness”.
If as a rule those accused of being "woke" automatically responded by calling their accuser "incompetent," I think that would work fine.
It doesn't mean anything. It's just a cultural signifier that reactionaries use to set themselves apart from an imagined enemy.

Four years of pure MAGA chaos. His mishandling of COVID was an epic fail, his corrupt administration had a new scandal every two weeks, and he treated the houseless worse than you'd treat animals. When I was there for a medical emergency in summer '22, you could see the smoke from one of his shantytowns that was actively on fire for days from the center of the hospital campus. And it's really ironic what he's associating "woke" with now, because in 2020 his fans were defacing his (Jewish) opponent's campaign signs with swastikas.

Yep. Lifelong resident of Anchorage here. I have never seen the lack of snow removal so severe until these past three years. Its embarrassing. The city website has even go as far as saying neighborhoods won't be plowed for at least 84 hours after a massive snow storm.

Notably Anchorage has a long running problem with it's handling of the homeless. Police regularly destroy camps in fall just before snowfall, for instance. Most politicians that have made it to office spend their time pandering to businesses and none of it addressing local issues.

The smart one might benefit by roasting that guy the way they do on the show. It is a paradox of Democracy that professionalism can be a disadvantage when people respond more to flippant remarks. Having worked in various sales positions throughout most of my work life, experience with people has suggested that they respond to a style of speech which is intelligent yet abrupt. Professional expression often makes people sound inhuman or uncaring. I suspect this is one of the reasons people are drawn to the Maga type candidates on such a mass scale. Splashing in some self-aware comments, mild profanity, thesis level abrupt generalizations to catch attention, guides people to listen to the argumentative, data related stuff that is acidic to attention spans. People on the campaign trail have a lot to learn from comedy and poetry. It reflects poorly on the abilities of our political celebrity that the chiefs among political communicators are these bigots and know nothings, like this loser in Anchorage, because they can talk to people on a mass scale. People with something to say should really enact similar tactics. It’s especially unfortunate because Anchorage is a big deal on the international stage for various geo-economic reasons. It’s not like this dude is mayor of Port Orchard, WA or Sedona, AZ.Anchorage is a sleeper powerhouse.

I think it is interesting that Merriam-Webster defines woke in two ways. 1. "aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice)" and 2. "disapproving : politically liberal or progressive (as in matters of racial and social justice) especially in a way that is considered unreasonable or extreme". Maybe Republicans don't have access to any dictionary, or maybe they just can't or don't read. Maybe reading puts them to sleep.
