I’ve been holding off replacing my Precision 5510 Xeon 4K but this seems to tick all my boxes.
Only thing I have found on the Dell NZ website is it’s not offered with ECC as the 5550 is, and only the 6 core Xeon is available (the 8 core is shown but comes up with an incompatibility error when selected...)
I’m hopeful both options will come shortly.
Ps to anyone not having previously owned the precision line upgrades really are easy- I replaced the keyboard on mine recently.

I like their keyboard tech as well. Even my old (albeit beloved) Vostro 15 3000 series has a solid built and yet soft to use keyboard.
Nice machine, nice video, I enjoyed. Even though the machine may be directed for a "imaging market" try to test the machines in Word and Excel.... Professionals like me also need to know the performance and speed of these machines also for office work !

watch out for heat. This is a disaster laptop from what I am looking at. The form factor is the 55xx of the 15' versions and the one that i had has bulging batteries after 2.8 years. Ofcourse, the problems is i crunch numbers on it day and night so that also helps it wear out fast. It also throttles the cpu just about every sec because of the number crunching.

So I’ve had the XPS 17 for about 3 weeks and have had major issues with it, getting a replacement unit tomorrow and considering returning it for the precision 5750. One of the biggest issues I’ve had was the Killer WiFi chip on my XPS which would work then stop for a day then work really slowly then stop, etc. with this in mind: 1) is the WiFi chip on the precision better than the killer? 2) is the Quadro RTX 3000 the mobile or maxq version? I talked with a dell sales rep and they said it was the mobile version but i was curious if you knew as the mobile have a much higher performance when compared to the maxq version
I'm looking to upgrade from a Precision M6800. Does this model have a docking station port underneath? I hate having to plug in 88 wires the minute i sit down in the morning!

Great review. It's too bad that webcams and especially microphones built into ALL laptops are so bad. Plugging in a logitech brio or other webcam makes a HUGE difference, but of course it's one more thing to carry around.
Is the 5550 just as good of an option?
I just bought a maxed-out Precision 5750 (8-core Xeon, 64GB ECC RAM, RTX 3000). About the price. Stop me if you already know this but the sticker price is for big companies - they can negotiate down 10% for a batch of 10 and feel good about themselves but with these babies if you talk to a salesperson and mention 'money being tight' they can do much much better. I got 30% off (full) list... about. That includes 3 years ProSupport etc. so it's hard to calculate exactly.

@@andrewmarcdavid Perhaps due to the current problems with the power supplies (105W vs 130W etc.), Dell might be happier to do good deals on these right now? My thoughts are that if there is a problem, having ProSupport means once they find it and fix it they will just replace the M/B or whatever - I've had new Motherboards put in before...

I went for the i7, Xeon AFAIK is more for long computational tasks like machine learning and similar. If you software supports quadros that's all you need 🤟
Hey I just got mine as yours !! But what I notice is that the temperature is going higher than 65 degrees while editing or performing high intensive tasks .
Is it okay ?
I don't own it but that is not bad in my view as far as it stays around 65 degrees but if that is happening at 50% CPU usage, it is an issue.

Have you noticed any battery drain while plugged in? Was eyeing the xps 17 before I grabbed my g14, people who have purchased the xps 17 and 5750 have been noticing it on reddit, testing shows they're only getting 100w charging out of the 130w charger. Dell can't seem to get their message straight on whether it's a defect or intentional.

Great video. I’ve been looking at this machine for a few days. Unfortunately, the lack of a number pad puts it out of contention for me. That probably sounds like a trivial thing, but my small business requires that I not only run processor intensive applications like Photoshop but that I also do a lot of number crunching, especially at the end of the year. I use a number pad all the time. If I’m going to spend over $2500 on a laptop, it has to have a number pad. Do you have a recommendation for a different laptop that would meet this need?

Antonio Zamudio, while I usually appreciate symmetry, it is completely unimportant to me in this case. Laptops are already awful for ergonomics so being shifted slightly off center when typing really makes no difference ergonomically. Finally, having to carry yet another external device when using the laptop on the go is simply irritating. It reduces the portability when you have to carry all of these additional devices just to do your work efficiently. Believe me, I’ve thought about all of this and a built in number pad is still a top priority for me.

i've been using the Dell 5750 for 2 weeks now, and my only complaints has to be the windows animations and the battery drain...i guess i tried every tweak possible so far to fix this 2 issues, and not even dell helped me.

I just found out about this laptop. And I'm dumbfounded at how this slipped past me. For 1100€ this is an incredible deal: 8-core CPU, 32GB RAM, color-accurate 16:10 UHD touch screen, RTX 3060-equivalent GPU, easy M.2 expansion, SD-HC reader, 97Wh battery, .... Comparative laptops like the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro start at 1400€ for a similar configuration (16" though). I really hope this can be a laptop for me.

AMD - what type of 32gb RAM did your engineering unit ship with?
CAD professionals are begging to have numeric keypad! We type numbers constantly while drawing lines, shapes etc while our left hand is busy with keyboard shortcuts, the right hand is for the numpad. This is an amazing machine for me, but this is a big deal breaker.

The placement of that power button is questionable because that's normally where delete is. I think I would prefer it as a dedicated button.
Pretty much all displays are 60Hz on normal laptops.

I'm doing Java Software development. No CAD or Graphics work. Should I go with XPS 17 or Precision 5750?
I'm doing some android development and Android Studio just requires a lot of RAM and Power. My old Surface Pro 4 can't handle it anymore.

Yeh..basically a recoloured XPS 17 But with Quadro Graphics for industry...which is just the business equivalent of Geforce RTX graphics , but with Professional grade Quadro Drivers installed.
However , now days you can also download either Professional grade drivers or Consumer grade drivers when visiting the Nvidia web site.
So, in a long winded comment nutshell...apart from the colour change.....err ...that's about it between the Precision and the XPS 17 versions.
It also comes with windows 10 pro, and has options for xeon processors. Both of those might be important for truly pro users. This wasn't mentioned in the video tho.

I just don't understand this strange trend of removing numeric keypad from even a 17 inch laptop. I'm pretty sure I can talk for many devs or people that use their machines for other work then just a/v editing or some multimedia stuff - then life without numkeypad becomes really painful, affecting work productivity rapidly. Pro AV producers use external audio monitors anyway, so why to sacrifice so much space in favor of inbuilt fancy speakers. And this is a pro workstation. So? Hm...
As a dev, I completely disagree! Offsetting keyboards wrecks the ergonomics. I very rarely use numpads. I would MUCH rather have a centered keyboard. On the other hand, dedicated navigation keys (pg up, pg down, home, end) near the arrow keys would be a HUGE improvement (or at least make fn-left & fn-right work as home/end , although I just reassigned alt-arrow keys to pg up, pg down, home, end.)
Instead of forcing others to use external speakers, how about you use an external keyboard instead?

Does this Precision have the power drain issue similar to the XPS 17? Also, a suggestion - you should cut the music in between the laptops when you compare the speakers (this is like Max Tech), which may be better for the test. Anyway, thanks for the video, and looking forward to the live tomorrow!

battery drain is currently "too fast" on 17" units (it draws only 100w instead of 135w), but still there will be drainage "by design", and with age you will lose performance in very short time, imagine with a 2/3yrs old battery.

Does it have touchscreen? Touchscreens are FANTASTIC, Im graphic designer and use touch to move layers on Photoshop, drag and drop files on windows 10, AND scrolling pages, it is the best and fastest way to work!
@Antonio Zamudio I worked many years with Imacs, had Macbook Pro 17´ since 2010, but changed to a Dell, top of the line, ad neve get back... I do things touching the screens like a phone, that is 2x faster.. I work on my bed and on the sofa, someday I will do a video to you all showing the agility of notebook touch screens... for example, I bought tennis online, changed my 2in1 to portrair, like a big tablet, or to select thousands of images on google, because Im designer, it is so much faster... point and drag files touching the notebook screen, is incredible

Same here. Dell are stupid enough to give their machines names like "workstation" and "developer edition" but sell them with a keyboard layout that's barely good for my grandmother to browse the web. (talking about the lack of dedicated page up / down / home / end). Until they fix it (again, after removing them, adding them and removing them again), the only laptop I'd buy is a ThinkPad.
@@nir8924 You are missing (in this case) the Rolls Royce of laptops... Buy a USB-C Numeric Keypad/Hub if it's such a concern, $50 on Amazon. I just ordered the 8-CPU Xeon with RTX 3000 and 64GB of ECC RAM - need the grunt to train AIs, need the Quadro for Tensorflow, need the memory for big models.
@@endintiers I get why you need such a machine but for me, I own a 2018 xps 13 (which has these keys) and I'm happy with it. As a freelance programmer I get to many meetings and days at customer sites and the xps 13 is great for it. I need a laptop that is both fast and light. It's just that ThinkPads are literally the only choice now (and they have terrible service where I live ☹)
@@nir8924 My other choice would be a maxed-out XPS 13 with an eGPU... But really I want a 17" because I'm a "Senior Active" programmer (>60 :-)) and I have to make the fonts REALLY BIG. 16:10 is also good for the hard-of-seeing too...

This is a powerful PC no doubt. For a workstation used for all kinds of productivity this machine should be designed with a full sized 10 key Keyboard design could use improvement. Also the camera was acceptable but the internal mic was a little distorted and muffled. Liked the way the machine could be easily opened and upgraded. Beautiful display. Also when you go on Dell's website to order this, it very clearly describes the (thunderbolt) ports one is getting with this unlike the HP website for the 15 inch Spectre which one has to guess how many thunderbolt ports one is getting when ordering a 15 inch Spectre. This machine should be designed with one less usb-c thunderbolt port and should have in its place a USB 3 port. Just a question: When you show the internal camera do you use the same lighting for each model or is it slightly different. If it is different then the comparisons between machines is not accurate. As always another great review.

6:45 slide missleading - main bottleneck in other systems is RAM. 64GB of RAM makes a whole world of a difference in export time. The other two laptops are probably only 16gb. That is a major bottleneck. There isn't nearly as much difference when you have the same RAM. You should've pointed that out.
I still don't understand why the Precision is so much more expensive than the XPS. It is difficult to configure the two machines identically, but you can get very close, and a New Precision is always several hundred dollars higher than a New XPS with the same processor, RAM, screen, and SSD. Other reviews have cited "better build quality," but I have no idea what that means, given that the machines appear to be similar in almost every way. Interestingly, if you look at Dell Outlet, the two machines are much closer in price. My hunch is that businesses are less likely to buy from the Outlet, so Dell must price them more competitively with the XPS.
Hi Andrew, good review, for future reviews can you run latencymon? Latencymon would show if the laptops are capable of running DAW applications without audio issues? I see no other CZcams reviewers benchmark or test laptops’ audio performance for use with DAW applications. Your music producer viewers would be interested to know if these Windows laptops have issue with audio latency with using DAWs.

Bearing in mind that my 5750 is a 6 core, 16GB RAM with dual SSDs (512GB/1TB) FHD setup it is nowhere near the spec of your review machine. This laptop was given to me by work to replace my dying 7 year old Asus G750JH and having used high end Sony and Asus laptops for years I found the following:
Pros
Performance is excellent.
Screen is great for me (FHD not UHD).
Quieter than my Asus (that's not difficult though!).
Much smaller and lighter.
Cons
No onboard USB or HDMI.
The HDMI and (single) USB dongle is cheap and nasty.
No RJ45 for wired LAN.
Trackpad has no dedicated left/right buttons and has dead zones in the bottom corners where left/right clicks won't register. This is "by design". WTF?
No numeric keypad.
Keyboard is poor for a £2k+ laptop.
Opening it is a pain, but perhaps because mine is so new.
It is a finger print magnet.
No manual webcam shutter.
USB-C connection for power.
In summary, I wouldn't buy this laptop for myself. I would go for the Precision 7750 due to connectivity, numeric keypad and the trackpad design. Of course, you can buy the £250 230W Dell docking station and use external devices which will solve most of these problems when in the office, but that defeats the purpose of it being a mobile workstation. IMHO.
Nice to have those ports you want but the 7750 is a lot bigger and heavier. Also, Dell has a USB-C dongle with hdmi, usb-a and ethernet that works well. I personally don't want numeric keypad as it makes the whole keyboard cramped and pushed to the left. I have a Precision 5520 right now which has been great. I use it with TB16 docking stations at 2 different locations, so it's nice to have the same setup at both places. Thanks for sharing your feedback! The FHD you got must give incredible battery life but I'm a sucker for the 4k screens now!
Of course there IS Thermal throttling.. To see for yourself set the unit on a block of frozen food and see how much higher your benchmarks are...!! Cinebench 20 without frozen food about 3350 setting on frozen food 3850.. Unless I have no concept of what thermal throttling is which may infact be true..

It's a big fail on Dell's part to exclude the keyboard numpad for a laptop of this size (including the XPS line).
No number key pad 👺. I have to reconcile myself to the fact that 16 x 10 laptops simply do not have number key pads. Sigh.
With number pad you either get a horribly cramped keyboard, or a laptop that is hugely wide. With the push for no bezels, number pads are probably dead.
If this was a 15 inch I would buy it.

My wife is a radiologist. There's no way this or any laptop would be used for "medical imaging" despite claims to the contrary by Dell marketing. There are many legal, logistical, and technical reasons for this. Perhaps dental imaging, where you review an simple xray, is possible. However, you can do that with any $500 laptop. Perhaps it's better to say the Precision is suited to scientific and engineering tasks but not medical.
I recall a radiologist once gave me classes for it and wow, he had a really ancient bulky laptop for his use/work case scenario. What would any laptop need to be able to fit into a proper l

@@omegamalkior1874 "Medical imaging" (the common use of the term in practice) is all about the professionally calibrated and binned specialty displays (Barco, etc) along with the software. You can use a Pentium II running Windows 3.0. You would be surprised at the ancient PC's my wife has used and she's worked at some of the most advanced hospitals and "prestige" universities in the US. Another close friend is the founder and CEO of one of the largest imaging centers in the US. He buys the cheapest computers but spends a fortune on the displays and constant regular certifications as required by law. Most imaging today uses thin clients and VPN access to a central database where private patient data is secured. The use case for the Precision w/ Quadro is engineering CAD for a handful of apps that leverage the driver. Everything else is Dell marketing fluff. Xeon's ECC memory is useful for datacenters and HPC but largely irrelevant for laptops. BTW, I'm not trying to call out Andrew. I realize he's only parroting what Dell marketing is trying to pitch. Unfortunately the marketing people often show a profound misunderstanding and are willfully blind of the real world.
I process large X Ray microct data sets on my dell xps 9560 all the time. It handles it no problem. You just need a lot of RAM.
I dont love the fact that you gloss over the fact that Dell even says this particular skill of the machine costs 5k$. Its marked down to what will be about 3900$ after tax but youre not reviewing anything near the base model.

So they painted the XPS 17 gray, call it pro in order to somehow justify the price and for some reason they couldn't even manage to put in an LTE modem because professionals don't need to be online, ever. Not to mention this should be standard in any laptop by now. Dell, get with the program, it's 2020. WTF.

Cannot understand any high rating this notebook as "for professional". No docking port, no numberpad, no easy access for servicing, no USB A port. A useless 4K display when a WQHD would make much more sense.
They took the XPS 17, named it "precision" to price it up.
As I stated in my review, its not for everyone.
They literally took the pro definition from Apple (regular stuff, just more expensive).
Speaker grills at this place is the stupidest thing ever. Dust, dirt, piece of hamburger - hard to clean!
