Porsche 964: 5 Signs I Have a SERIOUS Transmission Problem...But It's Not All Bad News

  • My new-to-me bucket list Porsche 964 has shown up with a MAJOR transmission problem...and now its obvious that I need to drop the transmission and send it out. This sucks.
When I first bought my gorgeous Porsche 964 C2 manual coupe in Amazon Green Metallic, I wasn't naive enough to believe it wouldn't need some work. They all do. However, there's a big difference between throwing on some new tires and replacing all the fluids versus having to have your G50 transmission rebuilt.
    Frankly, that's a vintage Porsche 964 buyer's worst nightmare (next to a blown engine)...but that's what's happened to me.
Yes, I have suspected there's something wrong with the transmission in my air cooled Porsche 964; however, after adding up all 5 of the symptoms I go through in this video, I have concluded that I need to have the transmission dropped ASAP and send it out to a qualified Porsche transmission rebuilder.
In this video, I'll take you through each of the 5 symptoms that have led me to believe I need to have the transmission rebuilt in my Porsche 964. I'll also tell you why I have decided to also drop the engine and have that sorted as well.
Finally, at the end of the video I'll reveal to you my true thoughts and feelings about what it's been like to buy a dream Porsche 964 only to have it show up requiring a MAJOR repair.

Where do I begin lol. Since I’ve mentioned in previous vids my experience .Feel free to message me on IG for details on mine (Same screen name as here)I will say the clutch pedal box is easy to rebuild and refurbish with new bushings and roll pin(it will break). Regarding engine I would assess the current drip situation most come from the valve covers which warp(especially after powder coat) so replace with Rennline covers, next it is a must you replace all 5 fuel lines in the engine as a preventative measure. If you’re going to change the spark plugs upgrade the ignition coils to 993 coils. You’ll only need two ignition wires with 993 and 964 ends. Check the starter while the engine is out. That’s all I can think of for now. Hope that helps

Can’t help on transmission, but will share a recent experience on my 964. The other day on start up there was a huge explosion sound from engine bay. I looked in the engine bay and the entire intake system has shifted position and become disconnected. Car was towed to the shop and my mechanic said an internal component of the distributor failed causing ignition timing to be off, which resulted in excessive pressure build up when I cranked the car on start up. Intake was blown out of position and disconnected as a result. I think 993 has the same distributor so you may already be familiar with the potential failure mode. Something to check as you are going thru the engine. Good luck and keep the content coming!

I would have the kitchen sink thrown at the car while the engine is out. My 997 C2S needed a new crank shaft seal. I had the flywheel and clutch changed naturally and whilst doing this the specialist discovered another leak. Had the engine dropped, replaced the tandem pump, water pump and numerous seals, gaskets and a few hoses. It made sense as the car was on a ramp with its innards on the floor although like you I was a tad pissed at the expense all at once. Luckily it’s mechanically sorted now with the next major job being cross cooling pipes and exhaust silencer brackets. Short term pain for long term gain and enjoyment is what helped me put it into perspective. Regardless of model 911, the wait will be worth it with smiles per gallon 😊

Another great video Will. Thanks for sharing, you have an amazing attitude on cars (and life). I bought my Amazon green 2 years ago and only minor problems so far after 3000 miles. BUT, I know they are on the way. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Will..
    Great content on the channel..
Since you are fortunate in most respects to have such a stunning item.. the necessary fix goes with the passion for excellence..
For me.. the transmission would be completely redone as needed .. as well as most of the service items of concern..
Then.. you can have the peace of mind and that “passion” we all enjoy when the machine dances and performs excellent reliability fashion..
Don’t just bit the bullet…chew it up and spit it out…and get the work done..!

Good video Will - enjoy your walking us through the questions you confront and steps you take with each of your cars.
I bought my ‘90 964 in 2010 with 70K miles. I’ve had a number of smaller issues over the years, but none as major as yours. Mine also came with lightweight flywheel and LSD; I’ve enjoyed both. We did a major set of modifications on mine at 180K miles.
Stock exhaust on the 964 is circuitous and lowers HP. As part of the modifications, we did a top end rebuild, set of B&B headers, CAT bypass, Webcam 993 cams, custom Steve Wong chip, and GT3 muffler. The car dynos at 262 HP at the wheels - about 308 HP at the crank.
As I’ve mentioned before, we also shortened the gear ratios. With the added HP and shortened ratios, the car is markedly more fun - a total blast - to drive.

Sorry to hear about the tranny. Having acquired mine a few months ago the list is long as to the changes I made. I would suggest as I have done most of the work myself with the engine still in. Changed the distributor (old belt to 2nd one), wires and plugs. All four valve covers to eliminate some seeps and messing with fuel injectors and suggest getting them cleaned. Cleaned everything with all filters changed and all fluids. Get the valves adjusted with the valve covers off as i is 15K item. Did a compression leak-down and a peek with a borescope... I did a few other things chasing gremlins like ignition switch, new alarm module, DME relay.

Its a beautiful car and I agree with the sentiment that it can take an extra 10-15% to get the cars sorted out during the initial ownership period. My experience with 993 ownership bears that out. I do find it interesting that the PPI didn’t at least point to some of this but then again, I think most are nothing short of a drive by assessment. Getting a Rennlist or PCA member to check it out and ideally drive it seem to be a good additional step. I admire your positive attitude but sense this car is a keeper so it comes with the territory. What I REALLY admire is your relationship with your wife. She’s a saint. Best put on a recent discussion thread on rennlist with someone about the pull the trigger on a new 993 purchase. He asked the group what their experience was with the greatest source of problems with the car…the best answer…your wife

Really sorry to read of your issues and admire the way you are handling it, I suspect the main thing is not let this issue spoil the car for you..? For sure the issue would be known about and more than likely the reason the car came to market.. Thinking positively, it might not have been available for you to buy otherwise, and clean low miles 964`s seem likely to be a rarity...?
I suspect your issue as you describe it is in the diff. In a normal diff only one wheel provides drive at a time. If both wheels provided drive when turning a corner you would get the skipping feeling you describe because the wheels turn at "different" speeds when cornering, the tighter the corner, the greater the "differential" there is between the number of rotations on each wheel during the turn. The inner wheel (nearest the corner) completes fewer revolutions than the outer wheel, which covers a longer distance to complete the turn.
The idea of a limited slip is to maintain drive to both wheels while allowing a degree "slippage" in the drive between the two driving wheels in order to prevent the skipping you experienced.
If any one of the wheels looses a degree of grip on the surface, the majority of the drive is transferred to the wheel with the best grip. There are pre-set springs applying pressure on friction material within the diff which determines the degree of slippage between the wheels at any time.
Use a model car mark a dot on each rear wheel and do a tight turn counting the revolutions each wheel takes to complete the turn..
New belt and bearings in the distributor seems like a good preventative maintenance measure. BTW it seems distributor belt failure may be caused by a gas created when sparks are generated. A Porsche modification to reduce this effect on the rubber of the belt, was to provide air flow via a pipe connected to the distributor... which your 964 may already have, but I would still carry out the replacements as suggested.

Yes, I am thinking the previous owner sold the car because he didn’t have the appetite to fund the work I’m doing. And yes, it has occurred to me that in a way this problem is part of the reason the car became attainable.
I went and saw the car today, and I absolutely love it. The time suck is really the only aggravation at this point but no way will it ruin the car for me 😄

Will. Congrats man. That car is beautiful. One of the best color combos IMHO for rhe 964. I guess I missed, or maybe it wasn't mentioned, but you are taking this in stride which is honorable. I feel your pain-bought a truck with a bad motor last year amd got stuck with the bill. I digressed however. Plugs, wires, valve adjustment, valve cover gaskets,, chain housing reseal, crank position sensor and/or engine temperature sensor and rear main seal if you do the clutch. Push rod tube leaking? Cylinder head gaskets dry? Personally, my 95 993 had a LWF amd I just didn't care for it vs the DMF. It just wasn't as "driveable" to me. Yes it revved slightly quicker, but no as user friendly I guess. Maybe consider replacing with the stock set up again? Looking forward to seeing the progress!Again, beautiful car! 👊

as for the ferrous metal on the drain plug, and the fact it made noises cornering, it sounds like pinion wear on the crown wheel in your differential. I'm guessing (and it's really just that, a guess) that the pinion shaft and crown wheel will need to be replaced. Yes, it's a full gearbox strip, but if that's the issue, I doubt any of the metal made its way to the gear housing.. it's probably all contained in the diff housing. So hopefully all your gears/syncros/sliders in the gear housing will be good to re-use.

I was super pissed when PORSCHE OF LARCHMONT sold me a MESSED UP Porsche 993 4s. It was my very first attempt at purchasing my dream car. The salesman knew the car was a mess but he had me going at first. The day I came to pick up the car was the day I realized they screwed me over. The car had a crap repaint, dents and dings all over, saggy rear suspension, cracked rear wiper arm, badly scraped front bumper (on the bottom) and the front bumper was full of dirt and old leaves. I demanded a refund. They called in the veteran screw man to try to convince me to drive the car home. I refused. They had to refund my money. After watching this video I do not know how or if I will find my second air cooled Porsche.

One way of rationalising these costs… I have a 964 and a 2005 vw gollf, even the vw cost me 1500-2000 euros occasionally to replace blown flywheel/ gearbox and then eventually turbo. The 964 may have some similar bills but my golf is only worth 3500 eur! Brian, Menton, France

Man, that sucks. I am sorry to read about your issues with the purchase. It has been my experience that buying used performance cars from consignment dealers is a "buff and push" situation. It is disappointing that the consignment shop you bought from (who is well know for selling air cooled Porsches) was not more forthright about the car and it's issues since they sell themselves as Porsche experts. Getting the mechanicals sorted to your standards from the get go will make your time with the car way more enjoyable. While the motor is out check/replace the spark plug wires, the power steering drive belt, motor mounts and any excessively weepy seals. All the parts that you can reach easily that are not worth dropping the engine to do again. Best of luck! That 964 is a beautiful specimen - I am jealous buddy!

  • @911engineguy
    @911engineguy Před 3 lety

You'll obviously be having valve clearances checked... I would pull the rockers out, and inspect both the rockers and the cam lobes for pitting. Take the opportunity to consider a slightly larger camshaft. Even if you don't change your cams, have your cam timing checked to see that left and right bank are still the same as chains can wear/stretch... You could also use a slightly advanced cam timing setting to give you noticably more grunt off the line, at the expense of top end hp... depends how often you plan to redline the car and how the car will be driven. Ie, if it's mainly a street and canyon car, I'd advance the cam timing.

Air cooled Porsche cars are deserving of the Porsche badge, this is a rich man's car, not to be confused with the low build cost new cars. The initial purchase price is always expensive, together with the fixes that are required to bring the car up to standard. Paying 30% of the initial purchase price on fixes, to bring the car back to life, is to be expected. A new ECU remap, air intake, LED headlamps, will make a big difference. If the gearbox needs work, do it.

well, ultimately if the vehicle wasn't inspected/serviced prior to purchase "I'd shoot meself!" as its a BIG over-sight & cost required on a newly purchased vehicle of any type... personally I'd test drive the car even before any cash changes hands, even better take someone who has knowledge of such car with similar mods, so they can cast a 3rd party opinion.... having to wait for a vehicle to be shipped is a big no-no
if the engines coming out do all the servicing requirements, even if its a major service type for peace of mind, change known gasket failure points, cam covers, sump pans etc coolant lines & potential hard lines known to failure with age etc fuel lines are pretty common, check the brake lines & so-on (change if signs of wear/age is present)
if you can upgrade parts to later models "some 993" parts can swap over, swap them as its newer & more upto date, whilst the engine's out check over suspension bushes & engine mounts etc even move forward & check the radiator & so-on.. in short check it all out & do the preventative work now rather then later that would give you more time to enjoy the car overall.

I wouldn't worry at all about the extra 450 miles, that's exactly what I would have done and you were right to re-check the drain plug. But I think you're being awfully kind about the seller, assuming that it was a shop and not a DIYer who may legit not have understood the issue or have had the experience to recognize that something was wrong. We recently bought a different Porsche (a 951) for our small collection, and the seller was a clear DIYer and everything we have found are clearly things that he simply did not know how to do (or had misdiagnosed) - no harm, no foul. But if a shop sold you a 911 with a bad transmission, I would reconsider whether or not to let the broader Porsche community know, not to point fingers but rather to make sure others are careful in dealing with the same seller in the future. Then again, perhaps there is value in good karma :) In terms of "while you're in there", I always regret not taking the time to really clean and spruce up the engine and engine bay whenever I have the engine out of our 911, but then again I am always super anxious to get the engine re-installed and get back to driving!!!

I have really been torn about “going public” about the seller as well as the shop who did my PPI because deep down, I am kind of a “do no harm” person. Yes they are both reputable and should have known but I took a risk and got burned. As I share in the video, thankfully I am in a position to repair the car and enjoy it to the max.

It sucks to be landed with an expense like this (I have the absolute T shirt on mine) but I like playing devils advocate. A LWF in these cars makes some noise at low speeds and the LSD in my ‘93 Turbo 3.6 was sensitive to the oil used. If the previous owner was hiding something I would be more suspicious of a clean drain plug that quickly fouled later on.

I hear you and thought the same thing initially. However, it could be that the issue was discovered on a fluid change. The fluid was replaced, the car driven for a time and ultimately sold. You are a good man Charlie Brown. However, the seller and the folks who did the PPI screwed you over intentionally and that is simply not cool. They knew exactly what they were doing and stuck you with the bill. If it were me, I would lawyer up and get them to pay for all or at least some of it. Your next problem is the transmission rebuild and this is where it gets tricky. Rebuilds can sometimes not go as planned and the problem is finger pointing. The transmission shop blames your mechanic, and your mechanic blames the transmission shop. Who is on the hook when you pick up the car and something doesn't feel quite right? I went through that exact problem with my old 911 and it was infuriating to try to get it resolved. I had a scrapping noise coming from the transmission area. The mechanic said its the transmission and the rebuilder said it's the clutch. I then took it to a different transmission shop and he said it was both! I was never able to get it fixed and sold the car for a loss. My advice: get a two year warranty from your mechanic that states "I will take full ownership of this transmission; including the clutch, oil, cooling lines..etc for 24,000 miles". Otherwise you will be in for a miserable time when something goes wrong. Been there done that.

Yes, they offered a marginal amount of money to offset the repair. I declined and have decided to just move on. The good news for me is the appreciation on the car will absorb the repair expenses. I plan to just enjoy this car and keep it forever so it will be less and less about the money over time. Painful lesson in trusting shops to do a PPI which are known by the seller and unknown to a cross country buyer.

Yes, I thought of this but have concluded there’s no way this happened. The driver picked up in California on a Friday and dropped off in NC on the following Tuesday. Simply not enough time.
Further, I drained the fluid, put in new fluid, drove it for 450 miles, checked it again and had tons more shavings on the drain plug. There’s an active issue, these problems build over time and it needs a rebuild, there’s no doubt.

I am quite familiar with the weak and strong points of these cars and am realistic about the expenses associated with getting them in top running condition.
A G50 gearbox which is actively shedding metal shavings is not among common, known and acceptable issues.
Contrary to what many think, air cooled Porsches are quite reliable and can stand up to years of spirited driving once put into correct mechanical condition.
So, to answer your question, given all of my due diligence as well as multiple conversations with the seller and the PPI shop, YES, I am shocked this issue exists with the car.
