  • British Columbia’s Kootenay mountains contain some of the world’s most unforgiving-and beautiful-terrain. The peaks, ridges and valleys of the region are remote, extensive and rugged, creating the opportunity for a backcountry experience like no other. Less than four miles as the crow flies from Retallack Lodge lies Antoine Basin, a heavily mined, yet seemingly untapped valley, especially when it comes to trailbuilding. Born from the Backcountry, a new film from Freehub Magazine, follows Thomas Vanderham, Veronique Sandler and the Retallack build crew as they spend a week camping and creating in this place of endless potential.

    Never gets old, watching Vanderham do his thing on two wheels! Truly an artist both on and off the bike. One of the top three riders I think would be real cool to ride with.
    Great overall trail vision/design, fantastic views, and film work. Hadn't heard of the female rider until this clip, but holding your own with Vanderham - my hat's off to ya!!

    Is BC just cool with random alpine trail building? Environmental damage isn’t a concern? This would never fly in the US.

    • @freehubmag
      @freehubmag  Před 4 lety +6

      @BlueDevilBrew Great question! As a rule of thumb, you should always have permission from the proper land owner before building any new trails. This project was done on the Retallack Lodge land tenure with all the appropriate approvals before any building was done. Environmental damage is always considered, and the basin this trail was built in has a long history with mining. If you look closely in the film you can see the remnants of old mine shafts, access roads, and piles of track, shelters and debris left from times past.

    • @BlueDevilBrew
      @BlueDevilBrew Před 4 lety +2

      Freehub Magazine thanks for the info. I had no doubt approvals were given prior to construction. Mostly just noticing a difference in land management between BC and US. Pretty much all the alpine areas in the US are federal lands where this isn’t allowed. Fun project, thanks to sharing.

    • @theGiver3
      @theGiver3 Před 4 lety

      Assuming the lodge owns the land, how is it any different from private land in the US?

    • @hobmarg
      @hobmarg Před 4 lety +1

      @@theGiver3 it's crown land (means the government owns it essentially) that Retallack has tenure to operate certain activities (cat skiing and mountain biking on). The operating/lease agreement lays out terms of what they can do. As Freehub said above, there's a ton of mining history in these valleys so it is not pristine wilderness by any means (but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be respected, which it clearly is).

    • @theGiver3
      @theGiver3 Před 4 lety +1

      @@hobmarg thanks for the explanation. I didn't know. I agree, even just watching this video you can feel the respect for the land. Incredible.

    would of been better and much less effort to keep the trail as raw as possible, im sure there's a lot of natural lips to hit in the way down .
