The 2022 Phillies Experiment Broke Baseball

- Hey everyone!
Before the 2022 seasons started, I made a video talking about the 2022 Phillies experiment. Through a historical lens, their projected defensive outlook made their playoff chances unlikely. However, not only did they make the playoffs, they nearly won it all. Today, we take a look at how they did it.

Seeing Harper on the big stage like that was so much fun to watch. That homer in the CS is one of the best plays of the decade no doubt.
I hope he plays in at least two more World Series before he calls it a career
I was there and just the atmosphere when he hit that. I will never forget that.
Absolutely. You felt like you were definitely seeing something special out of an amazing player. I got chills when he hit that home run and I'm not even a Phillies fan but I'm definitely a Bryce Harper fan
Considering he had to take time off because his elbow blew up and he took a Blake Snell heater to the thumb, it was nothing short of a magical run.
In the CS?
The World Series loss stung in the week that followed, but I have so much love for this year’s team. And I always will. A ride I’ll never forget
@ pp1994 - When you get a chance, get your 'faithful " Phillies' fans to show up down the regular season stretch next time, to support their team . . . .
@@enniswhalen2428
We do, idiot. No stadium in the country was more pumped than Philly.
@@enniswhalen2428 there were plenty of us there. Philly will always be a top tier sports town
@ jr 13. . - OK,I'll play. The frontrunners filled Citizens Bank park about half way on 9/09, 9/11 after a near sellout on 9/10 .They had another half house on 9/22 , leaving 15,000 empty seats on 9/23 ( 28,460 was their home average, ranking 16th, as they actually drew higher on the road ) , leaving 7,000 empty on 9/24, and 11,000 empty seats on 9/25.
Once the "Fightin's ' made the playoffs, I guess the loyal faithful figured out where Broad and Darien was located . . .

Philly clinches after San Diego = Phillies merchandise rose 4x what it sells when home games are sold out.
Cubs held the record for pennant sales year they won it all -- Phillies broke it in 24 hours.
Philly is ranked 8th in most profitable teams.
They also generated 78 million during their playoff run.
What saved them was (1) Their starting pitching performed as expected (2) their bullpen wasn't as bad as expected (3) MLB expanding playoffs (4) They got hot in the playoffs, but Houston was more talented and just as hot as they were
Their bullpen performed as it was constructed to at the trade deadline. Robertson and Brogdon wore down and Dominguez got hurt but they got their shit together in time for the playoffs and it made a difference. Eflin also pitched meaningful innings
I think they just got lucky and hot at the right time. FTR I hope they either stay at 3 wc teams or maybe go back to 2 divisions and make the WC series a true wildcard series.
@@rfe8nn2 I feel with Thomson as manager, they can actually get to the fourth seed. Won’t wrest the NL East from the Braves though.
They also had the easiest path.
And also the universal DH rule, for Bryce
No joke this video has aged incredibly well. The only difference is they were much better defensively this season. Your videos are so good.
Aged so well that the dbacks shut them up and shut them down 😂
As a Phillies fan I got so many chills from this. Great video!
Thank you!
I got chills as an astros fan
@@gavinhinojosa6349 gg on the World Series y’all earned this one nothing but respect from a Phillies fan nd Peña a stud
@@FelixlovesGod thanks man!
@@FelixlovesGod I have respect for your Phillies to so surprised they made it that far
As a fan of the Phillies who watched every single game they played. This video perfectly summarizes the Phillies season!
I watched about 85% of games this year didn’t see castellanous get one hr
I loved this phillies team so much, I'm so optimistic that we'll get it done next season.
@@Wes36Man he’ll be better next year. I’m not worried
Why do you invest so much of your life into a sport that's rigged
Did you watch the game of 5/7/22 when the Philkcos were ganked by the Mets scoring *SEVEN RUNS* in the top of the 9th to win 8-7?
If you did, you're a glutton for punishment
I was at game 4 of the NLCS and let me tell you I have never experienced something more electric in my life. CBP was indescribable. My dad called that Rhys hr in the middle of the first then I called the Schwarbomb literally right before the pitch. One of the best experiences of my life and so many memories from this postseason that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. What an absolute blast of a run the Phillies had
Bruh I was at game 1 of the NLCS ready for that same electric energy from my home crowd, y'all shut us up real quick
I was at game 3 and did the exact same with the lead off Kyle bomb
Almost won it all!
I'm sure you did lol
My friend and I were at NLCS game 4 as well and that was the best experience I’ve had at a professional sporting event absolutely unbelievable
Damn kinda got teary eyed watching this. I love my Phils no matter what, I’m thankful they took us where they did this season.
Revisiting this a year from now is wild.
As a die hard Astros fan, I appreciate seeing the narrative from the other side. Often we can only feel our own stories. Our own trials and tribulations. Seems like hell of a ride for Philly. With that said.. lest we not forget the decade of Astros suck, the pujoles home run, the white Sox sweep, and the Braves of the 90s. We Astros fans have been thrown through the ringer. We have our own story too. Congrats on a great season. Hopefully we can run it back in 2023
This video brought me to so any emotions. Such an insane ride. This baseball season had lots of ups and downs for the phillies. They did the city proud. All there's left to do is be ready for next year.
That video you made before felt like forever ago I didn’t actually expect them to do so good
this video was edited so well. Great job man
Thank you!
As a phillies fan I loved it. I was born in ‘03 so growing up 06-11 the phillies were amazing then ‘13-18 it was painful. Then we signed harper and I was excited. 2022 came around and I loved it
As a Phillies fan, this was a joy to watch. Thanks for putting it together!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it
Bryce Harper was playing at near MVP level before he got hurt. I honestly thought the man was going to defend his MVP from the previous season.
I can’t lie, I was so nervous going into the World Series as a Stros fan. Seeing a red hot team beating great teams in the postseason gave me 2019 vibes and Ik how this story ends, I’ve seen it twice already. Here’s to another great season for the Phillies, y’all played a hell of a postseason!
Thank you for actually being honest. I saw some Astros fan on Reddit say they were never worried during the World Series and thought they were in a more challenging series with Seattle. It's like "what??" You swept Seattle in 3 games and the Phillies won two out of three to start.
@@richardtheconquerer Yea bad take by that fan. Both teams were hot going into the postseason but the Phillies proved to be hotter. Seattle almost had us beat but couldn’t close it out. The Phillies were on a mission after steam rolling their way through last years champion so they had way more momentum over Seattle imo
As an Astros fan as well, I was extremely nervous after watching the Astros choke away 2019 and failing in 2021. After the first 3 games I told myself, here we go again. Losing another World Series to another NL East team on a Cinderella run. But the no hitter turned the series around. But I was still nervous going home for Games 6 and 7 up 3-2. We were in the same spot in 2019 and failed.
@@Adoublelan13 Thankfully we were able to close it out this time. I loved our postseason run last year but this year is easily (and obviously) my favorite postseason of all time
@@Adoublelan13 Yeah, I had thought it would be 'Stros in 6, but I assumed that would be after an early series lead, not dropping 2 of the first 3. Game 5 was as important as 4 for the momentum, it had been back-and-forth, so winning two, esp with the second being so close, felt good.
And in Game 6 when they brought Alvarado in to face Alvarez, I knew we had already won. Everyone in that stadium knew Yordan was hitting a nuke there.
That home series against the Angles was the turn around to their season IMO
After the "turnaround" they went from two games out of second to being buried 14 games out of second. They never had what it took to compete this year. Maybe next year will be different.
It was the turn around of the season , I was at the first game. After the lead off Schwarber HR the energy in CBP was different. You can see the entire team was playing lose & having fun
The Phillies defensively got much better as the season went on…adding marsh in center and Stott at short was key
all i can say is wow. thank you for this. this video was incredible. even though they didn’t come out in top, what a ride it was. this team captured emotion in me that i hadn’t seen since the likes of phillie legends jimmy rollins, ryan howard, chase utley, jayson werth, coke hamels, doc, cliff lee, and so many others.
Get hot in April and nobody will remember. Get hot in October, and nobody will forget.
Reggie Jackson just checked into the conversation..
And now with the HUGE signing of Trea Turner….they will be a force to be reckoned with! Can’t wait for next season!
Great video. I got chills watching this. So much emotion this past year as a Phillies fan.
We also have two pitching prospects that may have some huge potential this coming season too. We just might be firing on all cylinders in 2023 especially when Harper comes back.
In game 5, you had two almost identical palys. Marsh misplayed the ball in center field in the 1st inning. He got too close to the wall and allowed Altuve to take 3rd. Schwarber misplayed the grounder at 1st allowing another run to score. McCormick makes that incredible catch in center and Mancini steals Schwarber's shot down the line. The Astros were an elite defensive team and the Phillies defense was severely lacking and it made a tremendous difference.
Feels good to see someone acknowledging this. I understand this kid made this video because he knows it will bring him views from Philly fans, but it's such a stretch it's going to fall to the wayside as another unrealistic and irrelevant take. Yea the Phillies had a great offense that got hot at almost the right time, but what happened when they faced elite pitching and defense over the course of an extended series? Nothing. And if it wasn't for JV choking in game 1 this series would easily have been 4-1.
Not to mentioned, as soon as the Astros started showing the pressure their defensive woes started to show. I saw many misplayed balls in the outfield in the final 3 games especially by Schrawber. It allowed the Astros to take extra bases and keep the pressure going.
@@ragasha89 a 4-2 series is hardly a blowout that you make it sound like. All those what ifs could easily go the other way.
@@smithnwesson990 If Lance doesn't tip his pitches and give up 5 home runs the series could have easily ended in Philly. I'm not implying it was a blowout, but their offense was no hit in one game and looked very pedestrian in almost every other game besides game 1. Point being I don't think their experiment/strategy "broke" baseball. It performed well and almost reached the peak, but ultimately fell short to a much more traditional and balanced team composition.
16:41 chills. The reactions from the crowd was just amazing. Loved watching this live and gave me FOMO not being there despite being a White Sox fan.
As a Phillies fan this playoff summary made me shed a tear

Watching this, brought tears to my eyes. I remember Harper hitting that homer. Glorious video!!
Literally got chills at so many points in this video. Great work man!
this season made 8 year old me feel so giddy, i remember the 2010-12 team so well, it was awesome seeing this year happen. can't wait to see how the phils do next year, especially with the big possibility of trea turner joining the team
I saw 5 playoff games at the Bank during this improbable post season run. What a Ride this Team gave us Phans! Harper's NLCS HR in Game 5 still gives me the chills. This was a great video, well done, Sir!
Must be nice to be loaded
As a Phils fan, your video last year got me hype for the season. I really appreciate this follow up, and once again your analysis has me really excited to watch this team test the sport once again. I'm sad they lost the WS but this was an incredible season to watch after they fired Girardi
Of all that happened.. I know Harper's HR is atop memories -- but against the Braves?
6 straight pitches.
6 straight hits.
2 Homeruns.
2 different pitchers.
That was nuts.
Very well produced video. Great stuff man. Made me emotional as a Phillies fan.
People from outside Philly don’t understand what that run meant to this city.
What an awesome ride of a season and the playoff run is one I’ll never forget even if they didn’t win it all
Great job on this video. As a younger Phillies fan, this season was the most fun I’ve ever had watching baseball. I was born in 2003 so I got to watch the Phillies dynasty as a kid but you forget so much of that stuff after ten years. I fell away from baseball for much of my teenage years because of the drought the Phillies were in, but I’ve reignited my love for baseball that I had as a child, I can’t wait to see what Trae and Bryce can do for us next year
Thanks for this video man, I really needed it. Amazing season, I'm sure we'll go back and win the whole thing this time
What an excellent video. This Phillies team was so much fun to watch in 2022! I’m also watching this after their big free agent signings, so they’ll only be better next year!
Rob Thomson I think had a large part of changing things
awesome video, brought back such an unexpected, exciting time!
Thank u for this video. This year was so special to so many Phillies fans including me. We will be back
Video gave me actual chills. Great job
These videos are great! The only thing I would have to say about these videos are the pacing. Sometimes the explaining takes too long, and I like it! It makes it more clear to understand. Just oftentimes, I put the video in 1.25x speed.
This makes your videos enjoyable to watch, keep up the great work!!
This was a great video and very well put together!
Well done video. Thanks, I really enjoyed watching it.
Wonderfully put together video
Such a great video, and a season that I will never forget.
I’ll never forget this team. It was the first season since I’d moved across the county, away from Philly and it made me feel a connection back to the city. It even made me a little homesick, but I loved watching them play… except that World Series, man
Glad to see the follow up, great content!
Thank you!
Really well made video. This Phillies run will live in history. We came up short but the ride was unreal.
i’ve gone to eagles playoff games and psu whiteout games but the phillies stadium was rockinggg on a different level. it came down to the depth of pitching the astros had, defense was huge as well. Pena was their X factor
Hell of a video. Covered it all. And great editing!
This video dramatized the postseason run, and they did it well. This is a really well done video, great work
I loved this one man. I’m a yanks fan, but have a soft spot for the Phillies, and watching this chaotic roller coaster was pretty sick.
Great video ☺️ I know a lot of hard work and research goes into your videos. Keep the great baseball ⚾ content coming 👍
This video gave me goosebumps, not gonna lie. My first MLB game was one of the almost-swept-series against the Dodgers in LA, 12x10W in the extra innings. What a nice ride that was. Thank you, Phillies, for the memories.
I was at the NLCS clincher, sitting in the pouring rain (I got sick from being in the rain for so long). That Harper homerun makes me tear up. It makes me think of the fact that he said this is his city; he's really good at playing the crowd, and getting them on his side, but it was one of the first times he made it feel like it wasnt a show. He wanted to be here. I know we didn't win it all and we definitely were flawed and went on a slump in the WS. But this team brought the love of baseball back to Philadelphia and for that I love each and everyone of them (not including familia, hererra, norwood).
To get to the World Series you need 3 really good starters, a few really good bullpen pieces and a hot lineup. Which is what the Phillies had
Great 4th and 5th starters and great middle relief depth will turn you from a 90 win team to a 100+ win team but it doesn’t help you that much in the playoffs. People don’t really realize this when they talk about the Phillies. They had a roster that was built for the playoffs, not the regular season
this past postseason was when i first got really into baseball and watching the phillies come so close is something I'll never forget
I went to 10 Phillies games this season and was at NLCS game 5 and World Series game 4, it was an unbelievable season!
Fantastic video I loved it Great job
That Harper home run gave me chills and I don't even like the Phillies.
fr bro
Great video, gave me chills, coming from a Cards fan...
U can say it ended in heart break, but ill always look back at this run and feel the emotion of how amazing it was. I'll never forget this phillies run. It's almost as good as the 08 run.
So much fun to relive this season via this video. Hopefully we sign Turner in the offseason, and we find some way to sure up the pitching rotation (we got a couple of fantastic talents in the farm system that I'm really hoping pan out sooner rather than later). No matter what, this year's team went way further than any of us realistically expected, and I'm super excited for next season. When the Phillies are good, baseball is good
Turner was signed by the Phillies …
@@stevebabiak6997 I just saw this last night. LET'S GO PHILLIES
I think the other main thing that saved us was the trio of Eflin Seranthony and Alvarado in the playoffs… they pitched really well(other then the Alvarez bomb) and we we able to protect the weaker parts of the pen by getting great outings from the starters
Their starting pitching was terrific and stayed relatively healthy considering how paper thin their rotation depth was. Nola once again didn’t miss a start. Unfortunately, they went ice cold by the time the World Series came around.
i was at the game in philly where they beat the braves to go to the NLCS. maybe about 20 rows behind home plate. never have I been a part of a crowd so electric. one of the best moments of my life
I thought about your video literally all season. Unreal. Go Phil’s baby
You put this video together perfectly, was like a mini documentary

The forgotten thing was Nola had a Perfect Game for like 6 innings in the clincher. I also was at Game 3 and that was an electric game with memories that will last a lifetime. Great video, although it didn't end the way I would have liked this season was magical.
I'm a Phillies fan but Nola sucks. Bum had not had a winning season last 3 years and was horrible loosing last 3 games if the year. Have to trade him.

Losing to the Stros sucked, but we knew it was an uphill battle. This season came at a very dark time in my life, and it was an unforgettable and amazing experience that reminded me why I loved the Phillies so much growing up.
heck of a job. ty for gathering all this information.
The end of the series was a heartbreaker for sure, but I'm so proud of that team man. Hopefully they're able to improve even more in the off-season.

I missed my train to a friends birthday because I saw this video and couldn't not watch it, im gonna be an hour late....worth it. Loved this Phillies team!!
Wow! What a great video. I would love to know what kind of regular season impact we would have seen if Schwarber was batting 3rd or 4th in the lineup instead of lead-off. He has so many solo home runs it had to affect more than a few games where an RBI could have made the difference. In the end it probably didn't matter but still not a gamble I liked to see.
fun to watch this now again while we are 2 more Wins away from a return trip!
Wow great video. Hell of a run by the Phils.
Awesome video brother
Revisiting the video after the second game of 2023 NLCS, let's go philles!!
I'll really miss this team... they gave me so many memories...
I’m a Phillies fan, going into the 2022 season I said this is our year… to make the playoffs. I thought we were gonna make the wildcard and get eliminated in the wc round. That was the most fun season I’ve ever had as a Phillies fan, and I was there for the 08 ws and them runs where we came short. Even though we didn’t win the World Series, it was SO MUCH FUN watching this team play baseball in October.
I remember that Harper 2 run homer in the eighth. It was crazy, the emotionless face he had with the swing of a lifetime.
Great video. One thing missed was Thomson's leadership, which was huge.
I was in section 426 for game 5 of the NLCS.. That Harper homer was the most electrifying and euphoric thing I've ever seen

2022 Phillies is the first team ever to have 3 batters with 6 postseason HRs(Bryce Harper, Rhys Hoskins and Kyle Schwarber)
CZcams knew I was think of this video as the Phillies are absolutely crushing the postseason. Here's hoping they finish the job...
I don’t even remember where I was for the 2008 Phillies WS win, but the 2022 NLDS and NLCS provided memories that won’t fade
What a run! Most fun team to watch. Phillies 2022 was a wonderful time
The Phillies are going back to the playoffs! I came back for some nostalgia and this didn’t disappoint. Thank you for a good cry
I'm so grateful for this team. After a decade of misery, watching them make a run to the World Series was better than anything I could have asked for. No one can ever take this pennant from us.
Third place buried 14 games out of second. They were given a participation trophy that means nothing. Second place in baseball is first loser. Third place, well you get the point.
@@whitedeion598 You seriously don't think it's an accomplishment to make the World Series? Do you think any season that doesn't result is a championship is a failure? Why are you even a sports fan then? You must be fun at parties....
@@philly_sports1558 nope. Not an accomplishment. Baseball is a marathon, not a sprint. Cream rises to the top over 162 games. The Phillies showed that they didn't have what it took to compete over the course of the season. Anyone can win short series as we have seen over and over again. The playoffs have become watered down enough that they don't mean anything.
@@whitedeion598 You seriously don't think the playoffs mean anything? You seriously value regular season wins more than playoff success? God, what a loser mentality. I know that I value winning the NLDS against Atlanta or winning the NLCS against San Diego more than winning a random series against Cincinnati in the regular season. Your whole perception is backwards. You win regular season games to make the playoffs. From there, may the best team win. And the Phillies were the best National League team these playoffs. You may not like it but that's how it is.
@@philly_sports1558 the playoffs haven't meant much to me since 93. It had some integrity until 2011. Then with the second wild card it became a farce. The third wild card is just laughable. I prefer a real pennant race that is two months of close competition over a do over for teams who had a mediocre season. A championship should be competed for by teams that proved to be the best over the regular season. The Phillies failed badly and a big reason for that was their 12-26 record against the two teams in the division that smoked them.
This playoffs was really fun to watch, a lot of the games were entertaining
loved this squad all year everyone doubted us✅well be back
That Astros No Hitter was the same feeling I had in game 6 of the 1993 World Series. OUCH thanks Universe lol
Schwarber put the team on his back as soon as Harper went down. That can’t be ignored.
