    honestly we need more tutorials like this. i have been sewing for 20 years and the easiest way to get a pattern to use to make *any* clothing is to use one you already have. u don't have to dissemble it if its a t-shirt, just trace it onto paper trying to make sure u get the entire piece, not stretched or skewed, for each piece.

    This is really nice!! I never thought of making one. Is scary cus you don't want to make mistakes. Waste fabric and time and all of the above. But im gonna try soon i can. Thanks for the simplicity of this video.

    • @CraftsWithEllen
      @CraftsWithEllen  Před 7 lety +1

      I know that feeling of not wanting to make any mistakes.. It helps that sewing is pretty forgiving. If you mess up the stitching you can just take it out and try again ;) In terms of wasting fabric, you can try getting some cheap bedsheets/curtains/etc. from a second hand store and use that. Then you don't have to worry about ruining expensive fabric! And it will still look good in the end. Also, I find that as long as I learned something, the time I spent on a 'failed' project is never really wasted :) I hope you give it a try!

    You can make the brim insert by painting glue (or cornstarch/wheatstarch/rice starch paste) onto a thick piece of fabric, or a few layers of thin material. Other than that, good video.

      You know those cutting boards made of really thin, transparent plastic? I cut those up and form it with a little heat from a hair dryer.

    • @rodschmidt3439
      @rodschmidt3439 Před 6 lety

      Hi Ellen, I made my own brim insert from extra-ultra-heavy-duty interfacing (which I obtained from the Mill End fabric store south of Portland, Oregon; one of the clerks there makes hats, and he steered me to the correct material). It takes two layers of this interfacing to make a brim. I sewed the two layers together, along several parallel lines, forcing it into a curve as I did so, and the brim retained the curve!!! (The lines run back-to-front on the finished brim.) I am completely satisfied with the resulting brim.

    • @rodschmidt3439
      @rodschmidt3439 Před 6 lety

      Oh, I once made a flat hat brim out of corrugated plastic, the type that is used for temporary outdoor signs. It has one flat layer of plastic on each side and a corrugated layer down the middle.

      I appreciate you asking about me making a cap for you, but I don't do any commission work. I have a full time job and making CZcams videos is my hobby, so I don't have time to make things for selling. Maybe you can find someone else who can, on Etsy for example.

    this reminds me of a movie i watched of some high school fresh girl who wanted to be popular but didnt have money for clothes, so wearing the rotten stuff her grandmother gave made her a laughing stock, but the minute she saw a sewing machine, she had no idea the tailoring talent she had and started making stuff and took the spotlight off the most popular girl in school who had all the boys, that really made the most popular girl really mad when her boyfriend started dumping her for the fresh girl.
