Jim most likely would have published a few more poetry books and possibly a novel, but would have moved into film by the mid-70's. Jim would have become another Tarantino IMO.

      The types of people who are against body positivity (or in other words not being a fucking asshole to people who are fat) wouldn’t think to question the “health” of the average thin person. I call bullshit on this phony concern with health when skinny people can just as easily be eating a bunch of fucking garbage but just be blessed with the metabolism for it not to manifest in excess fat. It’s a deep seeded phobia and distain for fatness perpetuated by a culture obsessed with thinness that’s really talking here. People fronting like it’s not the case because they don’t think critically, interrogate their beliefs, and because fatness isn’t in line with their idea of beauty.

    • @JessicaLouise0601
      @JessicaLouise0601 Před 6 lety +134

      Exactly. No body ever lost weight because an asshole called them 'fat'. The only way someone gets healthier is because they feel good and want to do it. Not because someone bullied them into it, which actually makes people more depressed and more likely to put on weight.

      @@lindajohnson4204 sorry but this was when journalist actually did their job well and professionally. You interjected claims of what you believe is happening today -- or the past few years considering you commented two years ago. Most journalist are professional and deliver their stories with honesty and conviction; the problem today is that a certain majority of people has let a certain known liar and emotionally handicapped narcissist who refuses to admit its possible for him to lose place doubt into their heads.

    • @lindajohnson4204
      @lindajohnson4204 Před rokem

      @@clarenceworley3714 There are such people on both left and right. If you live with a massive scam, you see what it is like underneath. My neighbor is out singing in the hall. No reason for him to have believed in that narcissist, but I think, for awhile, he thought his bread was buttered on that side, or else he was employed to influence other people that way. Maybe you'll be remembered when he comes into office, etc. So there were lots of black people around here, talking up Trump. He called himself "black Bond", btw. It didn't necessarily last very long, but there was this hope in many people that Trump might represent freedom's last hope. I hesitate to fill out the cliche with "best", but it you think it's the only hope, I guess it's the best in your mind. But I heard too many things. I overheard Trump on TV, saying "separation of powers is a bad system...it's bad for the people". Who would think a man who said that could be elected president? But it's disturbing to me that no one seems to have made an issue of that particular statement. I've never heard anyone else say that they heard it, but I did, and don't really watch that much TV. For her part, Hillary addressed Christians with "you people have to stop believing what you believe!", helping to frighten many people into the Trump camp. To me, the election was like frightening and stampeding cattle into a box canyon. While the MSM did the usual "be good liberals, guys, and vote against the bad people", why not make an issue out of the particulars, and if needs be, explain to the people what separation of powers means, and why it is so important? Ah, I forgot: we're being advised to quit voting for issues, and just vote our "affinity groups". What could go wrong with that? And with Hillary showing no support for First Amendment rights (just about all the wonderful candidates scoffed at the first amendment when the rights of "you people" were at stake.) And see, it is a massive error to believe that because one side is bad, the other is good. But both sides were too bad to trust, or waste a vote on. So the "vote of no confidence" was my most likely way to make a statement, and I wasn't alone. There were many other reasons to be wary, but the election seemed to be for sleepwalkers who had ceased to think critically about an election. Trump acted just like he'd been studying films of Mussolini! "Trusted journalists" suggested that Bonhoeffer would be mad at you if you didn't vote for Trump. Some of us got text msgs with threats to kill us, if we didn't vote for Trump, even if we didn't vote for anyone! Not very confidence building in your candidate, but a message of terror.
      I know there is much to commend in many journalists, but that doesn't necessarily extend to them all. Lots of times, when they've had responsibilities, they have thought of their careers first.
      The exceptions are notable. One I've been thinking about for the last few years was when a local newspaper man took a terrible risk, because he took being a newspaperman that seriously. He was a figure on the national scene; he was a marshal on the Freedom Riders buses, etc..This particular story, I do not care to risk my life to share, but in the article that was published, he went against suppressing a story that had been retrieved from every news room, including the pictures.So the awful, mysterious-to-me story (without pictures) was something I have pondered over the years; I was about 13 or so when it happened. He even seemed to likely be in sympathy with the aims of the group who seemed to be responsible for killing the story,, yet being a journalist was that important. I attribute it to the man's desire and commitment to be an honest newspaperman, not suppressing relevant news from the people. The suppression took a very small, trivial story, and turned it into a "big" one, although one that didn't go very far. Why? I have always respected that.

    • @lindajohnson4204
      @lindajohnson4204 Před rokem

      @@clarenceworley3714 The press of the time of Jim's trial were letting him "twist slowly, slowly in the wind", as they said a few years later about another thing. Lots of those hippie/rock journalists treated him like he was a horrible pariah, like they couldn't bear to speak to him, when they could have known he was a relatively decent young man, and known it with very little effort. Instead, he was decided guilty on accusation. Who would think "cool, rock journalists", the ones who would interview him, would care so little about an obvious injustice? No wonder Jim condemned hippies as useless, partying people, who cared nothing about the serious causes they pretended to care about. There were still a few who were willing to listen, and even with those who put him down, there were some interesting interviews.

      Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
      And sorry I could not travel both
      And be one traveler, long I stood
      And looked down one as far as I could
      To where it bent in the undergrowth;
      Then took the other, as just as fair,
      And having perhaps the better claim,
      Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
      Though as for that the passing there
      Had worn them really about the same,
      And both that morning equally lay
      In leaves no step had trodden black.
      Oh, I kept the first for another day!
      Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
      I doubted if I should ever come back.
      I shall be telling this with a sigh
      Somewhere ages and ages hence:
      Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
      I took the one less traveled by,
      And that has made all the difference.

    This is body positivity. It isn't a new thing concocted by liberals. Its the idea of being comfortable and confident in your body. It isn't encouraging people to be unhealthy. It isn't glorifying bad behavior. It's about being comfortable with who you are and Morrison knew that. It's such a modern idea and goes against the conformity of being a certain standard of person. Fuck that. Be who you want to be. You're not lesser than if you're comfortable being chubby. No one is saying, "hey be 700 pounds. That's just an exaggeration made by people who don't have an argument against body positivity."
    Fat is beautiful. Damn straight.

      he said he was 185 pounds at 180cm and that was above average at the time. We have to remember he grew up in a soldier generation. He would have been much fatter than anyone else but not completely unhealthy. The average now is 200 pounds, so there has been a rise in obesity and those who are above average are certainly at risk of severe health problems.

    Morrison was never even remotely fat. It's only in comparison to his weight in '66/67 when he was emaciated

    • @Mcfirefly2
      @Mcfirefly2 Před 5 lety +20

      He got pretty fat during that time in school; other pictures taken when he was in school show him very thin. I suspect that depression played a part in putting some pounds on then.

    • @metalmulisha0143
      @metalmulisha0143 Před 5 lety +6

      Mcfirefly2 how do you know he suffered with depression or was depressed? I'd agree but I'm just wondering. Having piled on a tonne of weight being depressed I also agree about that, but it's still just as easy to lose the weight while depressed as I found out the last 6 months

    • @Mcfirefly2
      @Mcfirefly2 Před 5 lety +15

      @@metalmulisha0143 Some people lose weight with depression. I think he was depressed because he had reason to be. In the early-mid sixties, it was probably mostly about Vietnam, and as it turned out, he had valid reason to be concerned about that. Even the highschool he went to was the kind of school that was full of military scuttlebutt. So in early college, he's able to buy a beer and drink to feel a little better, and he's kind of heavy in his pictures from Tallahassee. In a couple of pictures from UCLA, he's really heavy, and the starchy school food probably played a role in that, but pretty soon, he's at his normal weight, and at the same time, not looking so depressed. During that period when he was sleeping on the Venice rooftop and on the beach, he was really poor, and he gets really thin. The psychedelics have a reputation for lifting depression, but with the counter effect of subjecting people to bad trips. I think he was probably susceptible to bad trips. In fact, "Ship of Fools" has it's history lesson, "along came Mr. Good Trips, looking for a new ship", also suggesting whatever went wrong in his relationship with his dad. But he definitely puts Mr. Good Trips in the Ship of Fools. While he is thought of as leader of psychedelia, he said he only used LSD briefly. I doubt that he profoundly respected Leary, etc, for calling the young to psychedelics, without much care for the ones who would be hurt by them.
      In the late 60s, he was going through government harassment, the debacle of Miami, and he has fallen out of favor with almost everyone, quite unfairly. Reporters who should know better, talk to him like he's a joke. But the harassment and pursuit through the Miami trial must have been really hard to endure, along with having the tide turn against you like that. So when he began to put on weight, it is not just that he didn't care and let himself go. For one thing, he's self medicating with alcohol, and probably with food, since he's probably trying to suppress extreme anxiety, too. He's not getting as much exercise as he would have. And he's 5'7", not 6', and has that lean, very "wispy" build, and a few pounds--a six pack of beer--looks like a lot. But he looks like his mood is improving in spring of 1971, and in those pictures in Paris, he looks pretty healthy.
      I also think he was depressed a lot because it is in his music. "I Can't See Your Face in My Mind": this feels very much like it comes from depression. It sounds like from one depressed person to another. The beautiful love song, "Yes, the River Knows" is like its scale is all about depression, for lack of a better way to say it. One if my favorite pictures of him in his early UCLA years is on that fishing boat: short hair, slightly heavier than usual, and he does look depressed, but he looks like someone I'd talk to.

      This was also in the late 1960's when obesity wasn't the epidemic that it is today. So peoples perception of fat was completely different than what it is today. What was considered fat back then would be considered average today. Fat today is morbid obesity.

      People hate it and get mad at you when you say it, but: 5'7". Ray was 6'. Compare: he was how much taller than Jim? About 5", right? Look at _Waiting for the Sun_ , for instance. And Robbie and John seem just slightly shorter than Jim. Jim was moderate in height, neither tall nor short, and of course his proportions were great, which is why he is believable as 6'. Everything you read that had band members' heights and eye colors, etc, said 5'7" back in the 60s. And 185 lbs at 5'7", for a brief while in college, is "like a tank," for a change. It's no longer "wispy"!
      I bet there is a picture somewhere of Jim standing next to something that would prove his height, but everything I can think of has probably changed.
