  • I visited the Balanta people of Guinea-Bissau whom I directly descend from. During my visit, I visited the sacred elders who did conducted a naming ceremony for me to reclaim my Balanta identity.

As a half Igbo person my family directly from Nigeria. I am extremely proud of you for wanting to identify with African people. This is beautiful reconnecting with the culture and learning the knowledge that was removed from your family ❤️💜
My dad says people of the African diaspora's home and birthright is Africa.

    • @rasaroots6309
      @rasaroots6309  Před 5 lety +2

Wow! It means a lot to me, to get that from a continental African. This is why I do this, so that I can show my fellow diasporans that NOW is the time to reconnect with our birthright, as your father rightly worded it. Thank you sister. ❤🖤💚

@@faithfirstfitness Wow, your dad is a conscious man...it's funny you say that because when I went to Sierra Leone and Guinea-Bissau, they said I resemble a Nigerian because of my height lol. There's a lot of Igbo influence in the west, especially in Jamaica. Do you know about the Igbo Landing?

    • @faithfirstfitness

      Arasa Malik
      Yes my dad is woke.
      I didn't understand because I was an
8y/o Igbo girl who always knew where I come from and who we are on the continent not what we were succumb to after being dragged hundreds of k's/miles across the 🌊.
People were actually taken into human trafficking as well from our tribe and village (the slavery continuing on the down low for a while only stopping a couple decades ago! At least as far as I know. My dad relived a glimpse experience of what the process of slavery would have cost us, by hearing about people having been abducted). People were removed historically from my village in particular, and apparently we have relatives in Jamaica, London and possibly even the states that we don't know. Because of the history of our people being removed from our land, culture and language. 🥺🥺🥺
I Hope they find us someday or I hope to find them.
Yes I heard of it but I researched more. (Remember I grew up in Australia and the American history we did was from a white perspective and about the civil rights movement)
The Igbo landing story has breaks my heart 💓 😭🥺🥺
I have a deep deep love for my people, as I always have, as I am sure you also do. My mama will be furious when I tell her because she also loves my Igbo people (I mean she was married to one, and our family my mamá, papa and brother lived in Igboland for 3 months before returning for medical reasons.)
Being the firstborn girl in our culture is very significant, and my siblings who I adore 5 are 100% Igbo and my 2 full brothers are Half like me (Nigerian/ Chilean. Our Chilean is of French, Italian and Spanish descent).
These are my family my people they treated like this. I am Christian as is my family. So nor do I or my family follow our cultural religion, but I am going to share this with my dad. How they treated our brothers, sisters, our aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins in America. How dare they do this to not only us, but your peoples and everyone else captured during this disgusting process!!!
Thank the good Lord we are all strong peoples with thick skin, hearts of gold and a spirit of strength to push through.

My history teacher was a white woman clearly of European descent and I was the only person of African descent in my Modern History class.
I was about 15/16 snd we were doing America History (the Civil Rights Movement) and she made us watch Mississippi burning... I cried and cried and cried. I was almost bawling in class. I nearly asked to leave. Everyone, else was shocked of course, but no one else felt it like I did.
You know what stupidity this woman spoke out of her mouth, in a sorry attempt to comfort me, watching my own being treated and tormented like that?
But Kelechi I don't understand your not American.
I said Miss Smith your a history teacher. Specifically a modern history teacher, and you don't know they are not just "Black". They are African people in America.
They can call themselves whatever they want but they are African.
They are of African descent and so am I. You're European. People who look like you (and people who look like my mother's ancestors) took the people who look like me and my family, so my people to the Carribean and the America's. Only to enslave, torment and abuse my brothers and sisters. I said, what if I said I was going to torment and shoot dead every person of European descent with blonde hair and blue eyes like you have 👱🏻‍♀️ are you telling me you honestly wouldn't be angry at me? You wouldn't have an emotional reaction? You wouldn't feel that was unjust?
I said how dare you speak to me like that and say what you said. I AM THE ONLY AFRICAN IN THIS CLASS... CLEARLY!
I didn't want an apology but even some lower than above basic understanding, would be great by a HISTORY TEACHER.
She said would you like to leave... yea I kinda just marched out I remember I was furious. I told my HS friend who is from Zimbabwe, and she said sis you did the right thing. She said girl I woulda stood with you and backed you up if I was in your class, she said the ignorance is real.
This was my "history teacher" who got a 97/98 ATAR (Year 12 Finals we call them HSC test score). THIS WOMAN SOME HOW GOT A..... NVM

Wow 😍 I’m also from the Balanta tribe from my mother’s side while my father is from the MANJAK tribe (both from Guinea Bissau 🇬🇼). I come from the “Cobana family” and I’m the only sibling in my family that has this surname “Cobana” the rest of my brothers and sisters got MANJAK/Portuguese surname. When I was in my teenage age i used to be bullied in school because of my surname “Cobana” and I asked my mother Why am I the only person in our family that has this surname?! And she told me it was for 2 reasons: #1) because when my mom was expecting me she was very sick but I was a fighter and I gave her so much strength while I was in her womb. #2) because my face resembles my balanta grandfather from birth until now. and “Cobana” means a warrior/those who resist. From that day on I walked with pride, I love my Balanta family name. Proud COBANA ❤✊🏾🙌🏾😊
