I need to come up from Vancouver and do some of your push hand events. Its one of the things I have so little practice with.

This looks really cool, to understand when to push and pull and where to put weight, still competitive but not destructive like boxing and mma

I was so frustrated with the TaiChi class I took as a teen. Over a year spent there and we almost never did any Push Hands. This is awesome. There's definitely a legitimate application to this in real confrontations as well: many real encounters can start at this range and with this kind of interaction. I think a lot of Chinese Martial Arts still have a long way to go in terms of application, but Push Hands stands out since it's non-scripted, which in my mind gives it an inherent value.

Hi can I ask do you do any weight training to make yourself stronger for push hands, amd do you recommend such exercises with training

Strength cannot be divorced from health, and the WHO recommends every adult participate in strength-building exercises. So we try to incorporate some of that into our weekly classes.
With that said... I believe that competition is most interesting, when the outcome is decided by fundamental skills.

I'm sorry to say. It appears the essence of the art has been lost. I have only ever seen one person who could really do it and I've only ever met one person (different person) who could really explain it (in English). After forty years I can't do it either. So while I can now identify the wrong thing I can't see what to replace the wrong thing with. So all I can do is not practice the wrong thing.

Would you like to hear it?
Legend has it that the real Kongzi was an archer. One thing all real archers have in common, they miss the bullseye more often than they hit. That is the price of mastery.
Here is the story of fifty-cent Confucius. Like the real one, he went around giving unsolicited advice to kings. However, unlike the real one... fifty-cent Confucius would never dare to take a shot at the target himself. All he could ever bring himself to do, was to not practice the wrong thing.
You never heard this story. That's because nobody cares about a fifty-cent Confucius.
