Woodturning - Aspen Log to Hollowform Bowl

  • Thought this was going to be a quick turn. Had an Aspen log segment, which turns super-easy, but the grain was so open (almost wonder if it was rotting) that it took FOREVER to get it sanded down to a smooth finish. Still, I like the final piece. There’s something very pleasing about the almost-white color of Aspen wood which allows the subtle blue figuring to show through.
For those of you who are wondering, I used Ack’s Abrasive Sanding Paste and Ack’s Polish/Restoring Paste.
Off camera I finalized the piece with some OB shine juice (equal parts shellac, denatured alcohol and boiled linseed oil).

Aspen is often surprisingly cool inside, good job, nice to see someone turning something a little different. And if it works for you, Aspen sure is easy to find.

I don't think I've ever seen Aspen turned but know I want to see more of it. This bowl is so cool. 💜

I showed up here,( half in the bag ) bouncing around the you tube "suggestions"...
Your video kept my fleeting, chemically enhanced attention fixed. I commend thee, subscribed and bell on!

The bulk of wood I turn is poplar, looks identical including the bark and coloration. It is an attractive wood.when it’s done. You did a nice job finishing, to that fine a level. It takes a significant effort to get it that smooth. Have yet to find a tool to get there. I appreciate your selection and use. Answered a couple of questions that have floating around in my mind. Thank you.

Beautiful ending, and I I didn't think about using Aspen to turn, I think it's too soft. But from your video, it's ok. Thank you for your sharing,🙂🙂

Nice work! I"m wondering why it was rotated 90 degrees for turning. Thanks!

What do you mean by open grained? Turned out to be very nice bowl.

That's a great looking bowl. What is the guide called that you used to draw the circle for bandaw cutting? I couldn't find one on Amazon so I obviously was not calling it by the right name.

Dave Zarro thanks. Just search for woodworking compass protractor. That one can either hold a pencil or it has a sharp enough end that it actually scores the wood without a pencil.

I really like this bowl. Was it hard to find that piece of wood?

Chris Eckard No, we actually salvaged an aspen log from some neighbors who were having it removed after it died. I got a couple of decent sized pieces of aspen from that log.

Great bowl. I just got some aspen and am drying. Can’t wait to see what it is like. How dry was your blank?

    What makes that a “hollowform “ bowl? That’s just a bowl! 🙄👎🏻

    • @CASWoodcraft
      @CASWoodcraft  Před 3 lety +1

You might be right. “Hollowform”, to me, describes a vessel where the interior shape mimics the exterior one. A standard bowl might have exterior ridges or divots that are not reproduced on the inside whereas a “hollowform” one follows the exterior shape fairly exactly. In this case, the interior of the bowl follows the exterior shape, hence I’m calling it a hollowform.

Hollowform means the hole on top is smaller than the outside diameter. Still, it's a very pretty bowl! Nice turn...
