Kobe Bryant greatest games: NBA record 12 threes vs Sonics (2003)

  • 45pts vs the Sonics including 12 threes: "Threemendous".
The three point shot was not Kobe's best weapon entering the 2003 season.
When he gained some weight in the offseason, P.Jackson told the journalists he would be better behind the three point line.
But Kobe struggled in the 1st months of the season, especially when he was 0/8, twice.
And then, here came the Sonics in town. Kobe had a quiet opening quarter, scoring 4pts. But when he made 6 straight threes in the last 6 minutes of the half, we knew something was different. Especially when he connected on 6 more after that.
Kobe made 2 NBA records that night(9 straight threes and 12 overall). From this game to, Kobe started hitting threes in a Kobe way fashion - fadeways threes, 4 feet behind the arc - and it seems that he'll never stop

remember the story of robert horry about kobe in his rookie season. that dude couldnt hit the 3 ball to save his life and everyday he would join the vets in a 3 point contest right from training camp. and everyday he would lose badly. and one day he came up to robert horry and the other vets and asked to play again: this time he managed to win the contest. in the middle of the season no less. thats the difference between kobe and others.

This dude had 12 three's in one game in 2003. Beast mode status. This should've been another 50 point game for his career. Only candidate I see possibly surpassing that mark is Steph Curry. Kobe is the most offensively skilled player in NBA history. No one can do it better.

Indeed Donyell Marshall shared that record (12/19 from 3pt range vs Phila in march 2005.
Kobe's game was far more impressive: he made 9 straight threes (NBA record), 11 of 13 at one moment!
Marshall scored 38pts (to Kobe's 45) and needed one more shot (19 to Kobe's 18).

My 2 cents here.. Thanks to Jordan himself the game has grown at an exponential rate. The number of people globally and nationally has skyrocketed and we are seeing the effects in the high level of parity in the NBA. Had someone with Kobe's talent gone up against the same defenders as in MJ's era I believe he would have put up identical numbers. Same as if MJ were to play in todays NBA with numbers comparable to Kobe's. Kobe/MJ/Shaq my 3 fav players and watched each religiously-3 of the best

Driving to the rim with everything, have you even seen Jordan play? His crossover is unrivaled. Watch his 1997 playoff highlights (the assassin)
Kobe takes 50 shots a game, that why it might APPEAR he is a good 3 point shooter but he isn't consistent AT ALL. hes never had over a .380 3 pt percentage. Jordan peaked at .500. Jordan also has a higher FG percentage and probably a better or equal mid range game. He wins in all categories.

Kobe is certainly the most skilled offensive player, arguably the most complete as well. His biggest downside is taking bad shots. Not that this changes anything on the whole Kobe vs MJ thing, because MJ shoots at a higher percentage than Kobe and it's the results produced on the court that matters.
in summary: MJ is the best at creating an easy shot while Kobe is the best at taking very tough shots.
