@Sebastian Soriano "Kobe has to set up the offense, read the defense, make others happy and he's doing a great job of it. Kobe has become the floor leader on a basketball team that was looking for that player who can not only be a scorer, but also be a playmaker who can consistently make big plays at critical times. It was very important for Kobe to step into that role he was envisioned at." - Phil Jackson(2001)

Shaq missing 15 games isn't enough to give Kobe the MVP, neither of them deserved a MVP when they played together. Shaq missed 15 games, but he was the best player on that Lakers team overall for the 67 games that he did play. Duncan had the better individual year which lead to more team success. Duncan proved in the playoffs that he was deserving of the MVP award that he won in the regular season.

To me he’s the most skilled hooper to ever play. I’m not gonna say not even close but you can tell he’s put more time in than anyone else. His game was built off his pull-up jumper. He never had MJ’s or Lebron level of athleticism. Certainly athletic but he could get away with there dribble drive style of play. It explains why his shooting percentage was never at their level. But the skill set is elite, the way he got to his pull-up was so imaginative and he didn’t give a damn. He’d pull it wherever whenever. Special basketball player, wish we got to see more of the post career Kobe. We miss you Bean

      @olaogung09
"To me he’s the most skilled hooper to ever play."
Why do people like yourself think that just because MJ was the superior athlete, that it automatically made him "less skilled" than kobe?
That is a rather asinine premise...SMH
Especially considering the fact that unlike kobe (RIP), MJ's supreme level of skill was developed and REFINED, by actually having gone to (and played in) one of the most historic basketball programs in history, which was taught by one of the GREATEST basketball minds ever.
That was invaluable to the development of his skills, which is why he was able to dominate as a rookie!
But when looking at Kobe, there are SEVERAL THINGS that SERIOUSLY LIMITED his skill level (when compared to MJ's), due to NOT having that kinda' training.
For starters, he ALWAYS STRUGGLED against tough/physical defenses that doubled/triple teamed him. This is due to NEVER having LEARNED HOW to limit the number of iso's that he ROUTINELY engaged in, which is something that BOTH Phil and Tex Winter CONSTANTLY criticized him for, over the course of his career.
It's also why he tended to over rely on 3pt shooting and NEEDED IT so much more than MJ, just to be able to score 30 pts a game.
See, if he’d gone to college and LEARNED how to effectively move without the ball, which utilizes “minimal” dribbling, it would've made it much more difficult for aggressive defenses to guard him.
Knowing how to do ALL of these things (on top of having superior athleticism), is not only what made MJ the MORE skilled of the two, but the MORE difficult to defend as well.

Again: he CONSISTENTLY STRUGGLED against the tough/physical defenses that double/triple teamed him and that is a FACT!
This is the same guy who TWICE set the All Time record for MOST MISSED shots in a Finals, in 2 SEPARATE Finals, which happened to be against 1 of the best defenses of his era.
Not a coincidence, given the facts of the matter.
Because the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of his BEST offensive games, ALL CAME against the WORST defenses.
      Not the best ones.
Case in point: out of his 26 career 50+ pt games, 15 of 'em were against sub .500 teams (7 with less than 30 wins), and 20 of 'em came AFTER the defensive rules changed.
Only 6 of 'em were against Top 10 defenses and his combined FG% in these 6 games is only 46%. And in half of 'em he didn't even hit 50% of his shots, with the WORST one being 17-41 shooting (41%).
11 of 'em were against defenses ranked 20th or lower, and 7 were vs defenses ranked 25th or lower.
In fact he NEVER scored 50+ pts vs the #1 (or #2) ranked defense AT NO POINT during his entire career, and only scored 50+ pts vs a Top 5 defense ONCE!
His career high vs Top 10 defenses is 53 pts (he did it 2x).
And in those 2 games he needed O.T. and double O.T. respectively, just to get those 53 pts.
Now go look at MJ's best scoring games and who they were against.
      It's the exact opposite...

Probably my favorite Kobe season. Had the 9 straight games of 40+ points, 13 straight of 35+, averaged 30 ppg, 7 rebs, 6 ast, 2 stls and almost shot 40 percent from three point range. Kept the Lakers afloat with Shaq out and was at his most athletic. People forget he had a knee injury he was battling for most of 2003 but he still played all 82 games and averaged 41 minutes a game... just crazy! Kobe's greatest prime season. Yes better than '06-'09. Let me explain. 2003 Kobe was the closest we'll ever get to a prime ('91-93) Michael Jordan. This was before his knee surgery after the season that I think really hampered his athleticism. 2003 was the only season we saw the skill & jumpshot of the older Kobe, combined with the flash & athleticism of young Kobe.
We saw bursts of his old athleticism during '06-09, but he could never sustain it like he did before. It's no coincidence he averaged a career high in steals, and 3-pt % that season, both of which he never came close to matching again. He moved differently, and he drove the ball with intensity.
It's a shame 2003 was the only season the entire package was there. He suffered numerous injuries the next 2 seasons, & by the time '06 rolled around, he'd already transitioned into a more typical mid-range scorer with the mid-range.

Your absolutely right this was best version of Kobe but the reason those injures started was because those early runs to the championship. Jordan 1984-87 was same age as Kobe 2000-03 but Jordan wasn’t playing a full playoff. He was out in first round every year. Jordan had a full offseason to develop while Kobe was getting titles but it would cost him later on.

I literally could watch him for HOURS. sometimes i find myself watching repatative footage cause i feel like ive watched literally everything there is to see about kobes nba career. The finest details he perfects so well almost to perfection which in turn makes him so lethal to guard. Its fun and i feel unpatienced sometimes with watching todays game cause i know there will never be a player like him as how jordan was in the late 80s to 90s. The only player that satisfies me in terms of using intriquite details and fundamentals and makes it look astonishing is now kyrie irving but even then the mamba is just a different breed and prob the only one like that ever. I hope there will be another Jordan/kobe player again but we will see. And btw Lebron is on a different category in my book. Hes fascinating and entertaining but in a totally different way, so i put him in a totally different universe if u wanna put in that way. But kobe to me is far more superior offensively than both Jordan and Lebron. personally I think season 2001-2002 Kobe became the best all-around player in the league and then by 2003 it wasn't even close. Though Shaq was still the most dominant in the league by far, Kobe had an overall complete game. He was a threat ANYWHERE on the court whereas Shaq was an under the post threat. Physical dominance doesn't equal best player necessarily otherwise Dwight Howard would be the best player from 2009-2011 and we know that's not true even tho he was easily the most freakishly physically dominant version of himself then. I'd say from 1999-2001 Shaq was the best player in the game as well as dominant I gotta also say Iverson was also the best with Kobe running up behind both closely. Honestly, you couldn't go wrong with any. but by 2001-2002 season, it was def Kobe. No one in the league was good at closing, off the dribble, technique, skillful, and creative than Kobe then. Shaq still had the power and dominance game. And Iverson was still there but damn if only he was just a bit taller.

I was relatively a new Kobe fan. I started to really invest time in watching Kobe back when 2006 season started, that's the year he averaged 35 ppg (scoring 81 in 1/22/2006). Prior to 2006, I was more of a Vince Carter fan. So following Kobe, I've always had a hard time choosing which is his best year among these season choices:
    2006 (35 ppg),
2007 (scored 50+ points in 4 straight games),
    2008 (MVP season),
    2009 (Championship Kobe),
2010 (6 game clinching shots Kobe),
    2012 (veteran Kobe)
    2013 (vino Kobe)
However, after watching this 2003 Kobe Highlight, it added to my dilemma of which season is really his best. 2003 Kobe is something else, watching him in this highlight feels like he is already in another dimension among the other players.
    2003 (55 pts against MJ, 9 consecutive games of 40+ points, 3 point record of 12 3fgm)
Kobe is really the best. I've also been told of how good he was in 2004 (Lakers of Shaq, Malone, Payton) they said this was the year Black Mamba was born.
Not including yet the 2001 Kobe and 2005 Kobe (first year without Shaq).

What’s his argument? Because commentators on mass were not calling him such, most were maintaining that he wasn’t even the best player on his own fucking team.
5-11 in 03 without games Shaq played, and 55-47 overall for their 8 years together when Shaq sat. You know what Shaq’s record was without Kobe? 36-8.
Duncan this same season that apparently Kobe was the best proceeding to beat Kobe and Shaq in the playoffs without even an All-Star teammate, whilst leading SA in every statistic, averaging 11 more PPG than his next best teammate and being a God level defender. To this day it’s the most VORP/Win Shares/PER of any playoff run ever.
SA succeeded the year after Duncan because of a success hangover, like Chicago did in 94. And because Duncan recruited Pau Gasol and LMA and took paycuts, whilst Kobe when he was washed outcasted teammates and demanded to make 30 million a year.
How did it end up tho? Because SA have done jack shit without Duncan whilst LA won a title like 4 years after Kobe retired 😂😂😂
For 3 of Kobes 4 playoff wins v SA he had peak Shaq, what did Duncan have? A 38 year old Robinson? Parker before he could buy a beer? That same logic has Nash and Dirk over Kobe
Let’s just say Parker and Kawhi were better than Duncan (Parker certainly wasn’t for the playoff run), that still means Duncan was the best player on 3 title teams, which is more than Kobe….
