To be fair, outside of the Lakers, who just signed Shaq, not that many organizations we’re going to handle drafting a 17 year that well.

Kobe lasted until pick number 13 for a reason. Everyone seem to want to revise history but when teams passed up Bryant hardly anyone was questioning it. In fact the Charlotte Hornets actually drafted Kobe and traded him to the Lakers for Vlade Divac. A number of people thought he had potential but he was looked at as a long term project. Also back then Players jumping from high school to the pros was extremely rare and most of the players who made the jump were 7 foot centers/forwards that NFL team were comfortable taking a chance on since finding an athletic 7 footer was and still is rare. Kobe was a 6'6 gaurd. The NBA hadn't seen a gaurd successfully jump from HS to the NBA and become a superstar at that point in time.

Obviously a big mistake on the part of the Clippers, made even worse considering the same scenario played out a year prior. The Bullets declined to draft Keving Garnett for the exact same reason, and he would go on to have a very respectable rookie season with Minnesota.

@@brandondrew4914 If your franchise doesn't have enough money, you have to be super competent in the front office like the Moneyball movie with the "Oakland A's". A small market team like Milwaukee Bucks won the chip last year cause they made good moves. San Antonio Spurs is a small market team that was very prominent during the Tim Duncan era cause of a great front office staff that knew how to draft and acquire great players and they had a great coach. It's not impossible for smaller market teams to win with smaller pockets. They just have to be that much smarter as an organization.

Lorenzen Wright. To be fair to Clippers, he was more efficient in his rookie year. But Kobe had an exceptional growth mindset and he became the legend we all know.
