Some lucky ones (read his biography) were able to follow him for hours in after hours bars, as he played more and more, on and on, with never relenting joy, variation,, wonder.

I remember an old Jazz master saying, when Art walked into a club you could sometimes overhear other musicians saying "He Comes God". He was THAT GOOD!

I think Art Tatum was such a brilliant artist for his era and the following years that each comparison with other great jazz pianists simply doesn't fit...
Moreover, I think that he did not play bebop because his artistry could not be constrained in that music, also if bebop was undoubtedly the real musical avant-gard of that time.
He was two steps ahead even from bebop: he could play it but he simply did'n t want to do it... What a genius, what a musical talent, what a fantastic jazz player...

He claimed to make mistakes all the time. It's just that he could instantly make sense of the wrong note by what he played after it. I think having the clarity of the mind and the inventiveness to do that is the real trick of the trade.

Wow that's probably the greatest advice I've ever received and been ready to receive it. Thank you!
