First 2 mins are like recitative not sticking to strict time, just playing with ideas around this well known melody. He keeps the audience waiting to build tension and then finally lets it swing at 1:49. The joy of Art's playing is that however far the improvisations go he still keeps coming back with fragments of the melody so you don't even need to be a muso to follow what's going on. As often with Art the recording quality is not ideal but the content is there in spades!

I love these recordings where Art really stretches out and improvises freely around the melody. I find some of his recordings too rote.

An impossible goal and not worthwhile. The goal is to sound like yourself. That's why Art is timeless, he still sounds like himself.

@bluesinorbit yess!! i love you guys appreciate that kind of details as a pianist i always try to get that deep in the key sound but it is impossible to do it like they did!! sooo epic

Seriously, a few pianists of the time had clarity of tone and touch on the piano like Tatum. Ellington is among the few. Gunther Schuller calls it "deep in the key" sound.

@@chrisSkordPiano I agree. Those who can't appreciate Tatum are obviously unfamiliar with the entire vocabulary of jazz (and blues) which he employs. Subtleties may be lost on them when they feel overwhelmed by his technique, or bewildered by his out-of-tempo ruminations. When Tatum emerged, in the early 1930's, all who had come before, and most who came after, acknowledged his role as a "game-changer" for everyone, not just pianists. Some who heard him while on the road in Toledo, Ohio before his first recordings, such as Coleman Hawkins in the late 1920's, and Count Basie in the very early 30's, attested to his influence even then. This includes Duke Ellington also. One may not "like" his "style" but still must recognize his historical role in the development of jazz improvisation and harmony. Charlie Parker took a job as a dishwasher in NYC in 1939 just to hear Art play every night!
