DRIVER SHAFT FLEX TEST | Does Driver Shaft Flex Matter?

  • Driver Shaft Flex is one of the most important components in any golf driver fitting. While the fitters at 2nd Swing Golf will prioritize the clubhead in a club fitting, the next component is identifying the right shaft. This means that in a golf driver fitting, making sure you play the right driver shaft flex is essential to hitting good tee shots.
    In this video, 2nd Swing's Drew Mahowald and Kevin Kraft conduct a driver shaft flex test using the same clubhead and same shaft model, but in different shaft flexes.

    This should have been a "Blind Test". Cover the Flex designation and then hand the Club to him.
    His knowing the Flex will setup "expectations" and Different swings.

    I never realized how fast I swing the driver and just always used a stiff flex shaft. I kept getting low launching drives and sometimes even drove the ball directly into the ground off the tee, but actually squarely hit the ball. I couldn’t understand what was happening until I got fitted. Turns out my average club speed was 119mph and I was flexing the S shaft like a wet noodle. The club head was just lagging way behind my hands. I swapped to an X stiff shaft and it blew my mind! I’m launching every single drive and have so much more control over my shot. Do yourself a favor and find out your swing speed. It’s essential!

    I was always led to believe if the shaft is too soft you hook the ball which is certainly the case for me, I switched to an X flex shaft and have hit the longest straightest drives of my life with it and my mis is now right not a hook into the left trees 👍

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  Před 18 dny

      Nice!! Your initial point is true for some golfers, but not all. The right shaft flex is from a combination of swing speed and swing tempo. You most likely have a smoother tempo which allows a club with a softer shaft to pull the clubhead ahead of where it should be. Players with a quick transition at the top will actually see a softer shaft leave the clubhead too far back, if that makes sense

    Shaft profile is more of a factor than flex. I"ve got the Autoflex 505 and technically swing too fast for the "flex", although it squares up beautifully. Friends of mine that are in excess of 115 also hammer the ball. Look no further than Matt Blois hitting it 390. Like you stated in the beginning, results may vary. It might be a baseline to start with but it comes down to feel and timing for weight and strike location. Cheers fellas!

    Excellent video. I am playing the G430 Max with a stiff Alta cb shaft. I’ve known for some time that too soft a flex causes a wider dispersion for me. Agree with Kevin that playing a stiffer shaft tightens dispersion, but my shape becomes gentle fade, rather than slice, hook and anything in between. I also notice that launch is a bit lower and more consistent.

    I can say from my own experience I had everything in regular. I have been taking lessons and the person said to get checked by club head speed as he thought I was in the wrong shaft.
    I was I needed stiff shafts. Bought new irons and Irons are working great. I just changed the shafts and picked them up today in my driver, 5 wood, 7 wood. I have found from today that I am getting more consistent yardage I am getting around 15 yards more in distance. The biggest thing is that all my drives today were straight and in the fairway. They would usually tend to go right. Can’t explain why but I can say that the stiff flex shaft makes the club different for me and for me it works. I got the fujikura vista pro stiff 75 for driver and woods. Ping i525 irons is stiff

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  Před 3 měsíci +1

      If you are consistently hitting the ball more than about 250-260 yards, most likely, stiff is better. However, there are a lot of variables at play here that can affect your driving distance besides your swing speed and tempo. Spin, attack angle, driver loft, etc all have an impact as well. A quick, less-scientific way to answer this: if your ball flight is on the higher side and you notice your ball spinning a bit, maybe floating more than others in the air, you may benefit from a stiffer shaft. If your ball flight is on the lower side, a regular flex may help you kick it up a bit.

    I thought the softer shaft goes left (hook) and stiffer shafts go right (slice)?

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  Před 2 měsíci

      It's not that black-and-white, because it also hinges on a player's tempo, not just the swing speed. For example, a player with quick swing tempo will find that a shaft too flexible will result in the clubhead lagging behind, thus keeping the face open and missing right.

  • @mootrail9487

    I push or fade the ball to the right with a too stiff (XS+ or high CPM) shaft and hit a high loopy hook with a too soft (A or a superlight 45g-) shaft. And yes, I'm a righty. Definitely the opposite of your "gerneral rule":)

    The roll yards are so exaggerated on these CZcams channels. PGA tour average driving roll yards are around 14-18 yards after carrying 285 yards. To get 30+ yards, it has to be perfect fairway in a dry condition with slight downhill.

    • @mtmmason
      @mtmmason Před 3 měsíci

      2023 average carry was 275 with average total of 299.9 according PGA trackman data. That’s average, but I’d bet 30 yards is more common than 14 to 18. I just wouldn’t bet much until after April or May.
