Oh, I'm not saying Luke can't fly. And the force does amplify his natural abilities (remember what Obi-Wan said about Anakin, before the prequels ruined the mythos) but Wedge Antilles. That's all. Wedge. Antilles.
And I really think it would have been somewhat of a nice easter egg to have Poe Dameron (who is nowhere near the pilot Wedge Antilles is) be the offspring of Biggs Darklighter or something. If you wanted a backstory for a sequels character, that's where it should have been rooted. A real lost opportunity if you ask me.

Imagine playing chess against the world champ when you know what his next move will be for certain; sure, you can do better, but once he knows that you know, he can set traps for that. In legends, Wedge turned down several promotions. The only reason he accepted the promotion to general was because he was told his own officers were turning down their promotions because they saw it as a tradition. He was told 'Rogue squadron should be more than a collection of flight officers and lieutenants'. The response he gave after he accepted was basically 'when did you figure out that using my own people against me was the only way to get me to accept a promotion?' As General Antilles, he stayed in the cockpit for a while but eventually became captain of the super star destroyer Lusankya after it was repaired from the damage done to it during the battle for thyferra.

Saw Gerrera. I know that might be controversial given that he is on this competency list, but hear me out. Saw was charismatic, which won people to his cause, but his grasp of strategy was basically just attack the nearest Imperial target regardless of its importance or collateral damage, which ended up costing him troops and social capital. Because of this, people who might have otherwise been sympathetic to the Rebellion saw it as little more than a terrorist organization. Ackbar did not only just lead the rebel fleet. He basically built it. He essentially wrote the fleet doctrine for the rebel alliance, created training programs for the fleet and was the chief architect of the fleets entire organizational structure. He managed to take the alliances hodge-podge of ships and formed them into a coherent battle force that could go toe to toe with Imperial formations.

    • @SWPOTC1298

While I do love Ackbar, the credit for all of that belongs to Ackbar’s predecessor: Admiral Raddus. Raddus was the leader of the Alliance Navy and established the core of alliance naval doctrine from their early beginnings. Ackbar replaced Raddus as leader of the Alliance Fleet after Raddus’ death at Scarif, and was responsible for many amazing feats of his own, but the title of “father of the alliance navy” definitely has to go to Raddus.

He was instrumental for destroying Trawn's fleet and outsmarted him, even though we all know how capable Trawn was and if Bridger didn't defeat him and pulled him out in the unknown regions, I don't think that Rebel alliance would even exist when death star was destroyed - basically if Ezra didn't do what he did, we all know what came after but if he didn't saved Rebel alliance at Lothal + TIE defenders would change everything I can bet that rarely anyone thinks about that. Just imagine if imperials managed to mass produce TIE Defenders what would happen?
