  • Meet The Gaffer #330. Having some hands on fun with the new Astera Fresnels that incorporate the full color Titan light-engine, internal CRMX and internal battery just like their Titan and Helios tubes and Hydra bricks.

    I'd love to see Astera make a similar Leo/Pluto light with a separate power supply/internal battery. Maybe even modular, with the option to attach or detach the power supply/internal battery and connect a head feeder cable to the lamp head. This would be a great way to lighten the weight of the head for menace arm and other rigging.

      I agree with you, but that’s not their MO as they are mostly know for the beauty of their internal batteries and superior battery regulation/electronics. However their NYX bulbs were an exception to the rule, so who knows?

    Great Vid once more. For my specific usecase i think They Are simply Not Strong enough. Lets See when They get their lineup more up to Date if They will make me wanna use em . Have a good one

      The units were provided for review, not to keep, so I have not had the good fortune to continue to get to know the pluses and minuses of these units. I think there is a use case, but without the ability to hang on to them it’s hard to know if they would fit into regular usage. Batteries tend to give me “range anxiety”, so I like having removable batteries that provide the option to swap out power as needed. That said, we’ve gotten used to tubes, and with an Astera product you know the runtime will match real time pretty well. If I did a lot of run and gun outside, they could be great. If I was working a job where we were moving fast and power was hard to come by, they could be handy, but if they were a go to unit it seems like I would want double the amount so I could put them on charge, while still going with others. There are add-on batts available, but again, it would hard to know how often these would be needed unless I had a longer time to play with them and get to know how they would fit. The other side of it is that units with a certain output often need to be small and lightweight for rigging. These are on the heavier side, which is great for wear n’ tear, but not as quick for lightweight rigging scenarios. Nice that they are all-in-one, but maybe not for all scenarios.

    Hi Luke. I'm a commercial still photographer and I'm actually shooting a still-life today for a client - I'm using a few Mini Moles. You saying you're not using tungsten brings up a question: is Mole Richardson falling behind on LED tech? I know they make the Tener but they don't seem to be focused on LED. Maybe I'm wrong?

      Mole Richardson is all in on LED. They were actually on top of it big time from the beginning, but for one reason or another they did not get the traction companies like ARRI got with each new iteration. Manufacturing is harder than people think.

      Hi Luke. Thank you for the response. You'd think that established brands would have an easier go at it. Hmmm...maybe older brands get "tired" in the eyes of many? I have no idea how old my Moles are but they keep chugging along. Thank you again, Luke.@@meetthegaffer

    Isnt the 60c technically an 88w fixture?

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  Před 7 měsíci

      Oooh, good catch! I just put it on a meter and got 82 watts at 5600/100%. I misspoke. Thanks for calling that out.

      I noticed recently when comparing a few different nanlite products that the newer generation in addition to being bi-color & rgb have higher wattages than the name suggests. I only assume to provide a similar max output to their lesser counter part where they’re splitting up the diodes?
      May be an interesting video.. 60bii has a listed max output of 72w.
      Always appreciate the years of experience and level of technical knowledge on your channel.

      @@MikeDiNatale2740 Yes, manufacturers are all over the map! I try to stay on top of it, but sadly I’m not as thorough as Andrew Lock, so he’s a better source for the finer points. Thanks for keeping me honest!
