    Hey, Richpin.
    Tensioner bolt is 16mm Not a 14mm.
I just changed my belt on 1.9sohc. Its same for the
    Dohc engine.

Or u can use 2 wrenches on the bottom. 14mm box end on the nut. Another wrench with box end intertwined with the open end. Push em left/counterclockwise and reach up and take it off the ac compressor.

So, if you have a stubborn tensioner bolt, would cutting the old belt off relieve tension and possibly make it easier to loosen the bolt?
Haven't done the job yet, just looking at worst case scenarios.

    Very helpful video!
I didn't have the right kind of pipe handy, so I bought a small set of offset box end wrenches from the local auto parts place for $20 and the 14mm worked perfectly. Make sure they're offset (the "circle" should be 0.5 - 1.0" offset from the shaft of the wrench). You also want them to have some length (8"+) for leverage.

Very helpful, especially the length and shape of the tubular wrench extender. It has to be pretty exact, other things I tried first didn't work at all. I was worried I would not be able to get the new belt on, but it looks like a little persistence will do it. Good to know to first go over the power steering pump end, then thread the rest before holding belt against the AC pump and releasing tensioner to allow belt on. Nice, thanks, Rich!

Thanks a ton for this and all your videos, Richpin, but I have to agree with Frankiarmz: just jacking up the car and moving the splash shields makes this operation SO much easier for a beginner. I was attacking this thing from above for about a half hour before I broke out the jack. After that, I finished it in about 5 minutes.

I used a Dayco 5050780 in a 1997 SL2 and it was the same size as the old belt. Thanks for the pipe idea, that helped. I was able to get the old belt off in about 5 minutes. Getting the new one on was a different story, after spending about 10 minutes I could see that it was going to be a PIA. I took off the right tire and the front splash shield ( don't take off both splash shield, not required, just the front). Once I had access from below I was done in 5 minutes.

2002 Saturn SL2, I believe you are working on the same exact car. I simply cannot get the new belt on. My hands are all torn up! the tensioner will not give me enough room to put the belt over the air conditioner pulley. The last time I had a new tire replaced on that side, they or course used a compression tool, and I simply cannot remove the tire for better access. It looks so easy in your video, but the tensioner does not give me that much room. What is wrong, please?

Thank you for your great didactic videos. I replaced almost every part by myself))) by watching your videos.
I am planning on replacing idler pulley and serpentine drive belt at the same time. Do you think I can avoid AC ( it does not work) as it is shown on that little diagram under the hood. Should I remove the AC or I can leave the AC there and just install smaller drive belt in? What should I be aware of?

Rich I replaced the S belt 5 months ago. 2 days ago I heard noise and found the edge of the serpentine belt on my 2001 SL-1 Saturn. has started to shred . I took a knife and cut the lose belt. I replaced this Gates S belt now 2 days later the new belt had shredded and come off. The belt tension-er has enough tension and the 75% had got me home. What do you think might be the problem of ruin of new belts? Please give me your input. Many thanks.
