    I bought that same tensioner tool at Harbor Freight and I did cut mine exactly in half with a grinder and then I put the red plastic handle back on the shortened tool and it worked like a dream. 2007 ion.

    You can skip the special tool and going under the car. Like Madison below, I removed the lower section of the air box (one 10mm nut). Used a long screw driver to guide the belt from the top no problem. The tie-down / tape idea at 4:00 is brilliant! Worked like a charm to avoid the need for a special tool, breaker bar or ratchet.

    Thank you for this video! Hubby spent HOURS trying to get this f-ing belt on after changing my ac compressor. Less than 10 mins and a sheet rock lift and it's on!!!😂

    i put a little paracord around the tensoner arm and pulled up on it. It work perfect . Just had to use a litte muscle and having someone help guide the belt over the alternator pulley. Just a ghetto way to do it without a tensoner tool.

    I removed air box. Put Jack under engine. Removed the motor mount and took big flat head screw driver pried the pulley up. Done in no time.

    So I noticed where the motor mount was and decided to take the mount off and jack the motor up..gave me lots of room and didn't have to go from under the car at all

    I had no problem getting a 3/8ths chraftsman ratchet on the tensioner. Also if you remove the lower section of the air box (one 10mm nut) you can use a long screw driver and install the belt from the top no problem.

      You might have the same year, but I know the 2003 had a different engine than 2004 and on. If it works it's works though.. Thanks for the comments and contribution that might help others!

    You can pull the tensioner with a short wrench from the wheel well, when it opens the slit put there a wide flat screwdriver, so it won't close, it will jam on it. Then pull from the top with the long tensioner tool from Harbour Fright in addition to the original pull you sealed with that flat screwdriver. It will open more. All that worked for me (2001 Saturn Sl2). But I have wheel well open for some reasons and with the fenderwell splash shield removed.
    I have a question on this procedure to be done correctly. I know I need to check the drug on all pulleys before I put the belt. But do I need to clean the surface of pulleys with something? I sprayed some rusty bolts and other metal parts inside the engine bay with "Powerful Rust and Corrosion Protection" penetrant and lubricant (slightly, but still some probably got on those pulleys. Belt is off). It is Fluid Film. Probably now I need to clean all the pulleys (including a new accelerator pulley) with something? Or it is O'K and actually will be protecting them from possible rust? Thank you for the film.

      Olena Erhardt yes, you need to get the lube off of the surfaces, Personally if I could get at all the pulleys id probably spray them with brake cleaner and be done with it , or you may have to use an engine degreaser but then you will need to rinse with water...These are not things I have tried so I can’t say the outcome. I’d try the brake cleaner, it removes residual oil very well with no fuss. Perhaps someone has a better idea. As far as belt tension, if the tensioner is working properly there is nothing to adjust, it’s self adjusting.

      @@kd_enterprise3404 Thank you, I'll put on a shop towel some brake cleaner and try to clean just the surfaces. There was some rust on the nuts of all the pulleys, so that way the rust protective staff will stay on nuts, but not on pulleys. Then I'll put an old belt to see how everything is going, it will also clean and absorb in addition any residue of oil. Yes I know, I have an automatic belt tensioner. I just described how I removed the belt, it really worked for me with that flat screwdriver, then you remove it, after you are done with the belt. It is not enough clearance on 2001 Saturn to use the tensioner tool (or you need to remove the upper engine mount). Though in the Haynes book they say you can do everything from the wheel well. For me it was hard probably bcs I didn't have a wrench with proper handle. Thank you again.

    Very innovative but this is a two man job for getting the belt on for sure.

    How do i tighten the tensioner

    • @kd_enterprise3404
      @kd_enterprise3404  Před 6 lety +1

      The tensioner should not need tightening, it is spring loaded, if it doesn't automatically tighten the belt then something is wrong with it..
