When you said, "Believe it or not, Bud Selig..." I instantly believed whatever was gonna follow.
One of the cheapest owners in the history of the game, and the people of Milwaukee reward him with a statue.
@@Evom777they are honoring him this year by keeping the payroll under 100 million, lol. At least they figured out how to field a competitive team.
I had no clue about the Spiderman bases. I love baseball, and i love Spidey, but NO🤦🏼♂️😂😂😂
The same thing about the fans throwing the baseballs happened actually in St Louis at a Cardinal game that I was at back in 70s. I just remembered my dad saying let's get out of here because some of the balls weren't reaching the field they were hitting fans also.
It happened in Milwaukee too...around 96/97 on opening day
The Sisters promo is case and point on why sports should not get too involved in social and/or political activism.....people watch sports to get a break from that shit.
Yup, regardless if I do or don't agree with them(but I do find it funny they mock religion) keep that away from sports.
@@jbj7599 same!
You are exactly right, sports have gotten so woke I'm not even a die-hard fan like I used to be.
@@AlBundyPolkHigh. good, they don't need your crybaby ass cheering them on. Sorry you can't accept change
@@jbj7599no one’s ever mocked religion before, how unique and original……
Fernando Valenzuela autographed my vuvuzela in Venezuela.
Since you mentioned David Samson, his podcast is pretty enlightening and has a bunch of great front office stories. His explanations of how these promotions work makes it even more hilarious how these bad ideas make it through so many levels of approval
GREAT video Erik! I loved it. Very informative. Very interesting and very fun. I knew about the Disco night but not many of the other promotions. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video from beginning to end. 👍👍👍👍👍
15:38 LOL In 2024 I'm still waiting for Rap demolition night at a ballpark.
Many of these were actually brilliant promotions. The wet T-shirt contest, Eddie Gaedel, Disco Demolition Night and 10 cent beer night were epic!
As an LGBT person, I think it should be ok for teams to do pro LGBT stuff and promotions. But the dodgers are idiots for doing this for the sisters. I personally don't have a problem with it because I'm not christan, but they should have known this would give them a bad look. Like you're already taking a risk by doing something pro-lgbt as a sports organization, so to do it for a group which also makes fun of religion, the hate was bound to happen
Sisters of perpetual indulgence and wet t-shirt night were both bad ideas because it's not family friendly for a ballpark with kids, but I think most of us adult males at least appreciate the wet t-shirt night. If they're going to pander, at least know your demographic. Lots of dudes who go to ball games who like wet t shirts on women, not as many dudes who like the sisters of perpetual indulgence.
What about a male wet t-shirt contest?! You know damn well plenty of men would join that!!!
Little League promo games are the best for general vibe at the park.
7:52 - Baseball players are notorious for being superstitious. If the White Sox were winning every game that they wore those shorts, then I would have thought they would have begged Bill Veeck to keep wearing them. The Sox could have won the AL pennant instead of the Yankees.
Eddie gaedel was a good promo and so was the mariners futures uniforms
I don't think letting a little person actually play in a regular season MLB game is a good promotion..
@@HummBabyBaseball Hay what are you Randy Newman or something ? He got to live his life long dream. 😂😂😂
@paulbegley1464 haha I love Randy Newman got all his albums.
10 cent beer night, Disco Demolition, the Sisters, and giving baseballs to the fans were the worst. It should've been easy to see the problems those were gonna cause.
Am I the only person that's okay with the idea of the Turn Ahead The Clock promotion? I didn't find it that bad personally, and out of all of the PR stunts, this was by far the tamest with the highest margin of intrigue.
Not alone. Execution was dodgy, but the concept was a lot of fun. I'd like to think they inspired the Players Weekend & City Connect jerseys in the here & now.
They should have made it opt in, and instructed the teams make it unique and fun like the original game. The Mets were the only other team that took the promo seriously.
Disco Demolition night will always be my favorite
Disco Demolition my #1, but, understandable to put the cheap beer night #1
Just think; we got Wet T-shirt Night, AND the Death of Disco, AND the 10c Beer Night in the same decade. What a time to be a drunk in public scumbag.
Imagine destroying a stadium to the point of forcing your team to forfeit, only to be rewarded with ANOTHER 10c beer night that same season. I'm sure the '2 beer max' was strictly enforced with a hand stamp or something...
To this day Eddie Gaedel is MLB's all-time leader in on-base percentage.
No he isn't...the is a minimum plate appearance required that is alot more than one at bat...and there are literally dozens of other players, with a few at bats or less, that would be tied with him
@@justinkoeberl5797 Granted, he doesn't get official recognition because of the minimum requirement, and I'm sure he's only the co-leader. But I guarantee you're not finding anyone with a higher OBP. Anyway, I think you'll find baseball and life in general to be a lot more fun if you don't take things like the above comment so seriously.
@@big8dog887 ? Lol...all I did was correct what you said. Even without the minimum plate appearances there are literally over a hundred of players that have that same %...you seemed to think that was an extremely rare stat. It is not
@@justinkoeberl5797 Why don't you find elephants hiding in trees?
Because they're very good at it.
Are you the type of person who's going to say, "Well, actually, elephants don't have the gripping structure in their feet to be able to climb trees, also, they're much too heavy for most trees to hold."? The point is it was a facetious comment that also happens to be true, "correcting" it was completely unnecessary. Everything you say is 100% true, but also, painfully obvious.
I was there!! For all of them!!! Bat day 1969 Oakland a huge mele!!!!!! Most these promos are indicative of a very troubled society!! We appear to keep it outside in the parking lots in mlb. But, nfl, still has meles, so does nba, just nothing like the 60-90 period.what a great podcast!! Highly recommend!! If you haven't been arrested at candlestick in the parking lot, or evaded it, some magical way, your not abut a citizen faner.
A 41 y/o Spahn also pitched a 15 1/3 inning duel with Juan Marichal in 1963. Unfortunately, he gave up a walkoff HR to the say hey kid in the early hours of the morning.
I am a HUGE Spider-Man fan, so I would have LOVED to see the Spider-Man 2 bases. Granted, I was 12 when Spider-Man 2 came to theaters lol.
Very entertaining Erik great job
I like the Will Ferrell stunt, it was fun and meant to be that way. Garth and others? That shits a joke
Exactly
13:04 only in the 70s can you get away with this
Sickos doing nasty stuff in front of children isn’t family friendly
One promo and P.R. disaster missing is the 1979 all-burgundy Phillies uniforms. I think the Phils wore it for one game - in which they lost to the Expos - before putting them definitively to rest.
Good video Eric
Go Giants💯⚾
I really don't think the Gaedel promo was a bad thing, and the Giants jerseys on the future night were kind of cool I think.
Lol beer night was hilarious.never heard that one. Indians 2 beer limit lol
Wasn't there some violence during or after an A's game during a bat give away ?
Idk but there was a possum that took a dump in the announcers' booth and I find that hilarious.
I see the upcoming Mickey Mouse promotion to soon be on this list... wait till 4 years later for something thats a half joke... after the lack of free agents and udder failures to sign top guys.
Just stinks of jealousy.
Nah. Nothing wrong with poking a little fun. That's what big brothers do to little brothers.
I saw Garth Brooks with the Mets in Port St Lucie. He was certainly not in danger of being mistaken as a big leaguer.
If you ever do 10 best promotion video the million dollar home run that bell hit has to be on the list
Seriously who the hell decided 10 cent beer night was a good idea lmfao
ahahahhahahaha good one!!
Some of these promotions are so hilarious I want to call them a success…. But when they end in canceled games, unfair outcomes it people getting hurt, I guess I just can’t quite do it. Too bad. Thanks for the vid!
The Dodgers lost their "Pride" Night game 15-0. God, apparently, was not amused with their decision making.
By their arch rival the Giants too. And the Giants were terrible last year. And it was actually the worst home shutout @ss-kicking in Dodgers history!
The Giants weren't terrible in June when they won 10 games in a row. @@jonnyt16
Hey I was wondering if you could do maybe a top 10 best promotions for mlb? If not I understand.
So the parents didn't come along with the kids during the scrap promo?
Different times back then.
The mercuy mets were pretty sick.
Can we get some chapters or timestamps?
Did you do the exhibition games with the Melonheads?
What no ‘Handguns and Hard Alcohol Night’?
You say the Sisters should have never been invited because they are not family friendly. Do you think having Trevor Bauer on your team NOW is family friendly? You can’t have it BOTH ways Eric. 🤔
Or worse- MLB will become like soccer where the main sponsor is huge on the front of the jersey with the team name occupying a small patch.
Which reminds me, I need to look up MLS standings and check out how my Portland Alaska Airlines is doing
I like the giants futuristic uniforms
No. 5 was not only a disgraceful idea, it was Satanically evil. Boo to the Dodgers.
I believe Toledo football gave away those airhorns whatever they were called in the game against Missouri I think it was in 2014
He's talking about MLB let's not confuse NCAA just because you don't know any better.
They also gave vuvuzelas away as a promotion as people entered the stadium to watch a minor league baseball game in the city where I live. They never gave them away ever again. It seems as though various sports teams initially believe it's a great promotional giveaway, and then have second thoughts after they do it.
vuvuzulas sounds better than vuvuzelas
You know what no one jas ever said? We need politics in baseball!
"Don't back down to bullies"? They're called RELIGIOUS BELIEFS and just like an opinion everyone is entitled to them without the persecution from others. If your religion is against same sex relationships then you should not be ridiculed but this day in age if you don't support the ss relationships that makes your a "hater". Folks tend to hate things that are forced upon them starting with vegetables when we were kids and these days it's relationship statuses and political beliefs. If you don't agree with them then they try to "cancel" you, your business and even religion because they believe they have the right to tell us what to believe in. Screw that crap, I'm entitled to believe what I want just like the athletes that refuse to support things that their religion is against without the interference of anyone.
It’s vuvuzela NOT vuvuzula
That's what you took out of the entire video? It's not that big of a deal.. videos have little mistakes sometimes. Sorry; I thought I looked it up and spelled it right but I guess i messed up.
@@HummBabyBaseballthe spelling is as annoying as the sound it makes!
@@jbj7599 I don't know about that.. I'm sorry I spelled it wrong, but this day in age people can't even spell "too," so I don't feel too bad for misspelling a word most people have never even hard of.
Fernando Valenzuela autographed my vuvuzela in Venezuela.
@@HummBabyBaseball it happens, doesn't take away from the video, keep it up. I subbed a while ago cuz I like the different content
Man I really like ur channel and ur vids. I hope what I'm about to say is received well and not me trying to knock you. I've noticed something ur videos like this with clips and clearly r script r awesome for real and I watch a lot of sports vids/channels across all kinds of sports and I really think u have one hell of narration voice in the vids such as above but I've tried to watch ur videos where its u in front of camera talking about what u always talk about baseball, and I kept being like this isn't the same I'm not really feeling this vid and honestly don't watch those vids usually on ur channel and 100% it's not an appearance thing. I honestly feel ur voice sounds different in those vids compared to ones like this one, I was thinking something isn't the same but I honestly think it's probably the fact that odds r for vids of this style u reading from a script or have ur lines memorized compared to jus talking as you go and even if what u r saying is relevant in those vids it's just not the same anyway thought about saying that b4 , hope u nothing but success but truly think u could blow on youtube if u focus on the vids where u narrate more than others b it jus baseball or even other sports...ur voice in "these type of vids" like above is so perfect for sport narration
I'd say to you go away you knocked the guy. If you can do better make your own damn videos if not leave the man alone.
i guess being a fan but also having their own perspective is not what u think should b okay either way ill still watch and u have a good day @@terencehill2320
I do both documentary style videos like this and more free baseball talk videos like when i do postgames and MLB free agent talk.. so that's why they sound different. I could go full time documentaries and I would probably be even more successful to be honest, but a lot of people would be disappointed because they enjoy the regular baseball talk videos and livestreams too.
i get that everyone likes what they like keep doing u and thanks for the reply

@@OldDirtyPhil I hope that what I'm about to say is received well, and isn't interpreted as me trying to knock you. I noticed your grammar, sentence structure, and lack of paragraph structure render your post unpleasant and almost painful to read. If you'd like to share your thoughts more effectively with people and be taken more seriously, I highly recommend that you clean up and structure your writing to legible standards.
I'm confused by the shorts- during the time it happened shorts were not only used in other sports (NBA) but also within the general public as well so I wonder why the shorts were seen as bad and funny then but not in any of the countless other cases? Especially when compared to the length of the NBA and general public's shorts that were essentially booty shorts they were so short and these went badly above the knee if not lower 🤔
Crazy the White Sox actually won all three games they wore the shorts in. Just seems crazy impractical. Wouldn't wanna try to steal a base in them in probably any circumstance, or have to make a diving catch on astroturf. But I have to admit, I've always really liked the overall design of them. And I find it looks much better with shorts than pants. But I *loved* the Turn Ahead The Clock nights too (though I do completely agree most of those unis were trash), so maybe I just like to watch the world burn and/or have a sense of humor sometimes. Who can really say for sure?
Also, being that I am trans myself, I 1000000% support the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence being invited to Dodger Stadium & rewarded for their community service. They're good people who do great things, and they joyfully take the piss outta overly serious fundamentalist nutbars while doing it. Chaotic good is the best kind of good. However, I will say the team absolutely should've been prepared for the backlash/backlash to the backlash/so on/so forth, so they didn't come off looking so wishy-washy & weak in the face of violent bigotry. They're a multibillion dollar corporation. They can afford people with enough real world experience to know just how dangerous the waters they were about to step into were, and then decide to either nut up & carry on regardless or back out before it became *a thing*.
The depressing reality is that it doesn't matter if you're in a comfortably blue state. Religious conservatives are vicious, blindly hateful, bloodthirsty animals who want to subjugate and/or destroy anything that doesn't think or act exactly as they do, by any means necessary. If you're gonna stand up for LGBTQ+ people, you have to understand you're putting yourself in the path of an unfathomable deluge of completely unhinged, intentionally misinformed, potentially violent hatred. Being on the right side of history shouldn't be as stupidly difficult as it is, but that's just life right now. On a possibly related not, I'm so tired... But that all tediously said, I am very glad the Dodgers ultimately found the backbone to do the right thing in the end.
