I've got a friend that would really like to play this game, but is afraid to buy it because he fears "his community" would frown upon him.
Only thing I told him was, he's a grown up man who can make up his own mind and should not care what others think.
If he loses friends or gets kicked out of a community for buying a game that community never considered him as much of a friend to begin with but only saw him as a foot soldier to parrot whatever they deem correct.

That's something I can agree with most times. (How you attributed the quote is hilarious by the way.) However, the woman did state she sees support for the game as support of her ideas. And she did donate to anti-trans lobbying and anti-abortionist groups. That's why some people see buying the game as political. (I personally don't think boycotting it is gonna work or change anything. If it flopped, she would blame the studio and still think people agree with her.)

Hey I just want to say that not all trans people are this deranged, most of us don't live on Twitter and actually have lives. It sucks that these terminally online weirdos constantly get to speak for the rest of us but please don't listen to them, they aren't representative of us as a whole. One of the worst things about this Rowling/Harry Potter situation is that NOBODY has been able to tell me what she said, or how it is morally wrong to say so. I've asked every person who's told me she's "problematic", every trans person I know irl who hates her, and they can never tell me what she said wrong. They just say "she says I don't deserve to live", which I've looked up and seen zero signs of. This whole trans/non-binary/woke world we live in has become absolutely abysmal
I only bothered looking into this after seeing Dave bring her up in his stand-up for Netflix because I never cared much for HP or famous people drama ... I lost a number of "friends" by pointing out that I looked up all her tweets and her essay on the topic and didn't find anything she said that's hateful or wrong.
She believes in live-and-let-live for the most part, like any normal person. "Wear what you want and call yourself w/e you want. Live your best life" or w/e.
But transing kids? Nope
Demolishing women's sex-based rights to allow males to self ID into female bathrooms/ prisons/ rape centers/ medical centers/ sports and other protected spaces that they fought for? Nope
Firing and canceling/ censoring women who speak out against this? Nope
So she's now the devil to these people, because she doesn't hand over women's rights on a platter for the TRA and their demands.

I think the problem is there are people who, instead of seeking information to find the truth like you two have done, they'd rather just hear what offends them. So, they don't bother researching it themselves as they'd rather just believe Rowling is hateful. So when you say you've read her tweets and there's nothing wrong with the tweets, they push you away, as they want to be offended.

In SEA, at least my country - i sometimes misgendered some LGBT person i met for the 1st time because I really don't know how the best to address them and they would politely corrects or doesn't mind. @@mimicinabox2547 I think there is a huge amount of factors, I am from Mexico and the overall sentiment here is that by default Americans are more entitled, also the political debate over trans rights is very heated these days, so i can imagine the comunity being more wary of such incidents.
Personally I wouldn't mind being misgendered by a stranger because duh, they're strangers, but if an acquaintance, family member or coworker keeps doing it despite me already explaining the situation to them I think it is safe to asume they do it out of sheer disrispect

We don't *need* to 'separate the art from the artist'. We need to be more mature about our own experience of, and response to, the world. We need to accept diversity of viewpoint and that the people who create the things we love *might* not have the precise views we would prefer them to have. As far as Harry Potter is concerned, nothing about Rowling's views has any effect on how we enjoy her work; if we *are* affected in any way, we are learning something about us and not about her, or about art.
We are going through a culture in which activism is a dominant way of life (even though most activists are few in number, they are often the loudest and - as their name would suggest - the most 'active' on any issue). Activism is based around a very black and white way of thinking, where some things are 'bad' and other things are 'good'; while there are some neutral things, activists will claim that preferring neutrality is to let the bad things win, and that we should always choose the good over the bad. The only times in history where activism has worked is when it recognises that, in practice, it needs to be more complicated and nuanced, and to accept that most people don't want to get involved (e.g. civil rights in the US, or gay rights in most Western nations). The outcry against HP, and Rowling in general, is an example of the good vs. bad thinking of activism, and if you add to that the propensity for activism to be carried out in hyperbolic terms (e.g. they will talk about 'transphobia' and claim that a trans person's very existence is being denied, rather than admitting that the point of disagreement is quite small and that Rowling herself has expressed no animosity whatsoever towards transgender people) you end up with the situation we're in today.
Ultimately Hogwarts Legacy will sell by the truckload. Why? Not because people are transphobic, or immoral, but because wanting to be involved in something we love *vastly* outweighs wanting to exclude something someone else hates.
She only discusses transwomen in the context of her fear of men getting into women's spaces, described transgender health care as mutilation, before opening a shelter that rejects ''men and those who identify transgender women''. Right of the bat, women's shelters in the UK have operated in a way that lets transwomen in for ten years without an issue. Transwomen are statistically at higher risk for domestic violence and rape. So she created a shelter that rejects those who will need it the most in response to something that's not there. How on earth is she not transphobic? Overstatement of harm is common method in bigotted circles to make their reaction look more proportionate than it is.
Great video, thanks. I agree with you, all this makes me very sad. I feel so bad for that person who was fired over something like this. I hope they will find a better place to work in soon. All this "if you like X, you are the problem and a bad person" mentality that is so commonplace these days makes me very sad as well. There are plenty of real bad people out there in the world, we really don't need people making claims like this over something "trivial" as a video game.
I wish people could just let people like what they like and do the same themselves. It is truly a sad world, if people need to start to tiptoe around conversing about the things they like in fear of being seen as "problematic". :( As you said at the end of the video " just do what makes you happy". is a good advice.
I just hope these kinds of stories start waking people up and calling more attention to the culture wars.
I know of people who woke up to all this shit because of the reaction mainstream media had to people who reviewed Star Wars 8 poorly, despite all the very legitimate complaints about bad writing. So I think there will be some sections of Harry Potter fans that will realize that their series is now a part of the culture war too.

Video games got hit back in 2012-2015 with all the gamergate shit, Star wars has had it with the new trilogy, Sports is constantly getting it from the likes of ESPN and the sports leagues themselves, now it's HPs turn.

I've always believed people should follow their own thoughts; whatever you believe, that's your choice. However, I'm a history enthusiast, so I know this new pattern of shaming people or canceling them until they lose their job, reputation, or worse. I will admit that I do tend to vote with my wallet. If a company backs something I don't like, then I'll look for an alternative if I can. I don't buy EA games out of principle anymore due to the heavy and predatory dlc and microtransactions that they have included in several of their releases. The only exception to this has been It Takes Two. I also give ubisoft games a hard look over now after playing 2 of their titles that had completely unnecessary microtransactions.
In other industries, I do try to avoid Disney which is getting harder since they own so much. I don't use apple and I try to avoid using tech from mainland Chinese companies. Can't always do it, but I try. Can't avoid google, eventhough i probably have the most greavences with them.
The only time I tend to avoid specific people's works is if they get very preachy about their ideology. For example, I don't listen to green day anymore at all, can't enjoy it the same way I used to anymore after that.
The thing I find the most funny about it is they consider her a far-right troll because of her not agreeing with them on the trans issue. She literally shares every single other opinion on feminism with them. I don't agree with her on hardly anything, but she has actually tried to do a lot for women. It means absolutely nothing to them though because she doesn't want trans women in women's only space.
I grew up absolutely loving the franchise. I grew up in a very frighteningly similar situation to Harry. Lived in a house where I was hated just for existing. Had the very smart friend who was a girl. And a tall lanky ginger best friend with 5 siblings. I also grew up wanting to game over because of my home situation. And I remember turning 11 for months every day I checked the mail hoping that I would get a letter going somewhere where I could feel wanted. Obviously it never came. But the book’s literally saved my life. And they gave me my passion for learning. I owe everything to the books and movies. I even spent 4 years studying wand/wood magic from all over the world to find my perfect wand. So I finally have a dream come true in this game is not something I could pass up. The moment I mentioned I bought the deluxe edition I received hate messages, threats on my life, and lost about 15 friends on Facebook. And that hurt. I’m an ally. And I will fight for trans rights and lives. But please allow me this one bit of joy. I won’t even talk about the game around you if it hurts you. I’ll respect you. Please respect me.
Harry potter based off White English people where wizards exist and most of this games advertising shows a default dark skin character and people are still trying to cancel it. Even when you try to pander to the woke audience they will still cancel you and hate you.

I don't like JK, but the world was a big part of my life and helped me at times I was in a bad place. All the mob has done has encouraged me to support the developer fully by paying $60-70 instead of the $30 I was going to spend on a sale.
Trans gamer here. If people say "separate the art from the artist" the same people should also say "separate the bad apples from the good ones" too. The boycott went bad and some people wanted to "cancel" those ones who were interested in the game, but because there were some bad apples in the LGBT community doesn't mean that all trans should face one more stigma because of those bad actors. The vast majority of the trans people don't even care about the existence of this game or J.K. Rowling, not because politics, but because they are not interested in the gaming landscape or Harry Potter in the first place. So still, the success of this game should not become one more excuse to normalize a little more of transphobia (that will be added to the already existing big one) and "Woke" witch hunting, or the whole discussion about being against the "cancel culture" behind this game would be hypocritical and self defeating. Blame the media that likes to inflate everything instead.
Said that, not buying this game and feeling morally superior is definitely wrong, BUT, not being transphobic and feeling morally superior to transphobic people is definitely right. An opinion based on hate is not valid in any case, being the hate for those who like this franshise or the trans community.

I'm an author in addition to a CZcamsr. I know for a fact that not everyone who reads my books or watches my channel agrees with everything I believe.
Knowing about these disagreements has, thus far, not affected anything. By good fortune, I've accumulated a modest but respectful audience, and we have a mutual understanding that a difference of opinion is just that and nothing more.
The main factor in making that happen is respect. I am usually very careful in saying that no one is obligated to agree completely with my outlook, nor do I condescend to my audience when speaking, and they respond in kind. Those who do not usually part ways of their own accord. My books also tend to have well thought out reviews, be they positive or negative, as opposed to stuff such as the video describes.
I bring this up to show that there is still sanity in the world...and a bit to self-promote, but mostly the first point.

I have a friend who literally told me not to buy hogwarts and I said why knowing what J.K. Rowling said and she said something with the creator. So I said what did she do and she was like "I heard she was transphobic." She doesn't even know what J.K. Rowling said she's literally just going with what she heard on social media. Half the people don't even know why they want or wanted to boycott the game in the first place for.
I think even cancelling JK Rowling was very stupid. I mean, can't a person, who happens to be the auther of a beloved franchise, have her own beliefs and ideologies? What has happened to the freedom of speech/express? And cancelling Hogwarts Legacy because of JKR is the next level of stupidity...

One thing a lot people don't know about the Harry Potter IP. JK Rowling needs to give the green light for anything to be done within the IP because of how God tier her contract is. She has absolute veto power on all Potter related products. So even if you can make trans characters its not without her allowance

Just a friendly advice: when a piece of news anger you, start form the principle that anger sells and try to fact check what is being said. Had there been people trying to blacklist it, there would have been an online petition for it somewhere. There isn't , therefore it just didn't happen. Being abused as a kid, I loved escaping via reading. My grandma was a huge harry potter fan and owned all the books which she subsequently gave me to read. They have a lot of sentimental value to me not only because they were gifted to me by someone I loved but also because I sort of related deeply to Harry and his experiences living with his aunts family and getting to escape to the fantastical world.
I was fairly young when I read the books so I never made the connections of terrible stereotypes and ideas to real life. I understand that there are problematic ideas in the books and it makes me uncomfortable to some extent but overall I've remained very attached to the series due to my childhood.
It is deeply saddening to me that I could be made out to be a bad person because I still love and consume media from this series. People just don't understand the different perspectives and experiences others have had that make thwm attached to HP.

Anyone telling you that you’re a bad person for enjoying Harry Potter is someone who has never done anything for the cause they are fighting for other than shame people. You can not agree with a writer/artists point of view, but anyone denying the quality of their craft because of their beliefs is delusional.
This sort of thing has arguably been going on in movies since ghostbusters 2016. It benefits nobody; mobs on both sides turn hostile on each other, the people working on it get raked over the coals. The worst part with that was it seemed studios noted what happened with that movie and fanned the flames. It becomes a cheap trick to sell something, no matter how mediocre or outright bad it is, any legit criticism is written off as bigotry or ignorance for one political group over another. It makes entertainment more sterile, artificial and boring. The game looks good, I was skeptical after the monetization schemes WB pulled with Shadow of War, but tbh I’m not in a rush to play it either with how loaded this year is expected to be with releases so it’s lower on my list.

I just don't believe it's ok to make a change that doesn't make any sense to me and that's done for a reason that doesn't make any sense when there are better alternatives. And I can't lie, as much as I am for representation and equality, I'm getting exhausted with these inclusions lists and checkboxes. I'm exhausted with everyone's only concern about a character being their religion, race, who they schmooze if they do at all or what's between their legs... I miss the days when we could just judge fiction based on its actual quality and we liked a character because they were entertaining.

11:15 the biggest company that I can think of that are just completely hypocritical about things like this is Tencent, the Chinese Megacorp that owns Riot Games and League of Legends.
They have a very homophobic history and are still actively very strict on what kind of representation is allowed in League and Valorant and they make Billions off of these games. From how things are ran in the other servers across the planet, I'm convinced that the only reason we have the pride month event in NA and Europe is because it's profitable.

Then, if there's the overall sentiment that anyone who buys this deserves a "F U" and harrassment from online people boycotting this game, I'd say that spreads tons of MORE hate around the world to a whole lot of people who might not have anything against trans people.
Then, if both of those scenarios only do harm to others and have very little to no affect on Rowling and her opinions, can we expect that this whole scenario will somehow make those, who yet don't have much sympathy or understanding towards the trans community, now have more sympathy for them? Or will they have less sympathy towards something that is hating on them for buying a videogame? That is boycotting an entertainment product that is currently being worked on by people who want to do things right? Will that send an image that promotes understanding difference, or something that promotes more back and forth hate? I feel like it's the latter.
In other words, this whole thing is ... absurd. I can think of all those ways of how it causes negative things, but I can't really manage to think what benefits it will have... other than to those who want to virtue signal and get likes on twitter... and who want to appease angry people.
