as a lesbian and aspiring screenwriter/filmmaker, i almost wish they would’ve just left the half-assed ‘representation’ out of the new fantastic beasts movie. trans people are an integral part of the queer community, and no amount of representation for one part of our community is worth the oppression of another part.

Yes, especially since they'd said back in 2018 that they wouldn't explore this relationship in the movies. Is it an attempt to appeal to the lgb(but not the t) community or even to divide us? Like jk Rowling swears up and down she's not transphobic because she's an ally to gay people and we're supposed to believe that..
Nope, we're one community, if you don't respect some of us, you respect none of us. And it's not even good representation. Let's go support creators who respect all of us AND know what they're doing with their queer rep.

yeah, but honestly a lot of jewish, black, asian and trans (specially transfem people, since JKR is a rampant transmisogynist) people will still feel very uncomfortable with seeing others still making, sharing or buying HP related products, be they from independent artists or not. As a nonbinary person who is very active intracommunity wise, it's just so disheartening for many in the trans community to see (mostly cis) people rave and gush over this and that about HP and their indie HP thing they bought, even if they are boycotting JKR. I know it's not their intention, but it kinda feels like that their attachment to this piece of fictional media trumps over standing up for the people who have been hurt by JKR's bigotry. And I say this as someone who did grow up with HP. If I, a nonbinary transmisogyny exempt person can drop ever mentioning HP in a positive light, you can too. It's not really as difficult as people make it out to be. Plus, in retrospect the books were littered with underlying bigotry and meh writing. There is PLENTY of fantasy/magic media for you all to consume. Just move on to that.

JKR has been able to enact serious harm on trans people in my country precisely because of the social capital she wields, not just her money. Obviously if someone is gonna buy HP stuff then it's infinitely preferable they do it without supporting her financially, but continuing to fuel the social phenomenon of HP by talking about it, making art, buying replicas etc still empowers her through perceived relevancy (we live in a world where "success" of any kind is seen as qualification to talk on any subject you choose), not to mention it makes a lot of marginalised people very uncomfortable. I used to be a huge Harry Potter fan, and I've moved on. I wish everyone else would.

Another thing that bothers me is how angry Rowling seems to get whenever someone writes a fanfic or a headcanon she doesn't approve of. To me, this is the antithesis of Mister Rogers, who always encouraged children to "make up your own stories" about his Neighborhood of Make-Believe characters. But if there was ever anyone who cared more about children feeling free to be creative than about profit motive for himself, it's Fred Rogers.

    • @P.Whitestrake

It's normal as a writer, especially when she already set the fundamentals, traditions, & rules within the vast universe she has created. She creates & owns that universe. Let's say, you built a house through your hard work for years & years & years, then some strangers came into your house, moved the furnitures, changed the wall colours, & added or threw things away. How would you feel?
If you don't like it, instead of ruining that universe through a stupid fanfic that ruins & corrupts the fundametal lore of the universe, how about making your own? Mr. Roger was right. Make up your own stories instead of twisting & ruining an already-established story.
It's the same case with Fifty Shades of Grey. The novel was started off as a Twilight erotic fanfic, but the Twilight writer didn't approve it & disliked it, so the fanfic writer remade her Twilight fanfic into something new that can be separated from Twilight series. That's how Fifty Shades of Grey was made.

@@P.Whitestrake i mean if an author doesnt like fanworks then they dont have to engage. you cant and honestly shouldnt stifle fanworks, thats how many people get into art and writing in the first place.
what's particularly annoying about it for rowling is that she used to be supportive of fanfic and headcanons, but shes turned her heal on that crowd to canonise bullshit takes that are not supported in the actual work (ie. she said hermione is black but not only was she, actually acknowledged as a very pale white person)
also if you really think fanfiction, which definitionally *is not canon*, "ruins and corrupts" stories, that's, uh... that's for you to deal with. people who engage with fanfiction don't do so to supplant the original work, but as a love for the series. some fanfics are legitimately bad, but *who cares*? fanfic writers just do this for fun. many fanfics are written by teens and often serve as character, theme, lore analysis, and exploring what-ifs that would happen with those characters in different situations.
also someone writing fanfiction is not at all comparable to someone remodelling your house without permission.
btw genuinely i cant stress this enough, authors who don't like fanworks or different interpretations of their work and who get angry about something not being strictly the interpretation they wanted the reader to have either, uh, shouldn't be writers, or they shouldn't engage. it's not that hard. that's neil gaiman's approach to fanwork, and if i were to ever get a book published, it would be mine, too.

We have a gay in our movie!!” It can still be edited out though, because there are only a few lines referring to it. Even still, the normalization of Kaitie just casually being gay and not making a big deal out of it was one of the best gay representations I’ve seen, and would like more characters like this. However I do agree in this case that the representation is really not representation at all, and just something half-heartedly added to appeal to the LGBTQ audience

I mean I guess. I agree that the movie rep was bad. But the “this representation isn’t good enough so the film is bad” arguments is so tired and stupid, a lot of creators fight so hard with execs just to get even the slightest thing into their media, and so they try to code the characters as lgbt+ (coding and baiting are not the same but people forget that), they take hat they can do. Now honestly, knowing JKR, I highly doubt she fought even remotely for that scene or anything more, but let’s not forget the writers aren’t always at fault, and the rep isn’t inherently bad because it’s not explicit.

While brownies do have a bit of lore that they’d leave the house forever if given clothes, there’s doesn’t seem to be anything that says it’s them being freed from being owned.
I’ve heard the whole house elf slavery thing was Joanne justifying why Dobby was restricted in his ability to keep Harry safe, but if Joanne really wanted Dobby to be a slave owned by the Malfoy’s and bound by orders, she could have made it so some wizarding families trick house elves into being slaves and forced to obey orders. Perhaps it could be legal due to the power those families hold, yet it could be generally regarded as taboo or the main characters at the very least don’t have to endorse it. Maybe the Weasley household could have had a house elf who just chooses to be at the Weasley household to further show that the Weasleys are good hearted people who don’t need to trick a house elf into working for them. While the Weasleys wouldn’t be able to afford to pay a house elf, perhaps the house elf insists on doing chores anyway in exchange for food and board though the Weasleys treat this house elf as part of the family. Arguably the most attractive male character described in the entire series was the main antagonist (Tom Riddle), and Bellatrix, Narcissa and even Grindelwald were all described as good looking. Plus, most of the heroes were depicted as nerdy or conventionally unattractive. In the books, Harry, Ron and Hermione are all average looking. Hermione is described as being pretty when she puts effort into her appearance, but for the most part they’re not particularly attractive.

I have encountered these types of authors in my career and they’re generally insufferable.
I mentioned this on another video, but it is true that boycotting HP things won’t really hurt JKR financially. She lives in a hacking castle, she’s fine. We make mistakes, do bad things, and sometimes do things we know are wrong for personal gain. This is worse for some people, but it's undeniable that there are parts deep down inside of us or long ago in our past that are disgusting and horrible things that anyone with any morality would shudder the thought. For some of us, we learn and grow. That's not the case for everyone, and some people do things many consider unforgivable, but that is a part of living in world with free will. We can't destroy entire monoliths of culture because the man or woman behind it was a horrible person. If we did that, we wouldn't have any pieces of work at all.
The fact that we as a society can't acknowledge that it's worth keeping certain pieces of art around, in spite of, or even to the benefit of, horrible people, scares me. Art is how we know half of what we know about history. We would live in disgusting ignorance of our history if we dismissed everything created by a bad or even reprehensible human. The people may not realize this, but they're advocating for a Fahrenheit 451 future, in which we fear books not for what they may contain, but for who may have created them.

I'm so glad you mentioned the goblins being antisemitic! I feel like some people just brush over it and act like the problems started with JK's transphobia. It's understandable if you didn't notice the antisemitism or it didn't fully sink in how poorly handled the elves were when you were a kid, but when you get older, it's important to recognize the problems here. Man, I loved this series, but you have to admit that it was sort of rotten from the start. Separating the art from the artist is all well and good, but what do you do when the art itself has the same rot in it? The problem isn't just JK's transphobia, but a lot of the stuff she put in her books, how the world works. Obviously, as a nonbinary person, I'm not jazzed about the transphobia, but the rot, the rot has been in the books all along, and we shouldn't ignore the antisemitism and the elves. It sucks, because I always loved Nevile, and Harry, and Luna. I love Luna especially, as an autistic person, when I was a kid, I felt glad to have someone who was just as bizarre as me, and yet was still a part of the group. Luna was so important to me. But she's from a series that is rotten. So what should I do with that? I'm not going to consume any new official works, because I don't want to give JK money. Money that she will only use to hurt me. But I don't know... if it's as easy as others say to let go. When I was young, before Mabel, and Star Butterfly, Luna was the only character I had that was weird like me. And that was important to me. But... The art from the start was tainted. I didn't notice when I was a kid, but so much in Harry Potter is tainted with harrowing ideology. And I can't support it, even if a part of me will always love parts of it.

As someone who never got into harry potter, I can't imagine the difficulty in trying not to be hard on yourself for internalizing media made by someone causing active harm. It seems even harder considering that while fan content is definitely a better option, even participating in the culture could convince someone new to start the series and give Rowling money. It's a difficult situation, but at the very least she seems to be making disliking new content pretty easy. About the game, I saw someone say that yeah, they would normally think about pirating to keep her from getting money but no matter where the money goes, why would they want to play the antisemitic blood libel game?

Today, when your participation is only checked via socials and outrage has become a marketable drug, people burn out on all these impassioned moralisms quickly. Most boycotts these days are founded upon highly-sensitive, if well-intentioned, principles. Back in the day, boycotts were often conducted by those whose lives were endangered or whose ways of life were effectively crushed by legislation. You'll maintain fervor when your options are segregation or death: these are both unthinkable. You'll lose steam within a week if your options are "Keurig" or "no keurig." It's estimated that around 80% of the people who threw their keurig machine out during the boycott bought another one eventually. Didn't even switch to a competitor.

Bisexuality is loving both ends, and pansexuals love the entire spectrum with no inbetweens.

I'm firmly in the camp that "death of the author" literally cannot apply to authors still alive and benefitting from their IP. I think a good example to add to your examples is H. P. Lovecraft. The man was a bigot, racist, and sexist. He wasn't a good person and, honestly, his stories kind of reflect that. However, not only is he a major foundation to the cosmic horror genre, he's also a big reason as to why it's become a part of the mainstream and is getting a resurgance in popularity. However, death of the author applies here. He's fucking dead. He didn't copyright his works properly, and there's no estate benefitting from it. Most, if not all, of his stories are available online and for free. You can read them all without benefitting the author. In addition, because of the "indescribable" narrative, you can repurpose the ideas to go away from his bigoted thoughts. Take Victor LaVelle's "The Ballad of Black Tom". It's a reimagining of one of Lovecraft's racist stories. THIS is what death of the author is. For authors that are still actually alive, you can't apply death of the author because they will still benefit.

I think that criticism of this type of villain is a gross oversimplification of the actual problems these types of villains (Well-Intentioned Extremist) cause.
A good work will acknowledge that the intention is good, but will criticize the meanswith which they use to accomplish or maintain said goal, especially if it resorts to harming or downright killing many people, including innocents. Related are the consequences that accomplishing said goal causes. If the game is written well (which admittedly none of us have any idea that it will be), it will acknowledge the goblin's good intentions, but also show them engaging in morally dubious actions as a result of attempting to reach said goal, or otherwise causing terrible, unintended consequences as a result.
It was also criticize them for doing this.
If the game is written particularly well, the player could end up fighting with the goblins against both the Death Eaters and the status quo (albeit in a different, healthier way) or alternatively the player could show the goblins how to fight for their rights in a way that doesn't cause significant damage to innocents.

Maybe you could even give the player or some other main character an arc where, while he still disagrees with the goblin's actions, he comes to understand and sympathize with their plight and maybe can then advocate for a better solution.

i don’t think dr seuss is going to profit off someone buying the cat in the hat in 2022-- and at least his descendants an estate have come out about the xenophobia and racism in seuss’ work and some of it isn't for sale anymore. THEY are making changes.. but when it comes to someone like JK Rowling, she profits a LOT off of interaction with harry potter, even if you buy fanmade perch and read fanfiction, i think she still profits culturally and socially. obviously i’m not demanding people to cut out harry potter completely. but. i think that encouraging the enjoyment of other stories that center a more diverse life (written by LGBTQ, BIPOC people) is a much better use of our time. we should spend all the energy we’re using to argue about jk rowling into uplifting stories and creators instead.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 was the first movie that I went to watch in the cinema by myself. (I even got the special limited edition 3D glasses). When I was younger, JKR was my role model and I looked up to her and wanted to be like her. I even started reading it to my niece to introduce her to the joys of reading (tho I have since stopped because I don’t want to engage with it anymore), etc etc.
But when I try to read it now, its like the magic is gone from the world. It doesn’t feel as alive as it used to. It feels dull and grey. And, worse, every time I engage with the franchise in any way I can’t help but think about how jkr is using that money and engagement to fund campaigns that directly hurt me as a trans person. If people want to still engage with the series coz its nostalgic or its their comfort fandom or whatever then good for them but I have never seen more people bending over backwards to justify why they continue to consume this particular piece of media. Okay, whatever. You do you. But I’d rather not engage with those discussions at all because JKR is still alive and profiting off people’s nostalgia and using that to hurt people. In the future, once she’s no longer profiting off it, maybe I’ll be able to go back to it but that isn’t happening any time soon.
And as a mildly related point. I find it so funny how often people like JKR talk about how they don’t have a voice, or they’re being spoken over, or their free speech is being infringed upon etc etc when they have a twitter platform with millions of followers and have been directly quoted/namedropped by multiple politicians both in relation to proposing new laws around trans ppl and otherwise. How does she have no voice when her voice is louder than pretty much every trans person’s voice? Why is Cho Chang a bad name? Like, just that one, not the others you mentioned which are obviously ridiculous. The character is Asian-British. Why would she require an English name? Asian names are names just like any other. If the character was non-Asian it would be different, because then it’s cultural appropriation. But why can’t Asian characters have Asian names?
I think of it this way:
As a writer, if I were to make a Korean character and give her a Korean name, why would people call me out for it? Rather the focus should be on how well I wrote that character, like if that character was authentic. If I am getting criticized by non-Koreans because of the name I chose, I feel that wouldn’t do anything to help me improve my writing. I’d rather have people (Korean people in this case) give me contructive criticism. As a non Korean I would take them seriously because if I were offending them, I’d want to fix that.
Of course, the discussion then can be “should white people be allowed to write nonwhite people?” And to that I say yes. The alternative of having everyone stick to writing their own race, gender, ethnicity, nationality, age, ability…it would get plain very quick. marginalized writers can help each other out. As a disabled woman, I’ll help someone write disabled woman. As a Asian person, someone can help me write Asian characters. I truly believe white people can write unproblematic Asian characters if they do their research and consult the communities they are choosing to reference.

I am a huge HP fan. I cannot stress this enough. I’ve read the series more than a dozen times. They were everything to me growing up, a great escape in a violent household. The characters and the worlds began to mean so much to me. Plus I was the exact age (11) of the kids the year the first movie came out. The series was the first of many book series that sucked me in and meant something to me personally.
I’m also non-binary. It’s a huge part of my identity, bigger and much more vast than my love of HP.
I didn’t realize much of the problematic (at best) content in the books and movies until I was around 22 or something. That’s when I decided I would no longer financially or otherwise support JK. That didn’t matter so much because I already owned two sets of the books and all of the movies. I was never one for merch or anything. But it hurt my feelings because I really looked up to her and I found her profoundly empowering.
I didn’t follow her stuff or pay attention to anything she was saying or doing. I just assumed she was a good person because she made something so magical to me. But it was obvious that tweet wasn’t an isolated incident or misunderstanding. And that really, really hurt me. As soon as I heard a slam poem about Cho Chang, I was out of her camp. But the TERF realization hit close. And that really sucked. I would never support someone who does this stuff.
Edit: I never got into Fantastic Beasts or games.
I’m a Harry Potter fan, of MY Harry Potter, the world it built for me, everything. I still read the books on occasion, as I read many YA series that I loved growing up.
The place Harry Potter took and takes me is NOT JK’s Harry Potter. And it really sucks that she tarnished parts of it, but the magic, I’ve kept for me. My books are old, weathered, water-stained, and they remind me of the time I sat on the floor of our bathroom and read the 5th book in one day with everything I needed right there so I didn't have to leave. "Offensive caricatures of Jewish people"... I mean, the stereotype isn't unknown to me, but I think this a bit of a reach. If anything, they're held in higher regard within the world of wizards and witches than they are anywhere else, hence the European folklore surrounding them. If you apply that to the HP lore, it's almost like you're seeing the documented demonization of goblins throughout history. What are, in actuality, crafty, intelligent, and reasonable creatures, were probably seen as grotesque demons in the eyes of medieval-era townsfolk. I'm not trying to swing either way, concerning Rowling's position on trans people. However, to say that a seemingly discriminated group within the HP lore are offensive stereotypical portrayals of Jewish people, seems hyperbolic.

Thank you! I actually brought this up when commenting on another video about Rowling and someone replied to me saying that I was the antisemite for "comparing antisemitic goblins to a mythical Harry Potter creature" where I responded saying, "Have you seen antisemitic portrayals of Jews before, especially as goblins?" because I cannot unsee it after I saw Jon Stewart point it out one time (I have never consumed HP myself) where I looked them up afterward and, OMFG, the resemblance was uncanny. 😵‍💫 I don't know how people don't see it because it's clear as day to me.
Now, I don't think Joanne had any intention of giving that resemblance to the goblins nor do I think that whatever antisemitism she has is anywhere close to they who shall not be named, but it's clear to me that she has unconscious biases that need analysis. However knowing her, she'll probably never admit those biases as she appears to have a distinct lack of humility 😁

Bad people can produce good art, the same way good people can produce bad art. Yes, the art might reflect some of their values as a product of its environment, but ultimately its still a product that can be enjoyed. The other solution is to totally ban everything which I don't agree with. Contextualising always helps, to consume a product in light of its influences.

@Chris Z This video didn't really delve into the range of philosophies implied by its title. I would say that boycotting Rowling is appropriate, but her franchise does not rate cancellation on the level of Louis CK. (Who should never get a comeback.) On the other hand, Dr. Seuss was not a bad person. It is good that his bad art has been removed from publication, (even though he is dead) yet it is absurd to me to suggest boycotting his other work. • @katietamura664
    @katietamura664 Před 2 lety +142

I personally feel that one should connect the art and the artist. These are for three main reasons. The first one is what Duncan mentioned about financially supporting the artist. We live in a capitalist system so there is power in voting with your dollar. Secondly, when creating any art, people are going to put their own thoughts about the world into it and many times these ideas are bigotry. I'm not saying when people write a story they are thinking "hmm I think women are inferior so I am going to make the women characters inferior as well", I am more saying that they may subconsciously put these prejudices throughout the plot, characters, and themes of the story. The final reason why the art and artist should be linked is that leaves more room for criticizing parts of a work while complimenting another. I personally love the book 1984 for its world-building and the way it makes me think about society, but I am not going to ignore that this book was written by an old white man so the woman character seems overly sexualized and two-dimensional. By saying you should separate the art and the artist means closing that door for that type of criticism which I find lacking in nuance

IMO the "separate art from artist" idea is applied way too broadly. To me, all it means is that the artist's moral character doesn't determine the value of the work. It has nothing to do with whether or not to support the art/artist, it's simply something to keep in mind when analyzing a piece of media. Not to mention that there's value in analyzing media with the artist in mind [for instance: transphobic themes in Harry Potter that relate to her real-world bigotry].

  • @scoutlaceharding

I'm horrified by JK Rowling. I don't want to put more money in her pockets. These new additions to the Potter universe seem....well, also fairly horrifying. But I have the original books. I occasionally re-read the original books. They are not perfect or unproblematic but they are something significant from my childhood that are still nostalgic for me. I don't know if it makes me a worse person, but the books aren't ruined for me. I won't be buying new things or consuming new content. I won't be telling people to read the books or putting a dime in Rowling's pocket. But I'll probably continue to reread the books and I honestly don't see how that could harm anyone. I respect and understand those who feel that it's all been tainted and ruined, though.
Also. I'm kind of a theme park nerd and remember learning about Rowling's input/demands in regard to the park design back around the first section's opening in Orlando. I was, frankly, disgusted by it at the time. Theme parks are not designed in a slapdash manner. Every aspect is carefully engineered (not just rides, but the queues, the walkways, the shops) to be both safe and efficient. You are moving a massive number of people through these spaces every day of the year (in the case of Universal, anyway) and when you have crowds that large, safety becomes a real issue if they aren't consciously managed. The arrogance of someone with no knowledge, education, or expertise in this area demanding a theme park be an inch-by-inch recreation of movie sets is staggering to me.
But it's more than annoying, it has a genuine negative impact on people. It would be one thing if it just meant you were only forcing people to wait in hours long lines (in the Florida sun) to be able to buy a wand. That's bad enough. But the way those designs limit accessibility for guests in wheelchairs or with other motion-assistance devices is really horrible, particularly considering how many Make-a-Wish kids wish to visit Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. To me, it's just another way that Rowling refuses to look past her own privileged perspective.
And the thing is, the result isn't even what I'm sure Rowling was hoping for. Instead of having buildings that cleverly manage crowds to enhance immersion, those parts of the Universal Parks often feel much more like a theme park because of the HORDES of people spilling out everywhere. It breaks the illusion more than it enhances it.
