The inseparables by Simone De Beauvoir is a gorgeous book on an obsessive female friendship that borders on sapphic love which takes place during the summer heat

I read we were liars when I was 14 too, and it definitely made me fall in love with reading again. I sobbed for probably an hour at the end
I was desperate for a Dakota upload and then I refreshed and there you were ❤
Dude you legit manifested her into your CZcams feed! That’s powerful!
no other youtuber shares my taste like you dakota omg 😭😭😭 there's never a recommendation from you that i don't like or didn't intend to read it already it's crazy
I’m so glad you mentioned We Were Liars! Even though most people dislike it, I love it sm💓
i’m in love with ur hair lenght rn!!
it’s videos like these that made me fall head over heals in love with reading when i first started watching your videos a few years ago. thank you
always my go-to for book recs, thank you
i knew you'd say we were liars the second you said it was controversial. when you mentioned it in your first ever video it was the book that made me know I can trust your taste, it's still one of my all time favourites, it changed my life and opened up a whole new writing style to me! love love love
okay i reaallly enjoyed we were liars…it was just so full of privilege and horrendous people lol which were just fascinating in a weird and maybe macabre way?? AND YES THE DOGS MADE ME SOB. i can understand why people didn’t like it but i thought it was soo fun and interesting
You have great recommendations. We all look forward to see what else you have in store.
loved the book recs per usual, also the beethoven piece playing in the background. i’m currently playing it with my sister and it’s a lot of fun xx
thank you for this video! i really needed it. you’re truly such a beautiful soul and you radiate comfort 🫶
I just read Call Me By Your Name and We Were Liars, actually! (we were liars was because you mentioned it, yes I cried) I read them on holiday along with Mythos by Stephen Fry which was a Greek mythology retelling, and obviously I brought my copy of On Sun Swallowing! I'm home now, and I've just read Carmilla because you mention it so often, and I loved living in that little world for a while, and now I'm onto Frankenstein :) Now I've watched this I definitely want to read Mrs. S and The Girls and Blue Horses this summer..
thank you for reawakening my love of reading, I needed it
lots of love
I recently read Bonjour tristesse due to your recommendation and fell in love with it
omg i read we were liars as a teenager too and i LOVED it too lmao, i feel like people hate on it because they weren't the target audience and already knew about the plot twist
I truly could listen to Dakota praysing books for hours. ❤
Definitely adding the Sleep Watcher to my list!
SO EXCITED!! ❤
✨Based on this, I think we have quite different taste in books, but I COMPLETELY AGREE with you about We We’re Liars ✨ I was shocked with the ending and it really made me think deeply about attachment to stuff when Cadence gives away her belongings. And man, the dogs 😢😭
i was just watching ur old vlogs because i'm missing u and suddenly u dropped this.... oh my god
Exactly the reading list I needed for this summer! Will definitely be reading
I just finished Family of Liars in July. I couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait to read We Were Liars this month!
i recently got okay days i'm hoping to read it soon but it sounds so good! a horse at night is amazing and bonjour tristesse is MUST read for the summertime
if you haven't read it i recommend reading august blue by deborah levy, i just finished it and reviewed it and overall it was really good :)
Thank you, Dakota. I needed that.
Love your book recommendations Dakota ❤
every time you upload i feel like having a party, i love ur channel
i love the girls and bonjour tristesse !!!! such good summer reads
I met Jenny Mustard at her waterstones! She's lovely and Okay Days is a great book❤ much love!
My all time favourite summer read by a French author is Le Blé en Herbe by Colette. It’s a short and bittersweet coming of age/love story set in Bretagne.
I read bonjour tristesse at the ile-de-re in France after seeing it in this video. I loved it. And it was true that you are transported there and the best bit was when I looked up and realised I WAS there. It was a brilliant book and the vibes were immaculate. Thank you xx
wake up babe, a new dakota video has dropped
Dakota i was wondering if you would do a outfits video like you had done in the past ! I loved watching it
babe wake up dakota posted ❤️❤️
few summers ago I read a book by Saverio Strati and every summer since when I get heat-induced migraines I remember reading about madness and ingenuity and the human condition
What book would you suggest after a breakup? Like the breakup has put me in a book slump cos I used to enjoy reading and sharing with someone else ❤
Call me by my name sounds epic romance and can’t wait to read it 😊
I'm almost done with "the girls" which I picked up because of this video. I love it, I can't believe how many people don't like that book on Goodreads!
I missed you!💗
Hey, Dakota! I also love Susan Sontag, Mary Oliver and Elena Ferrante! 🤎
Greetings from Brazil!
Hope you write more books you are amazing author 😊
i finally finished call me by your name a few weeks ago and i LOVED IT i saw so much of myself in elio it changed my life it’s so beautifully written oh my god i was devastated by the last paragraph i stayed up till 6 AM to finish it i literally saw the sunrise and i was SOBBING on my bed i couldn’t fall asleep after. it took me a year to read i won’t lie i started it last august and stopped half way through but i’m a mood reader so i do what ever feels right to me then i picked it back up in early july and holy shit. THE BEST summer novel ever. i haven’t stopped thinking abt it since. way better than the movie
The girls sounds and fun and love that definitely going to read it ❤
I also love Elena Ferrante and Susan Sontag! 🤎
I always love the recommendations, but this time I'm also dying to know where your top is from!
What I did notice in the girls was how many times the author used to describe “fat/chubby” characters and paint them as losers/awkward people or showed them in a bad light. Idk if it should’ve portrayed the way teenage girls think or if the author is kinda fatphobic🤷
Thank you for pointing this out! I'm waiting for my copy to arrive, so it's nice to have a heads-up. I'd like to think the author isn't fatphobic but in this society it almost feels like asking too much
you're welcome!! and indeed :/
I still have yet to read bonjour tristesse but I haven’t read any books since my breakup and I hate that cos I love books
i also read we were liars at 14 and it changed my summer
Dakota, you look well!
mrs. s is one of my new favourite books !

Was kinda waiting for Eve Babitz to be recommended at some point, but you didn't so I will do it for you. She's perfect for summer
please talk about your love life, I would listen to you narate your phone book
I would highly recommend La Bâtarde by Violette Leduc! A relatively lesser known author, it seems, at least among English speakers.. though she was friend and mentee of Simone de Beauvoir and entrenched in the French literary scene of the time. La Bâtarde is her autiobiography, an extremely intimate self-portrait, and it is absolutely dazzling. She carries the shame of having been born out of wedlock-a 'bastard'-as well as being conventionally unattractive. Her portrayal of girlhood is raw and unyielding, and we see her relationships with both men and women. She has such a unique voice.. her prose electrifies. Here is a small excerpt:
"Oh God how I longed for a change, oh God how I longed to love Hermine more than myself, oh God how I was beginning to love her, oh God how I longed for a kind of saintliness within our reach: an everyday and never-ending smile."
So much amazing writing in La Bâtarde but I would also like to highlight the first paragraph specifically it is so.....:
"My case is not unique: I am afraid of dying and distressed at being in this world. I haven't worked, I haven't studied. I have wept, I have cried out in protest. These tears and cries have taken up a great deal of my time. I am tortured by all that time lost whenever I think about it. I cannot think about things for long, but I can find pleasure in a withered lettuce leaf offering me nothing but regrets to chew over. There is no sustenance in the past. I shall depart as I arrived. Intact, loaded down with the defects that have tormented me. I wish I had been born a statue; I am a slug under my dunghill. Virtues, good qualities, courage, meditation, culture. With arms crossed on my breast I have broken myself against those words."
Someone tell me if the dogs are harmed in we were liars cause if yes i aint reading that shit
Book recommendation for you! "I who have never known men" by Jacqueline Harpman♡♡
Mrs S destroyed me.
urghh Dakota you are so incredibly beautiful
Sorry who hates we were liars? Let's have a conversation lmao
Do you also face up and down
Your recommendations are very interesting and I love the quite music in the background. 💕📚🎻🥰 But I don’t get why so many people like call me by your name; I found it so boring. 👀🥱
Ha- I take the covers off for the opposite reason- I love them and will destroy them if I leave them on while reading . Blahdiggityblah, appreciate the video 📖🪱💚
You have some of THE best book recommendations! I love how you introduce me to books I‘ve never heard of before and they always end up being incredible. 🫶🏻
