I’ve had this idea for a while (but mentioning it now prompted by this video) to somehow create a platform with prompts and a curation of submitted art of various mediums (not just written!) to help provide a space for exposure and leverage for young/underground artists and also just a safe space to consume art from others, but this is a baby idea, and I need to brainstorm a hell of a lot more regarding platform, logistics, potential for print editions, etc. If you have ANY advice, feel free to reply? Dakota x
i LOVE that idea!
love that idea as a young author
I tried something like this with my publishing house and website, Long Shot Books. With the opportunities on the internet, there are a few ways to go about it in a relatively easy/cost efficient way, depending on how you choose to go about doing so. For my own writing and creative projects, I just use public Google docs anymore but that isn't nearly as fashionable presentation. Personally, I think a website like your own but with the content native to the site would be the most efficient approach.
Oh yes!
this is an insanely creative & innovative idea & I’m absolutely intrigued. I think I’ve possibly got a few ideas I could list off that may be of value!
• Creating an app of some sort that could host this amazing type of space & content with areas of submission, communications… absolutely anything your going for, I feel like there would be some lovely tech savvy entrepreneur that would love to help you with something like this!
• Have a place on your website (or even a new website) for people to submit their art/media & have them published into newsletter or magazine form each month or so… (this could be downloaded or made into physical copies & either free or sold, either which way)
• Maybe hosting mini art showcases or pop up galleries? Whether that be in person or done online/virtually!
• Art trading & swapping is something fun & interesting that also comes to mind, this could perhaps be an additional feature you could add to a platform but still an idea nonetheless!
Woww I’m so in love with this idea, I cannot wait to see where this fruitful journey may lead! A safe platform for young/ underground artists to use & grow with, hosted by the one & only Dakota Warren, now this sounds like an absolute dream & we are all here for it. ❤🥂
I love it so much ❤❤
living for her active era
Hello Dakota, as a 15yo boy i may not be part of your main demographic, but its really nice to feel part of a community with similar passions for poetry and literature (barely anyone in my school could give a single care about books anymore). Though i'm not a very confident nor popular person this video has given me courage to start getting my work out there (even if its just on an instagram account for now). Thank you for being an inspiration.
- a young aspiring writer with big hopes (and now thanks to you a liitle courage also)
I believe in you😤 keep it up
what's your Instagram account? i'd love to check it out.
You've got this!!! dont let anyone stop you from writing
Sending you sooooo much support! You got this!!!!
Could you share your insta please? I’m also a poet and an artist seeking my audience and success in this field. I feel like I’m in a very similar position to yours right now. Non of my friends from my school are interested in art of any form, and that makes me extremely sad. Creating a helpful network of other creatives is extremely important to stay in this field long term.
In the middle of this video is a clip of me in Dublin, drunkenly infodumping on Dakota about the under-appreciated beauty of physics. I was so lost in the sauce (the sauce being red wine and the kind of borderline-religious fervour that consumes the average mad scientist) that I had no idea I was being filmed. Thanks for immortalising my little rant, I had such a magical night (though we won't talk about my hangover the next day)
Could you timestamp??

I told my english teacher about you when we talked about Australian upcoming authors. Maybe one day I'll be the next Australian girl poet reading my poems out to a crowd like you
keep writing and one day u will
You can do it!!!
DO IT!!!!
I feel so disparaged
I am a 50 year old father of two daughters, an avid reader, a writer myself and just an all around art nerd. I found this video incredibly inspiring! In my late twenties I sold a screenplay and I assumed fame (didn't really care about that) and fortune (really wanted this, for freedom) were just around the corner. And then... it just never happened. I walked away from my creative passions to build my family and my career. I don't regret it, not at all, but I've recently come back to my first love and feel invigorated. I published a novel in 2020 and wrote a screenplay which was eventually made into a short film that has won several international awards. The reason I mention all of this is because in this video you say something about "if you're 40, whatever, write that book!" (pardon my poor paraphrase), but that is EXACTLY what I want people to take away form this video--as yet created art doesn't expire until YOU do! Life gets in the way--all the fucking time--so live it and then come back to the page (or the canvas, the studio, the kiln, the celluloid...) with no shame. We all have to deal, and that responsibility can inform and shape your voice and your output. Listen to it. Thank you for this video, I think it is vital.
hey dakota, you probably don't care but I'm a 15 year old girl who's finalizing the last draft of her debut novel. I've been both watching you on youtube/tiktok and writing my coming of age book since I was 13 and you have no idea how much of my writing has been shaped by your beautiful, haunting poetry. I used to think i would never write poetry because it was so 'old' and 'boring' but when 13 year old me came across your instagram something in my brain changed, and I was officially in love with you and your writing style. i got your book way back last year and forced my best friend to read it (who also claimed that poetry was 'boring') and now i haven't seeen this book in months because she's keeping it at her house😭 i come back to it every few months, memorising the words and going over my favourite lines. i guess my novel is a lot like your poem 'girlhood', to put it simply. this sounds so awful and cliche but you have given me a lot of inspiration to pursue my writing, and i owe it to you that i finally have my own writing style. thank you for this video
Oh my god I'm 15 too and that's so impressive I would love to read your novel one day
This is so sweet. I wish you soo much sucess :))
good luck!!! i hope i get to read your novel one day!!
she's actually such an inspiration
would love a history channel by dakota. i feel like she would teach history so well and cinematically
Makes me happy that you shouted out 40 year olds. Never to late to do what you want in life
I think I might post one of my poems on tumblr now, thank you for giving me the courage
I've recently completed an internship with a literary agency in America, and I have found - at least with my particular agency - that following the format requested by the agent is soo important. If pitches are sent by email, for example, and something as small as the subject line is not formatted correctly, your pitch may not even be considered. Whether fair or not - I don't know - but it is an easy way of narrowing down the many, many pitches that an agent must sift through.
I know this sounds daunting, but normally guidelines are pretty straightforward; you just need to take the time to read over them. Your chances improve IMMENSELY if you give the agent the format they want.
I love Dakotas vibe. Always super welcoming yet kinda drenched with articulation
This video was beautiful, and rekindled in me a hope that I could be a writer. I’m 22 myself and a student, but I’ve realised that I’ve been burying my love of writing. For a long time, I’d kinda shut down the idea as silly and frivolous, everyone telling me that being a writer isn’t a sensible career path and that I should do it as a side thing to a real job, and I really took that in. I’m studying business, not for love of it but because it seemed sensible, practical and respectable. But after listening to your story, I really just sat down and thought about how I got here and why I’m doing this. I want to be like you, creating and sharing with people, performing and truly being myself, not just some stuffed suit spitting out business theory on demand. Your story made me realise that I actually can, it’s something I could genuinely pursue and not just another dream to bury in the garden. Thank you so much! ❤ Even if it doesn’t work out, I’ll be happy in knowing I tried.
Things you said in the video deeply resonated with me, I’ve written poems, dark ones, since around first grade. I wanted to start writing for someone other than myself, and begin to publish as a teenager to help my application to college one day soon. This video inspired me very much to pursue my dreams, thank you very much. Like Virginia Woolf, Priscilla Presley, Sylvia Plath and others i can just tell you are one of those women whose presence will demand admiration universally and eternally. Thank you for all the content you push out!!!
i just sort of realized, based on the things you had to say, and especially watching the montages of you at the book readings and signings, that in order to be a writer who has their work seen by anyone at all one must be a HUNGRY person. hungry for recognition, for attention, etc. the longing to split oneself open in the operating theater of the public eye. it is not a bad thing to be hungry. it is not necessarily good either. but i can tell you it makes life a hell of a lot more interesting.
its not a pretty thing to admit, especially being someone perceived as female by most, and it can render one off-putting to many (in my situation, where writing is not and will never be my career, its hard for people to understand why i do this, why i continually prostrate myself before publishers and watch rejections roll in time after time, why i dedicate most of my free time to writing even when it sucks). i recognized this feeling in myself, was able to put it to words, while watching this video. so thank you. and best wishes to all the hungry people in the comments, i hope you are fed soon
manifesting this for meee
i like your username :)
@@y0landa543 Thank you! :)
also, i'm 25 and i really appreciate the bit you mentioned about starting at any age -- i am so inspired by young writers and i don't feel like i'm too late/running behind 💞
Are you saying 25 is old? What?

I remember finding your tiktoks in 2021 and absolutely falling in love with you. I was in year 12 and you reignited my passion for literature and writing and I chose to peruse it at uni. I remember preordering ur book on Christmas Day and being so excited when it arrived. Truly you have been such a catalyst for my art and I’m so appreciative of you 🫶🏻
you inspire me so much Dakota! Thank you for this video :)

and a massive yes please to the tips on writers/creative block!
I’ve been following you for a few years now, when I first started uni and I’m in my final year now, and I’m so proud of you. You’re a beacon of light and so inspirational. I took a module for creative writing because of you and it’s been so scary yet so rewarding. Thank you
omg i was literally just wondering yesterday how you achieved your goal!! can't wait to find a copy of your book you really inspire me
i need more 45min Dakota Warren vlogs tbh
i was waiting for this video since you posted about it on your stories!
This was awesome! I have been writing my first book since 2020, but have not had yet the courage to share any of my work with others. It really helps to know that you found an audience and a nice little corner on the internet. I am very much afraid of hate and of being a total flop, and you inspired me to get over that
This was genuinely helpful, thank you!
I love you Dakota!! As an emerging visual artist in Australia this was wonderfully insightful and such a generous history of your career and passions. Everyone take a sip of your red wine every time Dakota says, 'transparency is sexy' (because it is!!!!) xoxo
You are so inspiring! 💫❤️
Your journey is so inspiring ✨️
11:04 , pausing this to say that i'm about to cry because our stories are so similar its as if you're saying my thoughts.. this video is the motivation I need to detach myself from my work and let it breathe out there without just me
Please write more books Dakota and I loved ur first book ❤
love you Dakota!
thank you so much for this video. i always thought i needed a huge following to get my start, but i'm just going to start showing up and seeing how things go while i publish my short videos and poems. ♥️ 21:41
You are most gifted and talented I love your poetry and art ❤
thank you for answering my question!
the actual excitement I got when I realised the video was 45 whole minutes 😍
45 minutes? you’ve blessed us.
I need a video about technics!!! I aspire to be a filmmaker but creativity is such a coming and leaving thing, so I need to regulate myself how to be creative and not burn out
Thank you for this video. You are an inspiration.
Thankyouuuu!!! I wanna publish a poetry book one day
love your channel 💞💞
Loved this video and I'm ecstatic to see a fellow poet doing so well. I noticed your poetry book is currently sold out to the rest of the world outside of Australia. Any news on when it will be restocked and will you be doing any further signed copies?
Greeting from Mexico! I love your videos!
Thank you - so inspirational!
thank you Dakota x
a video on techniques on creative burn out would cure my soul
I really love your videos
oh my god i needed this
loved this
Dakota your so inspiring
Can you make a video on your techniques to combat burnout? I’m sure we’d all love to hear that.
this is so helpful, thanks:))
I've been writing poems for over 2 years. There's times where i write everyday for a whole week 2 to 3 poems ,and theres times i write 2 or 4 on just 3 days of the week.
And ive been thinking recently, and i would love to publish a poetry book or a series of poetry books, that would mean a lot.
Ive looking for this video as i want some advice in publishing, im also going to start more poems like Sylvia plath and Emily Dickinson
Bro im not a girl but related a lot
This video was great! Thank you so much :) Oh, also, is On Sun Swallowing gonna be restocked anytime soon?
❤ I'd love to know how you let go of ideas or change up an orginal idea/plan. I've always struggled with this but have lost content from my writing and also my art before and picking up those writing ideas again but with holes in has stopped me from being able to complete them as I cannot let go of the fact it won't be exactly how I obsessively lovingly invisioned and mapped it on paper now lost! ❤
Waiting to grow up and meet u and then chaotically discuss literature with you ily
i am in love
Have you ever read Witold Gombrowicz, Bruno Schulz or Witkacy? I highly recommend these authors ☺
Is there anyway we can see these videos of you reading out your poems on tour? (Also the Q&As after, I sadly couldnt see you but I love your book and have read it twice) Edit: I'm so excited for your book and future poems!
I can DM u :)

do you have any recommendations on literary magazines or competitions to submit to? especially for poetry, but short stories as well
I truly believe dakota and i could be best friends

This was absolutely helpful, but I have a question that has bugged me for a long, long time now: Is it possible to reach out to foreign publishers instead of the ones from one's city? If anyone has the answer to this, please enlighten me xx
Yes absolutely - a lot of things can be done remotely. Irish writers or writers from other European countries can be published in the UK and vice versa, for example - there’s nothing stopping you reaching out to publishers or agents who work in the genre/age group you’re writing for!
God why I am crying?
"That's such a funny hate comment because, thank you for calling me pretty!" - I love this 😝❤️
pretty cool
how young is too young to start thinking about submitting poetry (basically would you say 13 is too young to think about publishing🥺)
NO im 15 and writing the last draft of my novel that let's hope will get published soon!! so it's probably not too early, i was thinking abt this shit when i was 13 too
@@sashaz6109 okok!! ty for the inspiration
If you, as a 13 y/o, could compile a children's book of poetry and market it as "for a child, by a child" not only would it be iconic but I bet it will go so well with the public. There will be lots of parents eager to support young talent. If you've got a knack for rhyming poetry and an imaginative mind I encourage you to start with work geared towards a child, while You're young enough yourself to understand childrens' likes and use that opportunity to practice your poetry and writing skill. And then years down the line at 15/16/17 you can publish a more thorough poetry collection aimed at teens, having more tangible life experiences to allow you better self express. After all, to make more meaningful poetry you need to be a bit older - if you're seeking to make more serious poetry. In the meanwhile just practice your work and collect the poems you've got.
If you're gonna go ahead and make a children's book - poetry or not - I highly encourage using that tagline by a child, for a child and put it in a sticker somewhere on the front cover - what this is gonna do is make your work standout in a sea children's books written by adults.
