I read 15 books this year, which passed my goal of 10! Slow readers unite :) It's also the most I've read in years, grad school really did a number on my reading-for-pleasure habit haha.
One Hundred Years of Solitude was by favourite read by far, but honourable mention to The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas, which I picked up because of this channel :)

1984 is so good that if I was on a plane with my parents that was about to crash and there were only three parachutes on board, I would give the first parachute to me, the second to my copy of 1984 and the third one to 1984 as a backup in case its other parachute failed. I'd probably be devastated later when I'd realise books can't use parachutes but I'm not good under pressure to be honest.

i read 29 books in 2023 which is a pretty big feat for me since i’m dyslexic.
my favorite book was definitely “sula” by toni morrison, i highlighted and underlined almost every line [“..she wanted to be in a very small, very bright place. small enough to contain her grief. bright enough to throw into relief the dark things that cluttered her.”] i think that female friendships teeter between unconditional love and obliteration, the main characters, sula and nel, survive through each other.
the second one is “in the dream house” by carmen maria machado which is a queer memoir told in fragmented metaphors of houses/homes. it is gorgeous and heartbreaking, it reads like poetry and the pages might as well turn themselves.
the third one is “slaughterhouse five” by kurt vonnegut, i rarely read classics but this is a book i think about almost every day. i think that the violence we drive into ourselves (especially after a traumatic event) goes unnoticed until it becomes bigger than us. this book explores that and it’s also quite whimsical, which breaks the tension of atmosphere.

I read the entirety of The Raven Cycle in 2023 and I don’t think I’ve ever loved a series as much as I love this one. The atmosphere, the relationships, the storyline but especially the characters are so incredibly well developed and written and I just love it all so much

When I've heard you saying 'The Catcher in the Rye", my eyes filled momentarily with tears. After reading this book I've purchased my first and the only bookish t-shirt and I wear it now when I'm listening to you. Luckily, I don't burst in tears by just looking at my t-shirst beacuse this book really got me. This book and Normal People by Sally Rooney are the most powerful tearjerkers I've ever read.

@@aIparica, these last two years I've read 1,500 pages to 2,000 pages per month except for December I peter out at the end for some reason, but can't really complain. In 2022 I read 52 books in 52 weeks and in 2023 I read 73 books, but that December of 2022 I must have cleared my head and came up with some ideas and in 2023 14 books that I read fell in the top 40 books of all time and so over one third of my favorite books were read last year.
It isn't how many books you read so much as what you read and what you got out of it.
Follow authors, genre, people who you trust who recommend books to you, and make a list of your favorite books to help guide you. I ended 2021 with finally making a top 100 favorite books of all time and it seemed to help me focus on Russian for 2022 and then classics in 2023.
These are my top 14 books for the year 2023.
      1) “The Insulted and Humiliated” by Fyodor Dostoevsky
      2) “Vilette” by Charlotte Brontë

It makes me so unbelievably happy to hear you talk about Brothers Karamazov and especially about your love of Ivan. I absolutely adore him too, and I had a feeling you might when you and Carolyn first announced you’d be reading it haha. The first time I read that book, and especially when he first sits down alone with Alyosha and the two talk, my world absolutely changed. Like you say, reading Ivan is like being seen and being felt; it is unreal. Rereading that book along with the game of tomes bookclub this year, I got to relive that and it was incredible. Impacted me now more than ever, so thank you for that.
My favourite new book of the year was definitely Less Than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis. I’m not even sure why - i just feel in my bones that nothing caught me in its web so fully. Its sequel was good too, albeit more twisted and uncomfortable.

Great list Emma!! Agree so much with the classics on here, mostly because I haven’t read some of the others. Just a comment - to me, A Farewell to Arms was precisely about the war, a very strong statement on the futility and hopelessness of war and how it affects people, and the relationship between Henry and Catherine was just a metaphor for that. I think that’s why they don’t feel like deeply drawn characters. The starkness of his prose contributes to it’s power.

this was such a good list, Emma! there were a couple of my personal favourites, like 1984, but also a couple that I’m itching to read (hopefully this year), like Grendel and Dance Dance Dance. My top three from 2023 was After Dark by Haruki Murakami, Six Tragedies by Seneca (translated by Emily Wilson), and The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Loved this video Emma! I also read Catcher in the Rye, Farewell to Arms and the Brothers Karamazov, because of you and Carolyn. Thank you so much for recommending these books. Re 1984, you may want to read We Had to Remove This Post by Dutch writer Hanna Bervoets. There is overlap in some of the subject matter.

My absolute favourites of the year were legends & lattes, babel (!!!!!), perks of being a wallflower, the count of monte cristo (which I know you're reading for sure hehe), the dragon republic (2nd book in the poppy war trilogy) and the tenant of wildfell hall. If you only have to choose one, go with either babel or the tenant, they're both absolutely stunning. Thanks for another amazing video Emma 🥰

Just found your channel and WOW-each time you listed a new book, I’d think, “Okay good, I’m not interested in this one and we can skip it.” THEN you’d light up and describe it in a way that made me want to read it too (literally all of them!).
My favorite of 2023 was Acts of Desperation by Megan Nolan. Doesn’t fit with this list super well as far as I can tell, but I’d love to hear your thoughts if you end up reading it. Looking forward to more videos (& reading some of these!) ❤️

I always really enjoy your channel and videos despite quite literally having the polar opposite taste in books than you lol. Typically, if you like a book, I usually dislike it and vice versa. But I love your vibes and your calming voice. And, every once in a while, we both enjoy the same book. In this video, it’s The Raven Boys. The Raven Cycle is probably my favorite book series of all time and I’m so happy you enjoyed it!

i'm so happy you loved catcher in the rye! you must read salinger's other books (there are only three others, sadly). raise high the roof beam by salinger was one of my favourites of the year, along with middlemarch by george eliot and the dark interval by rilke. also, if you're interested in memory-i'd highly recommend swann's way by proust. i'm currently working through it and it's some of the most beautiful, immersive, dazzling prose i've ever read. i hope you have a wonderful year, full of wonderful books!

My two other favorite fiction books this year were The Hearing Trumpet by Leonora Carrington and Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson. Written on the Body is now an all time fave, just gorgeous ❤✨

Your notes on "The Hotel" and how you can differently occupy the space made me think of the Hotel Mille-Collines in Rwanda. You might enjoy "A Sunday at the Pool in Kigali"
Also, I've been really into books that explore characters who are afraid of being perceived after reading "The Bee Sting" by Paul Murray (fave book of 2023, maybe fave book released in the past decade) so when you mentioned that as a character note from "Good Morning Midnight", I was instantly excited. My other best books of 2023 were "The Remains of the Day" and "the Magic Toyshop"

I read 109 books this year, my biggest goal reached ever! Many of them I found through watching this channel, too. My favorite book of the year though is one my dad recommended, Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follett. It's about a Cathedral being built in the 1100s, but it follows all kinds of different people and the various struggles politically and between the different classes at the time. It was just so captivating and kept me needing to know what happened next

@@sup3rcut you don’t really have to read the first two but you definitely should read wild sheep chase before dance dance dance. I would recommend the first two but not as your first murakami so I’d say start with a wild sheep chase

    • @Ninaofthe90s

@@sup3rcutI mean you could... But I wouldn't recommend it. Because we follow the same character in all 4 storys.Hear the wind sing/Pinball is a very short book. And A wild sheep chase is necessary for the story - and it's also really amazing!!!

Three of the books here I read a long, long time ago. They've stayed with me over the years, over the decades, over the loves lost and the lives passed by. I cannot shake the vision of Holden watching his sister, Phoebe, go around and around on that goddamn carousel. I sometimes awake from the nightmare of Hemingway's description of the Italian retreat, where they started to shoot their own men. Or confuse my own two brothers with Alyosha and Dmitri. Your insights in these three books reawakened all those old wounds and moments of bliss. You speak about Salinger, Hemingway, and Dostoyevsky with the passion of a reader who knows what lies in a writer's soul. And many lives from now, when you feel the weight of years, you'll see how your witness to these words shaped the person you become.

Thank you so much for highlighting Dance Dance Dance for me, Murakami is my favourite author and coming back to reading after a long time i'm a little scared to go back. Particularly The Wind up Bird Chronicle where i've no doubt changed around it. I'm sure i didn't read (Dance) back then and considering my life now and your description, I think it could be perfect for me to read right now.
