It still is. Metal acts still carry the torch in terms of craftsmanship and technique. People will argue that it's just noise and slamming on your instrument yet none of there detractors can play their material. Funny huh?

Today's Artists (I use that term loosely because I only consider a few of the musicians today I even consider them) don't have the same intensity and passion as they did back in the late 60s through the 80s. I mean people like Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, Jim Morrison, Bonn Scott, Eddie Vedder, David Bowie, David Lee Roth, Ozzy and of course Mr. Freddie Mercury produced a certain kind of Energy that is simply non existent today. These men and their band members are gods, forever will be an we will never see something like them ever again.
