  • How to install a swirl flap delete kit on a BMW M57 diesel. This particular car I am working with here today is a 2010 BMW 335d. This involves removing the swirl flaps and installing custom blocker plates. As a warning, this is an off-road modification and it is not approved for vehicles licensed to be driven on the road. The reason for installing this kit is to remove a common reliability issue where the swirl flaps can break and then end up in the engine potentially causing severe damage. #bmwm57 #bmw335d #turnermotorsport

    Tools/Supplies Needed:
    -8mm, 10mm, 11mm, 13mm sockets with ratchet
    -e14, e18 sockets
    -5mm allen wrench
    -degrease
    -clean rags
    -side cutters
    -long magnet
    -new gaskets
    -swirl flap delete kit
    -silicone spray
    -small screwdriver or pick
    -t20 driver
    Procedure:
    Before we get started, it’s a good idea to disconnect the battery. This requires a 10mm socket, which I have already done. Remove the 6 8mm screws holding down the cabin filter cover.
    Then lift off the cabin filter cover. Unclip the sensor for the hood. Pull out the side tabs and remove the outer covers by the hood shocks.
    Remove the 2 8 mm screws on each side of the windshield cowl. There will be one on each side.
    If you haven’t already, unclipped the wire that goes across the engine bay under that plastic trim piece above the engine cover.
    Lift that plastic cover and then pull towards the front of the car. There will be a wire clip that also needs to be disconnected to fully remove this cover.
    Before getting any further, it’s always a good idea to vacuum up any debris which can potentially fall inside the engine. Using an e14 socket, remove the two bolts on each of the strut towers for the strut brace.
    Remove the plastic cover at the center of the windshield cowl, then loosen the e18 bolt here. There is no need to remove it as the strut braces as they have a slotted hole where they slide in under the bolt head.
    Then remove the strut braces for each side. Make note of their orientation as they only fit in one position.
    Remove the 13mm nut for the power wire that goes across the engine bay. As mentioned earlier, you should have disconnected the battery so there is no chance of a short here.
    Remove the 7 5mm socket head bolts using a 3/8 drive ratchet. This engine cover comes out in two pieces, I will show you that in a moment.
    Once those fasteners are out, wipe around the oil fill location, then remove the filler cap.
    Lift out the first part of the engine cover. Reinstall that oil fill cap.
    Remove the 3 10mm bolts holding on the center section plastic trim panel on the firewall. There are two styles of fasteners here, make sure you note their location.
    If you haven’t already, pull out that rubber gasket. Then lift out the cover, you may need to pull up on the windshield cowl to help with movement.
    Now remove the back section of the engine cover. This is a tight fit and will require some patience when removing. Make sure you don’t damage the sound insulation.
    Remove the 2 10mm bolts towards the back corner of the intake on the driver's side. There will be one for the engine oil dipstick bracket and another for a bracket on the rear.
    Disconnect the electrical plug for the MAP sensor. Simply press the tag and pull it off.
    Disconnect the electrical connector on the rear behind the intake. And then disconnect another below the MAP sensor. Using cutters, remove the cable tie holding on the one wiring harness. Using a standard screwdriver, gently pry off the electrical connector for the butterfly flap motor.
    Disconnect the wiring harness from the bracket. Disconnect the electrical connector on top of this assembly along with removing the harness from the wiring retaining clip.

      @@4DIYers that’s good brother & me too, tbh best cars for Milage & MPG, other then that nice body design, so whenever the Milage is through the roof ima just engine swap it because of how good it looks good

      Agreed! The only thing I wish is that mine was a touring. Not even sure if that option was available in Canada with the M57. Could always import one I suppose.

    Silly question but would it be possible to just disable the actuator until acquiring a delete kit?
    We just bought an M57 E53 X5 and this will probably be the first thing I do to it. Love your work this is a very good and comprehensive video!

      Thank you so much! Yes, you can simply unclip the actuator arm and it won't cause any issues.

      Thank you! Performance tuning companies should be able to disable your swirl flaps.

    One question. Because I wanna buy an E60 manual 530d probably 2007 or after that year with M57 engine. Does this engine have these swirl flaps and if so, isn't there any part that fixes this problem without changing the way that it was designed by the engineers? Does removing them affect the engine reliability?

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  Před 7 měsíci

      I believe the 07 also has these. But you’ll have to double check as we never had that year of diesel in Canada. Engineers don’t always do everything right. Apparently this does make the engine slightly louder, however I haven’t noticed any change.

      There is actually - by buying a new intake manifold. But if you want to keep everything the way it was designed by engineers, DO NOT buy an old diesel. Dpf's, egrs, swirl flaps and similar. All of them kill the engine but are necessary for emissions. And they are very expensive to fix/replace, (dpf would cost more than the car you want to buy) not to mention possible damage to turbos and engine when they go bad.

    Did you reconnect the swirl flap controller or leave it unplugged.
    I did a swirl flap delete on an e83 x3 3.0d and plugged the controller in, at idle it made a loud knocking noise as the motor tried moving back and forth. I then unplugged it and got a fault code. Wondering what you did?

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  Před rokem +1

      Nope, that is still in place, however I did also remove the large push rod. No issues at all.

    • @danielbirin2461
      @danielbirin2461 Před rokem

      @4DIYers Okay, thanks for the reply. I removed the swirl flaps and plugged them with a delete kit and also removed the long rod. Put the controller back,on the manifold and plugged it it. At idle it makes a loud knocking sound as the motor seems to go crazy trying to adjust the swirl flaps that are now missing. I've unplugged it but get a MIL light on the dash as a result.

      Have you also disconnected the battery for a computer reset?

  • @Bradley950
    @Bradley950 Před 6 měsíci +1

    Why add the actuator motor back on? Can I just leave it off?

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  Před 6 měsíci +1

      So it wouldn't kick on a fault code. I think once a tune is done, the actuator can be permanently removed.

      Do you have any codes? I just had this issues after replacing my harmonic balancer. Made it 10 minutes up the road and my car stalled. My crank sensor failed. Do you have any rpm when the engine is turning over?

      No I didn't. The company I ordered from, while they did make a good quality part, I wasn't impressed with their customer service after other stuff I ordered came damaged and it was a problem getting it resolved.

    Also will you be doing a EGR delete video in the future? Any other future performance modifications? Your video's are so well done I would like to see more on the 335d, I follow along with mine. @m3_killer_

      Maybe, haven't decided yet. I do have the parts, but there's a lot of problems with EPA cracking down on people doing certain tutorials. Also planning on doing an aftermarket downpipe. Thank you, I really appreciate the feedback! Really love this car so I don't plan on selling it.
