    This is really, really cool. Shame it's so expensive, more of a fancy novelty if anything but still unique and functional. The presentation was concise and engaging and Gabe is an amazing presenter! It's amazing to see that Solari boards are still alive and kicking in the 21st century, with a streamlined modern twist to bring the product into the present day. Truly the best of both eras!

    • @CZghost
      @CZghost Před 3 lety +1

      I thought it is controlled by the Android app. That doesn't make much of sense to be bricked. The only thing that would happen is the app will be removed from Apple App Store or Google Play Store, but that doesn't necesarily mean that your installation will be automatically removed from your phone. If it does in fact rely on servers, which will eventually go down, then I guess it's not worth of the money. In eighter case, it does depend on your home network, so if you have network outage, then you cannot naturally control the board. If you have power outage, the board is supplied with power from a power outlet cord, so your Wi-Fi going down doesn't really matter that much in this case anyway.

    4:10 not sure about your privacy policy, but this sounds a bit sketch as far as data collection.
    Also, if this is cloud based then this product will never take off, as all cloud reliant products do. Your company going under turns everyone’s devices into bricks if this is the case. This should be controlled locally.
    Really cool product, but that is a HUGE issue.

      Actually, you should just be able to replace the guts of it with a Raspberry Pi and a new program to operate it! You can monitor the control lines using an oscilloscope and reverse engineer the control codes for the flips.

    • @jeroenrnl
      @jeroenrnl Před 3 lety +1

      @@PWingert1966 actually, companies should be obliged to offer local operation and publish their protocols so reverse engineering shouldn't be necessary and you can actually own the device you paid a lot of money for.

      @@PWingert1966 Too overthinked. This is an old technology, essentially split-flap display, that have been around for DECADES! Yes, you heard me right. This is 50yo piece of technology! The only thing that is new is the Arduino or another PLC that drives it. If the company goes bankrupt and your board is nor bricked, it wouldn't be much expensive to simply buy an Arduino and make your own control logic, with your own app. Or Raspberry Pi with a Server Linux running on it, and control logic as an app on that. You don't know how to code? Well, you're not out of luck yet. Simply find someone who knows and is willing to make the firmware for you. Or, if you don't want to swap the guts, find someone who knows how to hack firmwares.

    So this is essentially split flap display hooked to an Android app. Those who know how to code stuff and know how to handle Arduino, they can build their split flap display on their own. For a tenth of price of Vestaboard. For the rest, there is an overpriced old technology display using some modern technology hook. You surely do know how to make money from relatively simple stuff :)

      Vestaboard is comprised of 132 character modules - each character module has its own housing, sensor, motor, and 64 beautifully printed flaps; as you can guess, the cost to produce a single module with those components is expensive and 132x any number starts to add up quickly. On top of that, Vestaboard is powered by one of the largest PCBs in consumer electronics with over 2,000 electronic components. Vestaboard is built inside an elegant aluminum encasement with a removable frame. With over 14,000 moving pieces (8,448) flaps, it's an intricate product to make and ensure it is built to last for many many years, which we believe we have done. We hope you have a chance to see it in action in person, as we do think people who see it appreciate it even more and better relate to the price!

    So, it's one of those things your boss buys for the office and is all excited about and you are left wondering why he doesn't instead raise all your wages by 50 bucks which would cost him the same in a year's time as that shitty board that could have been a TV screen with a chromecast on... or you know, a fucking whiteboard.
