BMW M30 Engine Intake Manifold Overview: Vacuum Hoses & Components - E32 735i & E34 535i

  • ** Update ** I made a mistake in the video: the bare bolt to hold the fuel rail goes to the very front of the engine. The brackets for the injector wiring go to the middle and to the back. Sorry!
    Ever wondered where all the vacuum hoses on the M30 intake manifold go? Wonder no more! In this video we'll take a look at the intake manifold and go over each component and vacuum hose.

    This was made back when BMW made true craftsmanship instead of making everything out of cheap Chinese plastic.
    Look at all that metal and engineering that went into that intake manifold. A shame they don't build them like that anymore.

    This video is absolute GOLD. When we speak of perfection, precision, clarity, application this video is a thing of beauty and a critical necessity to anyone trying to not only rebuild or clean the manifold and or injectors but it helps to find vacuum leaks. I just bought a 1988 BMW 735i that has sat for 16 years. I did not try and crank the car so I had no idea if the car would run I just gambled. Replaced fluids, plugs, fuel pump, fuel regulator went to crank it and it fired right up. Stoked.Then I noticed a horrible low idle in park until you hit the gas then up and down on the idle, then it smooths out. Put it in gear and it starts shaking and idle is erratic, lots of sputtering. Under the hood I can hear hissing. Been on this for weeks, found this video was able to trace the lines and found that the hose to the intake hose was halfway on and I pulled it off way too easily.. I am hoping this is my culprit. Maybe not, I don't know but atleast I am making progress now because I have been runninbg in place for way too long. You Sir, are a gift to mankind.

    It's such an unusual design...however watching Jay Leno's Garage the other week a very early Duesenberg (early 20th C.) there was an incredibly similar design with the main vertical plenum chamber and side runners. Amazing & very recommended to see perhaps early inspiration for BMW. F.Y.I. Alpina (and others) produced a version of this manifold putting the T.B. on the other side. I believe the injectors changed from the single pintle design with ribbing to a smooth "capped" design, both in yellow c.1989/90? Watch for the intake gaskets ever so slightly not quite matching the head ports: a fine file can take care of this. I see the cursed Cosmolene shipping coating there...if you find an easy way to melt this away sympathetically my first born is in the post lol! Really like the easy going and specific video mate, you have excellent standards & all your parts are impressively clean. :)

      Thanks for the kind words Aussie BMW :) I just happened to clean the intake manifold before reinstallation, it wasn't that clean before! I couldn't get the cosmoline off with regular degreaser but I didn't try too hard. I didn't want to damage the finish on the good-looking areas. Maybe someday I'll get the intake, valve cover and oil filter housing painted in the factory silver color.

      Glad you found it helpful! Yes I think there are some differences. For instance between the two studs at the bottom, on RealOEM, several caps are listed in the parts list, to cap a hole. On my intake the cap is cast into the aluminium. There might be some differences for EML-equipped cars too but I'm not sure...

    hey, thanks you so much for the helpful video! can you help tell me how did you torque the manifold nuts? I have mine on now with only hand-tightened nuts while I try to figure out how to torque them.
    thanks :)

    • @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec
      @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Adam, I could only torque the top nuts but not the bottom ones. Like you said a torque wrench wouldn't fit in such a tight space. Here is what I did: 1) I used a torque wrench to set the right torque for the top nuts 2) checked how that torque felt like with a hand tool 3) tightened the lower nuts using the same hand tool until I felt approximately the same torque.
      To spread the load evenly I started with the center runner nuts, then did the next runners on each side and moved this way across all the runners. It's not overly critical I think to torque the manifold evenly, but out of precaution I opted to do that. Good luck!

    Hey again, thanks for the video, that really helps! Did you also make a video about the removal of the intake manifold?
    After removing the air intake tubes, throttle, injection rail etc, it should come out quite easily or is there anything else to consider?

    • @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec
      @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec  Před 3 lety +1

      Glad it helps! About the intake removal video - yes and no. I recorded the process, but the end result was so bad that I decided not to use it. The video was too dark and grainy (my camera isn't very good) and the audio was bad.
      Other than what you mentioned there aren't any special considerations for the removal of the intake, no. The lower nuts are the most difficult IMO, because of tight clearance. I used a stubby offset wrench from SK Tools and it helped a lot. A crescent or half moon wrench might work too. When reinstalling the intake I suggest that you keep the fuel rail and injectors loose. If the first injector is seated in the intake manifold, it won't clear the upper coolant hose.

    • @piano302
      @piano302 Před 3 lety

      @@ClassicBMWFanInQuebec yeah I wanted to remove the injectors anyway to replace the small O-rings on them because they are often pretty worn.
      Another question I have is about the valve you show at 9:00 , are you sure the two lines that connect to it (the bent tube that goes to the manifold and the other that goes to the charcoal canister) are vacuum lines?
      Because in the parts catalogue they are defined as fuel hoses?!

    • @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec
      @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec  Před 3 lety

      @@piano302 Yes it's true, in a sense it is a fuel hose because it is used to vent the fuel vapours from the gas tank. That's why the hoses are much thicker than the other vacuum hoses. The purge valve uses the vacuum of the engine to vent the fuel vapours towards the intake manifold, for combustion. At least that's how I understand it... I should have made it clearer in the video.

      @@ClassicBMWFanInQuebec ah oki. There is a hose on the intake manifold that drips oil on my cold start valve. I think it might be from that big "hose". Why would oil come there? Thank you for answering. Great video as always!

    • @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec
      @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec  Před 2 lety

      @@Rockelement Thanks :) I don't know how it is set up on the E23... but I would guess it's related to the crankcase ventilation system. From what I understand there is a tube that carries oily/misty fumes into the intake so it can be burned, instead of releasing it into the atmosphere. Maybe that tube is torn. Do you get clouds of smoke from the exhaust pipe occasionally?
