Very good video, I have thought about doing this after the 6 years I owned my 2009 E91 with the N47. And after watching this I now know why the engine don't have the same power it had when I bought it. Luckily my engine model don't have the swirl flaps.

I recently done the same on a van.
Got a tip from someone who suggested immersing it in diesel over night. I did this and in the morning all the gunk was dissolved sitting at the bottom of the container.
I left the rubber seals on and the became soft so had to get new ones. But the diesel worked unbelievably.
Does this really work? I'd love to try it and don't want to mess up my BMW's intake manifold... Diesel wont eat anything else and only loosens the carbon buildup?

Hi George great videos, Super helpful with all my n47 issues so far. Just wondering as im not very confident cleaning the inlet ports on the block its self. Is there any downsides to just cleaning the carbon build up on swirl flaps and inside the inlet manifold only instead of doing the lot?

I cleaned my 525s with petrol, it was worst then the worsts , but petrol cleaned it like new.
I had a shot every time you said NOW or NOW THEN, I'm presently in A&E being held down by six nurses.
I think I mentioned a couple years ago that I was shocked how immaculate mine was at 145k miles at the time so it was driven properly mainly long journeys. Peace✊

I bought a 2nd hand inlet manifold to replace one on my 320d where the brass rod had worked its way out into the engine bay!! The new one was filthy, but I used a gorilla tub, and loads of really hot water with a few cups of Daz washing power, and just left it to soak in the gorilla tub for a few hours then flushed with a hose and repeated the process... Automatic washing powder is fantastic at removing grease at those temperatures ;-))

Do you recommend just cleaning the manifold or removing the swirl flaps also while it is taken off? Aren’t these known to cause big problems if ingested by the engine?
Plan to do the same on mine but I have previously done it on my 3.2 did shogun, I found oven cleaner, the foam kind to work really well for agitating the parts you can't get to and then did the same with a pressure washer...

Ive spent 3hours cleaning mine, i used a oven cleaner and a long dessert spoon.
i had to do the delete flaps since my swirlflaps showed sign of play, i did one small tap and the clamp inside broke away. This made me realise i was so close to it breaking off while it was in the engine.
I had a clogged intake manifold on a 116d with b47 engine after only 70K KM! It had a dramatic loss of power, getting it over anything but regular highway speeds becoame impossible!
It was a lease though, so I had it replaced and thought nothing of it at the time. I own my own 316d with b47 engine now, and seeing this makes me want to pre-emptively clean it before it throws an error, and disable EGR altogether. When should I look at this inlet manifold? I have 125K KM on my car now, as far as I know (didn't get it new), it's all still original. Should I wait for symptoms to arise? Is it easy enough to remove that I could just do it over a weekend while doing other maintenance?
How did it run after? Thinking about doing this to my BMW.

My diesel 328d gave some codes P2004 intake manifold runner control stuck open & P2453 DPF Differential pressure circuit range/performance. I took The entire manifold and cleaned it but the the code did not go away so does that mean its time to replace the air intake manifold??

Get idea to clean the inlet manifold.. but blasting all that crud in to the road / drains isn’t good practice. If you have to do it again try mixing soda crystals and white vinegar inside it then leave it to soak.. you’ll be amazed how clean it will be
Newer N47 haven't got the swirlflaps at all. Mine is a N47 (E91) from 2012 and the inlet manifold differs a lot from your from 2008. I cleaned mine manifold at 100 000 miles, and it was definitely necessary.

Where do I buy the orange gaskets ? My dealer here in California says bmw doesn’t sell the gaskets separate , have to just buy the whole top of the manifold
Hey is a clogged egr the main cause that i got a drivechain error which reduces my speed and power or a sparkplug? Once a month i got a drivechain error, i did let read the errors trough obd, there where 2 errors of egr and a one from sparkplug.

My brass rod snapped and came out of the actuator gotta get the manifold out and see what's up...only new to bmw myself bought a 08 320d e90... this is all I need..if the flaps havent fallin in am I ok to blank as I've not the money to fix that..

I think that stuff is a mix of oil and carbon. Did you find where the oil is coming from ? Like turbo or crankcase breather? how is it now ?

Hi George - thanks for putting so much effort in to these videos, they’re really helpful.
I had to swap the alternator off my 191k N47N and in removing it I had to remove the anti-shudder valve. This got me a look into the intake manifold and I couldn’t believe how caked up it was! I’d say the volume inside had reduced by 50-60%!! Whilst there was obviously a clear path to the ports, there was huge protrusions of the sutty mess from the walls of the manifold.
I’ve already removed the EGR and had the idea of cleaning the intake manifold, ports and tops of the valves but with the effort and time it would take, I was wondering just how much of a benefit it would have actually have..
What are you expecting to see and feel from the engine once the intake side is squeaky clean? Do you think the benefit outweighs the effort and time to sort it?
My 318d is getting around 44mpg and I do a few miles so I’m frustrated with it for saying I got it to replace a dreamy 330d for cost purposes!

Having a less restricted intake means more power and MPGs so it's worth it in my opinion!
hey, thanks for good videos. I have BMW 520d the same motor you have. When I driving the car so rpm resting up and down while driving. I have checked thurtle door so was there a lot of oil there. And the car is minking oil. Do you have any experience with that and thanks
Good video - best degreaser for this is Screwfix non nonsense heavy duty degreaser. It is about £10 for 5litres. It eats oil and grease and is water soluble. It will remove all that stuff easily and better than any soapy degreaser. Im just a bit concerned that all that water will get into sensors on the body of those electrical control valves. I would let mine dry out overnight in a warm room ( kitchen!!) Soak the seals in tis stuff and it will clean them like you would not believe!! no solvents in it either just surfactants.

Great video mate, going to do this on my E90 320D (M47) did you mask off the electrical connectors on the manifold or just pressure washed it and let it dry? Also how long would you let the manifold dry for before reinstalling?
There is only a MAP sensor on this manifold which I removed. Manifold doesn't need to be bone dry, as long as it doesnt have puddles of water in.

As a novice a couple of questions arise:
1) I assume that the nature of the beast requires a periodic repeat of this process. What interval between those repeats has been your experience?
2) Given the mess that is typically found in the intake manifold, I would think that the head on the engine block would be in similar shape. Is this so and if so, how do you deal with it?

If your EGR valve is removed then your intake manifold will not return to this state.

Hi, guys, I have a 2013 bmw 3.0 twinturbo diesel N57. I replaced a coolant hose pipe. In order to replace this, I had to remove the manifold (+few sensors / lines etc).. now I’ve put the car back together, when I fire the car up. It takes around 5-7 seconds to start. It feels like it will fail to start, but always starts. Power is full. Drive is normal.. never had this issue before. (No engine lights) (nothing on code reader.
Any ideas what it can be ?

Not too experienced with this bit I've noticed a leak from where my swir flap acroator meets the brass rod. Looks like the o ring around the rod is allowing air into the intake. I'm assuming this should not be the case? I have bought a new/used one and will use your cleaning technique. Hopefully the new one isnt leaking too due to this being the standard....

Further to a reply I made on another of your videos a week or so ago, timing chain noise seems to be getting worse on mine and can’t afford to risk letting it grenade so am booked in with a specialist in Nuneaton to get the job done on Monday! Have been paranoid about it since day one of getting the car so.. at least it will take that paranoia away!

It’s an automatic.. so no just the chain job. Have been contemplating a full automatic transmission service though..
Would recommend auto gearbox service every 60k Miles but that can be done at anytime 👍🏻
@@jimtaylor431 I am also gonna get my chain done. Got all the bits. Chain gaskets oil filter. Also gearbox filter sump pan and oil. Ben quoted £650 for a labour only job! I'd do it myself but can't get my car high enough on my drive way. Just doesn't seem practical. So will be interesting to see George do it. Looking forward to that video. 👍

I got the 6 cylinder, f10 530d, 50,000 miles. Heard about walnut shell blasting the inlet manifold, is that advisable? At 50k miles will the manifold still be quite bad?
No need to walnut blast the manifold as it's plastic but you can walnut blast the intake ports/valves. Alternatively you can clean them like this:czcams.com/video/c_VK-cUoccE/video.html

Hey man, nice one!! I plan to do the same for my N47 - quick question, do I have to dry the manifold before fitting it back? The main reason I am cleaning it is clogged badly and I got a message "particular filter", do you think after cleaning this message will go away?
Please stay away from your engine and give your car to a trained mechanic.
@@herobo123456 cheers buddy, actually, I cleaned and it turned out the message was related to a DPF sensor and I replaced it took me 10 minutes and bought only for 10 pounds and saved probably 500 GBP so no thank you I won't give it to a trained mechanic to rip me off :)

Can this affect power/performance almost like turbo lag symptoms?
I had a 320d n47 remapped and I'm sure it's lagging in power over the last 14 months slightly
Absolutely, just take off the engine cover, remove the MAP sensor on your inlet manifold either 10m hex bolt or T30 torx holding it - there should be a hole in the sensor, this usually gets totally blocked when the manifold needs cleaning - be careful cleaning the sensor hole and don't push anything in too hard, just clear it out and the hole in the manifold until you get a chance to clean it.
I use caustic soda, it's the best way by far with no messy hands - follow George's instructions for stripping down the manifold then just soak, jet wash, soak, jet wash, soak, jet wash - looks like it just came out the factory, far superior clean than solvents and you won't smell of petrol. Need a large tub big enough to submerge the entire manifold, 500 grams caustic soda and somewhere to jet wash it clean.
Do it on every timing chain job and my customers love it, especially if it's badly blocked because they can really feel the performance improvement - seen manifolds with less than 30% airflow they're that badly blocked.
The best stuff I have found is TFR left to soak on these inlets , they literally come out like new , I always block the egr so I dont have to redo it
Your EGT will be hotter and your DPF won't be regenerated...

Yes definitely worth doing the manifold, even if you can’t do the the ports and valves
@@GeorgeAusters cheers pal, just I read a lot of people going on about the valves too. But can’t do any harm. any clean is better than no clean. My Intake was replaced at 69k. Cars just hit 90k. When it was changed Swirl flaps were solid, connecting pin from actuator was snapped. I’m hoping to prevent the same by periodic cleaning, hence checking out your video. I’ve Just removed the pipe from the throttle body, is it normal for oil residue to be present? It’s not a lot Just a smear around the bore and throttle flap.

You should be able to just replace the swirl flaps themselves on the N57. I wouldn’t recommend deleting them
Gonna do this on mine. Bought all new gaskets. And I have bought a blank for the swirl flap rod. Is there I reason why you aren't removing the flaps?

Lee Pearson Have read that unlike the M57’s, N47’s do suffer from negative driving characteristics with flap removal. Have even seen threads from folks wanting to reinstall them such is the impact to how the car drives.

I don’t want to be too much of a German here...
Have you rinsed the intake manifold on the street? I don’t know if it’s legal in Britain or not. But with this kind of behavior you wil ruin a substantial amount of drinking water (every drop of mineral oil spoils about a 1000 liters of fresh water.)
Please consider doing this kind of work in a Facility with a wastewater Filter System.

I have never heard of an "anti shudder valve" before... It looks just like a throttle body to me! What exactly does it do?
Anti shudder valves stop the engine from shuddering when it shuts off. It’s only wide open when you start the engine and closes shut when you switch it off.

@@GeorgeAusters Well thats a new one for me! I've owned a handful of diesel cars and none of them had this. Got a 330d now as well and pretty sure it doesn't have one of these. Wonder why they started fitting them as it just seems like another electronic thing to potentially go wrong IMO.
Your 330d DOES have an anti shudder valve. No diesels have throttle bodies👍🏻
Main purpose is to close off air intake to prevent a diesel runaway.

As funny as it may seem, heating up the intake manifold for cleaning is actually a pretty common thing, but only on the cast iron ones👍🏻

Hard to say really as it can take hours to clean. It's pretty much just all labour.
this is easily a 5 hour job. All labour and only 30 quid for new gaskets. Did it today and spent the whole day :)))
After you had jet washed it, should have sealed it up and filled with Mr muscle oven cleaner foam. Eats away at the crap for the last jet wash to make it shine like new inside

How much is a new intake manifold
You used to be able to get a reinforced one from Germany for around £170 including shipping but they've stopped shipping to the UK after Brexit due to the increased cost of exporting to the UK. If you look on eBay you might be able to get them to ship out of you can negotiate fees for shipping and all of the extra paperwork they need to do now

Mine is broken too. oil mist comes out from there. That's why I think there is a bad smell inside the car.

@@GeorgeAusters Yeah kind of had no choice, I already paid £150 to get my car towed there as it does not start. They said both egr valve and the swirl flaps in manifold are faulty so both need to be replaced. Total cost £2k with the diagnostic and service. Kind of think I overpaid on this one, I bought this car second hand as well, 80k miles originally and did about 5k miles. I drove around with the 'drive train' error for about 2-3 days before I took it seriously as car started to stall, I think because I did this I blew the manifold possibly parts of the engine.
The best way to clean it is ultrasound bath

Hi, unfortunately the intake manifold doesn't get cleaned from air flow alone. Your DPF get's cleaned from continuous driving because it gets hot enough to do a regeneration

Yes, gas response is quicker and felt it softer and less noise when accelerating
