- He Was Called the Dominican Michael Jordan! The Felipe Lopez Basketball Story. Felipe Lopez was the number one high school prospect after his senior year in 1994 that was called the spanish Michael Jordan when he was dominating New York City high school basketball.
One high school sports writer says, Felipe was the most hyped player to ever come out of New York City up to that point and there was more buzz surrounding Felipe than Lew Alcindor and Kenny Anderson.
His college and NBA career was a disappointment but Felipe had a special moment playing high school basketball in the 1990’s that left a mark.

Felipe Lopez was a great player and an even better person!!! Salute to our country legend 🇩🇴🇩🇴 Mr. Felipe Lopez!!!
Great person but never good
His 1st mistake was going to St. John....big mistake. He should have gone to the #1 team in the country - with a lot of other great players. That way...he could blend in and work on his game.
Wow , that is an interesting point .
He didn't Kno eneefing but da city.....he ran it 4 a cupple yrz.....he wuz inspiring 4 many Dominicans uptown.....
you are right!
Yeah he wanted to stay close to his friends and family and that can go either way.
FELIPE LOPEZ CHOICE OF ST.JOHNS OVER UCLA WASN'T A GOOD CHOICE FROM DAY ONE.FELIPE WANTED TOO ATTEND A SCHOOL WITH A LARGE SPANISH SPEAKING STUDENT BODY. UCLA WOULD'VE MADE HIM A MORE COMPLETE PLAYER. IT SEEMED LIKE NOT TOO MANY PLAYERS CAN ACTUALLY SHOOT WHO ATTENDED ST.JOHNS EXCEPT FOR CHRIS MULLIN AND WALTER BERRY.
Karl Anthony Towns, Francisco Garcia, Al Horford, Charlie Villanueva to name a few were/are also Dominican NBA players.
2 were American born
Willie King so?
@@adriandilone6166 bitch shut the fuck up
@@fuzzybwill75 still Dominicans by ancestry. "Just cause a chicken is born in an oven doesn't make it a biscuit!"
Griego don't forget Trevor Ariza, Mark Jackson and Al Horford.
Felipe not flourishing in the league hurt my heart. I believed in him when i was 13 years old.
Dough Haitian yea he never got a jump shot and that hurt him
it was a shame because he was a baller. Sadly many of these young players never pan out because 1 aspect of their game.
Dough Haiti,an yeah he a Zoe he was born the Dominican Republic which is next to Haiti
oh ok. youre telling me something i never heard.
At least he got an honest chance. There was no Len Bias sense of "what if" about him.
Schea Cotton, Lenny Cooke, Lester Earl, JaRon Rush, Paul Davis, Chris Marcus, DeAngelo Collins, Ndudi Ebi, korleone Young.
Wyndamn it's a mental warfare, them dudes were physically ready, but mentally and listening to the wrong people
Land of the Dread Heads sad but true and it unfortunately keeps happening.
James Gray as well yell
Robert Whaley,Major Wingate, Glen Bateman are others
Aaawww man....Lester Earl..... Ronnie Fields too......
Thank you for making this video! Felipe Lopez is a true legend in DR. This video brought back great memories. 90's Basketball was the best! Please make one for: Eddie Jones! (my fav)
St. Johns fan here. Thanks for posting this one.
I was in Brooklyn in that time it was crazy. He was famous.
Great reporting as usual. I'm not surprised by his humanitarian efforts after basketball. The one time I played with Felipe was a pick up game in the Gauchos gym and me being one of the least talented on the court, he kept trying to get me in the game. I didn't let him down. The last play, he came down, had a lane for the dunk, but he dished it out to me for the three and I made the shot. He was probably the coolest All-American player I ever had the pleasure of playing with or against. So, again, I'm not surprised. Bless his heart. Mature beyond his years.
Hey man, keep killing it. Love these videos and the insights they give.
Great video man
These clips are tight. Really nice man.
Love these vids bro. Stories i've never heard of. always leaving likes so u keep the vids coming.. RESPECT BRO!!
appreciate it man!
Thank you for this video. Loved it! 🇩🇴
Thanks for this 🔥🔥🔥
Great work on this video.
He's an awesome human being, a HS superstar, College Star and an NBA avg player, still better than billions on earth ,that have tried to do the same
Once again good video!
Great video!
Great video I remember the hype. He was really good, but things don't always go according to plan.
Thanks for this!
Well done video.
Great to see how he turned disappoint into doing positive things through his stardom. I wish him continued success!
Great Video dude. I had to inmediately subscribe.
appreciate it
Great video
great video again
+donp244 appreciate it
Thank you for sharing this never knew
When I was 7, my cousin Steven J. was very good friends with Felipe Lopez. I got the honor to meet him, get his autograph, and hang out with him. That was an awesome day for me.
Thank you for recall his story, i've almost forgotten him. Back in the days even in italy he gained attention as the next MJ. But isn't easy handle this kind of pressure.
Had the burden of too much expectation. Had to carry the hopes and dreams of an entire country (Dominican Republic).
Great video liked and subed keep it up
thanks man!
That was very insightful for that reason u get my subscription aiite keep 👍
thanks man
We need more ppl like Philipe
🇩🇴🏀💪🏽🇩🇴
Could you do a video about Allen Iverson being one of the best quarterbacks ever to come out of Virginia! I know it's not about basketball but every NBA fan should know how good he was at football.
Do Rafer Alston 'Skip to my Lou'
I remember him, he had crazy hops!!!
You need to do one on Rafer Alston aka "Skip to my Lou".
That's what's up, nice video
wow dude where you got those pictures from i remember playing at those courts back in the 90's before i live here in new york
Felipe was the real deal.First saw him at Golden Hoops the summer before he started his freshman yr at Rice.I wasn't impressed. My man Tom Konchalski told me keep an eye on him.I followed his H.S career and he was unbelievable.Could handle, rebound, pass, shoot and play D.I really saw him being an MJ type player. The games against St.Raymonds H.S ( with Kareem " Best Kept Secret" Reid) are legendary.Games had to be moved to Iona College in New Rochelle or Fordham U....Dominicans ( who at the time knew nothing about basketball) used to come to the game with cowbells, whistles and pride, cheered everytime Felipe did anything and really went wild when he dunked( which was at least 3 times a game).I believe Felipe chose St.John's with his heart because he didn't want to be far from the ppl that supported him.He should've chose a program that fit his uptempo style ( which St.John's wasn't equipped for). The ppl making the overrrated NYC comments didnt see this guy play.I'm glad to be one of those who did.
Thanks for the Interesting video. As soon as I heard you say Felipe had more hype than Lou Alcindor I figured this player was going to be somewhat of a bust. What's also interesting is that back in Alcindor's day I did hear and read about him from a Life magazine article, on the other hand with all the media we had comparatively speaking in a more modern time I had never heard of Felipe.
I got to Rice HS the following school year after he graduated. I saw him play live at MSG once. Crazy he didn't do better in the NBA.
Definitely remember the hype and falling in love with his game after the McDonald's game. Then he just kind of flat lined in college. Maybe do Korleone Young or Johnathan Bender sometime?
Thank you for this touching documentary!
and yes... his mistake was going to St John instead of North Carolina!
Met him in person. He was a beast on the court and also a real class act
This was a Great video..👍🙏👌 … You should do a Rodney White video ..
There are more than 2 Dominicans to have played in the NBA. Trevor Ariza, Francisco Garcia, Tito Horford, Al Horford, Carl Anthony Towns, Luis Montero, Charlie Villanueva and Luis Flores
Would have been nice if his career took off, as long if he's ok with it it's cool, God bless...
Do one about the Georgetown Hoyas in the 90s, and UNLV under Jerry Tarkanian.
Tru metalhead on Maui ey why not just watch the 30 for 30 on UNLV?
Damn bro... Blast from the past. I remember this dude back in HS watching him.
There making a 30 for 30 about this guy a year after that’s kinda dope they took your idea
He made a big mistake going to St. Johns.
And an even bigger mistake playing for Vancouver
playaflyJOE27
He was drafted by San Antonio in 1998
But he was traded to the Grizzlies for Antonio Daniels
Dumisa Tony Johnson still was a mistake playing for em
Mi mum go with him in the universiti
Did you watch the doc and then make this video lol I swear I just heard espn making a doc about this
I was in high school back in day during his sr year. this guys name use to really ring bells ny. I'm happy he's ok and didn't have one of those sad stories. yeah his career could have been bigger but he still turned out ok and made his family straight.
One year later ESPN is doing a 30 for 30.
I remember seeing him on NBA Inside Stuff while he was in college........and Hanna Storm interviewed him....and that was the last time I heard of or seen him. Till now
I met Felipe right before his draft. I was just a kid. He was at the brotherhood courts behind the old Yankee Stadium. Cool dude
One of the most fire players ever.🇩🇴
He is not just the second Dominican, Francisco Garcia, charlie Villanueva, Karl Towns, Al Horford are also dominicans
Argenis Peña there was also Jose Vargas that came from DR and played at LSU as a big man and played for the Utah Jazz.
Argenis Peña Jose Vargas actually played in the NBA before all those guys mentioned.
he's was 2nd Dominican player too make it too NBA Tito Hortford ,Al hortford dad was 1st
Argenis Peña en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Vargas_(basketball)
He was the 2nd Dominican during that time dumb ass. You need to learn how to comprehend. lol too funny
He went to the NBA which is still a BiG deal
Good dude ,very strong personality
Dirty alone I never do what the pope says
I'm tryin' to get money like "Felipe Lopez"
- The Beatnuts: Get Funky
Marc Calhoun NICE!!!
"If I cross over, let me cross like Felipe
My flow got you hooked, best rewind, instant replay"
-Timbo King(Royal Fam)
"If rap was B-ball I get more press than Felipe,

-Oddbrawl(Nightbreed)
Has anyone else noticed everyone they called the next Jordan has been total bust?
She Hate Me Harold Miner?
Not a total bust!
The Answer was great!
Kobe,james,both great compared,& both great...
Dominican Michael Jordan, not the next Michael Jordan. There's a big difference, in case you're illiterate.
ZULU MATUBU correct. Call it like it was.
@centenario de oro how does this comment even have likes
arent horford and towns dominican too? good video fam
Draco towns is half black and Dominican
Virtil Ruff
Dominicans are half black and half Dominican.
Virtil Ruff Hahaha
Virtil Ruff you're talking like black is a nationality lmao
Kevin Martinez
Black as in african american. Dominicans don't identify as black. They identify by their nationality. Black is a american created identity in the 1960's. Before the 1960's african americans were considered colored people
2nd view first like and comment 🔥🔥
Yooo my boy
Good stuff never knew about him. I didn’t even know al horrord was Dominican till last year.
He just was afraid of succeed, was afraid of greatness. You could see it in his eyes back then. He used to penetrate a lot with good crossovers and very good moves and when having the shot at the rim he just wasn't brave enough to shut it, he just passed the ball everytime. I remember him playing with the wizards, Richard Hamilton wasn't even the half of good that kid was but he succeeded because he had no fear of it.
That doesn't make sense. He was afraid to succeed you sound🤦♂️ .. St.Johns was the best New York school to go to do your research first.
Anyone else here after watching Kevin Garnett Million Dollaz Worth of Game episode to see Felipe highlights? 👀
Can you do a miles simon vid??
0:57 dude that montecino thats were i play basketball shit.
I dead ass forgot about this dude. ThAnks 🙏
I was hype for Felipe, I remember watching his debut game at St Johns.
what ever happen to Khalid El-Amin ? i think i saw him playing oversees back in 2014 or so.
Dough Haitian somewhere eating
dont forget the smoking.
Rey K and making babies lol yell
I mostly remember people didn't like playing against him because his fingernails were so long
Rey K overseas*
I definitely remember him. it was a lot of hype....being called "The Spanish Michael Jordan" people don't know that getting that Jordan label sometimes is a curse, ask Harold Miner. Felipe had skills, probably lost the love for playing basketball...it happens.
Nah injuries ruined his nba career but he played well overseas
Do a video on shea seals or zendon Hamilton
Proud to be from St. John's!
He probably should've gone to some other place besides NYC so he could learn some real basketball fundamentals.
I remember the first time I saw him rise up...Our junior yr
I remember that cover!
Lowkey would mind that Vancouver throwback with Lopez # 13 🇩🇴
well covered story
My high school (White Plains High School) lost to Felipe and Rice in the New York State federation championship back in 1994, my senior year....
Its a shame. Here at Dom.Rep we got at lot of talent and potential great players to develop. We play the game at high speed, at lot of energy and effort, but we are unpolished because of course we dont have great high schools programs to help develop the players. The NBA scouts should take at look.
Baseball is the major sport here, but every basketball court here is FULL of kids playing basketball 24/7
I remember when I lived in Washington heights back in 94-95 he was the Dominican God at the time I forgot all about this dude till now that it's in my recommendation
I can remember this...the buzz reached up to Boston he was talked of like he was Jesus in Nikes...that St John's team got a lot of TV time
Do a story on Michael Ray Richardson.
Awesome
Do a story on Bernard Barrow one of the best point guard in New York and Newark NJ.. he didn't make it to the NBA but first guy I ever seen take the ball from people so easy. 5"8 but controlled the floor like magic Johnson
Santiago ufff activo🇩🇴🙏😍💯🥇🏆🏀
You should do Ed Cota from Unc , Hollis Price from Oklahoma, Scoonie Penn from Ohio State or Miles Simon From Arizona
I remember him. He was highlighted on NBA INSIDE STUFF back in the day. Went to the nba, BUST!!!!!
You should do one on Toby Bailey from UCLA
Dat whole team needs a story......
@@MrFaDookie Nobody on that UCLA Championship team really had a extended career in the NBA. That has to be a rarity.
@@algrolls xzaktly.....wtf happin......
i remember this guy.
New York rappers was hyping him
"I'm bout to get money like Felipe Lopez" - the beatnutz yell
Iverson was never considered to be #1 over Lopez outside of a few gurus who thought that way. Iverson simply didn't have the hype infrastructure at his disposal as Lopez did being in NYC. Iverson was not all that well known until late in his junior season and his showing at the Nike camp really opened some eyes. But Lopez was more well known and more highly regarded/respected. Iverson could have ended up being the more consensus #1 if he had played his senior year.
respect for this.
My Dominican brother Felipe. Thank u for always representing our country.
Wasn't he on the cover of Slam too? Glad to c he's doing good...
Another EXTREMELY hyped player coming out of New York was Albert King, Bernard's brother. It was said that Albert was better. When Albert was in high school, Jerry Tarkanian said that Albert King was, "better than super." Albert had a decent NBA career, averaging 12.1 points and 4.2 rebounds in nine seasons, but was never an all-star.
Rumors had it that Felipe was a 17 year old freshman in high school.
