      @@SamWittek I think it would be a great idea if you did a more in depth course with some live band examples there's nothing much out there.There's pedal demos but little examples of how they're applied to playing live or creating a part for a song. I'd buy something like that plus any more posts on the Big Sky and El Cap would have a wide appeal I'm sure.

    This is a viddo I keep coming back to. Great content Sam! Can you tell me about your Bigsky presets? How are they setup to use within each type you created? Which do you use for what type of song? Thanks

    • @SamWittek
      @SamWittek  Před rokem

      Thanks Luke! Glad to hear that it's been helpful. So I pretty much have all of them set up in 3 "stages", and each stage gets progressively wetter. For most of them I'll use the 1st preset as a lighter verb, usually when I'm playing rhythm, the 2nd preset is usually my main verb for playing lead, and the 3rd preset is usually for swells and really ambient parts. I use the different algorithms mainly for different flavors, and they vary in how washy they get. For example, the Bloom presets are slightly more "natural" and straightforward, where the Plate presets are dialed more washy and ambient. I like to switch between algorithms depending on what the song calls for. Hope that helps!

  • @FINDYHARMON
    @FINDYHARMON Před 2 lety +1

    Thanks for the videos Sam! Curious how you set up the ElCap to quickly get to different sounds live. Looks like you adjust the mix with your foot, but what about repeats and subdivisions? Do you usually just leave them where they are for most of the set and only play with the mix?

    • @SamWittek
      @SamWittek  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks man! Yeah 99% of the time I’ve found that I’m on .8th for the subdivision and I don’t really ever touch the repeats unless it’s for a very specific part. So really I just dial the mix with my foot from song to song when I’m playing live. If I need to change the subdivision usually I have enough time to just bend down real quick and make that change. Thinking about moving to a timeline though sometime down the road!

    Hey brother! Any tips or upcoming videos on dialling Mod pedals? I'm pretty good at getting good tones out of delays and reverbs, but REALLY struggle to dial in modulation without it sounding like a bunch of mush.

    • @SamWittek
      @SamWittek  Před 2 lety

      Hey man! For sure, I've found that if I'm using a thick reverb, it can quickly turn to mush if the depth is dialed too high on a chorus or vibrato. Typically I'll dial a less intense chorus/vibrato with a lot of verb, and I can get away with a more intense chorus/vibrato with less verb. Regardless though, a little bit goes a long way with mod effects. Hope that helps!

I've been having problems though with getting lost in the mix. I'm going to try those brighter reverb & delay settings. I'm also having trouble hearing my effects and tones that sound so nice at home and then during Sunday morning P&W, I just can't hear what they are doing. @DonMPhotography Před rokem

      @@SamWittek Thanks for asking! .. both actually ... There was a new guy on sound board??? ... I may have been a little too loud at the start of practice but had turned my amp down and set it on a chair beside me as a monitor. I have in ears but they thin out the sound so much that I don't enjoy the sound of my guitar so I end up using them loose to hear the vocalist but was using my amp to monitor the guitar sound. The song leader actually asked the sound guy to turn up my guitar in his monitor, so I don't think I was over powering in the sanctuary. I know in the past my Tele has been very hard to differentiate from the acoustic guitar so I think maybe a brighter sound would help to stand out and for me to hear the effects better. FWiW ... I'm playing a Squire Telecaster through my pedal board into a Fender Blues Jr.

    • @SamWittek
      @SamWittek  Před rokem

      @@DonMPhotography Gotcha that's good to know. Definitely is tough trying to manage stage volume, and deal with the in-ear mix, all with a new sound guy too. If I were in your shoes I'd maybe try to meet up with the sound guy an hour before rehearsal (if they're cool with it) and try to find a good tone that works. That way you can at least ensure that things are sounding ok in the house

    Wow such a helpful, straight forward video! I got a question about the big sky. Is it jarring at all to switch presets during a song? Like does the last reverb keep ringing a bit after you switch presets? Or would a person need to let it decay out before they switch if they wanted to switch at a quieter part of the song

    • @SamWittek
      @SamWittek  Před 2 lety +2

      Thank you! So glad you found this helpful. Yeah so that’s actually one of my favorite functions of the BigSky! You can turn on “spillover”, which will let your reverb trails persist when switching presets. Super helpful to avoid any jarring transitions between verbs

    The comment on how reverb needs to be toned down when playing in a band is to true. I was very excited to bring my Plethora X3 to band cause of all the dynamic effects I can finally bring into Worship. Reverb was one I had on very high setting. What happened is the reverb shook the acoustics in the room and combatted with the keyboard sounds. I had to dial back my settings to a third of what I had originally. Just enough is always best.
