  • Ringing on the bells of All Saints, Winterton, where I spent nearly ten years ringing, right from learning to handle a bell.
The back five were cast in 1734 by Daniel Hedderly. He cast them in the Market Place just down the hill from the church, where there was a weir. The treble was added by Taylors in 1899.
Over time the Harrison bellframe installed in 1734 became unsafe, and in 1948 after much fundraising in Winterton, Taylors retuned the six and rehung them in a frame for eight bells. The 1899 treble wheel was reused as it was in good condition. They were last overhauled in 2001 when pulleyboxes and clappers were rebushed and made good. They are a pleasure to ring despite the oddstruckness and very long rope drop.
I used to think these bells were bloody brilliant, however listening to them objectively I can say they are nice but not great. The main problem is the 5th is far too dominant- it is a powerful bell, while the tenor makes a nice mellow thud on the end of the change.
