A lot of IRL pirates were gay and involved with other men on the ship. It's where the word "matey" comes from, Matelotage, which was basically just pirate marriage

I wasn’t sure I was going to like this, but I ended up binging the whole thing in a day - it’s the perfect blend of camp and heartfelt. It’s so fun that it surprised me how emotional I got at times. Really a wonderful series!
a lot of pirates actually WERE queer! pirates were largely queer people and poc since they weren't accepted by society. pirates even had a form of gay marriage long before the rest of the world did - it was called matelotage, and whilst some pirates used it to commemorate strong platonic allyships, it was widely used between pirates in romantic and/or sexual relationships as an equivalent to marriage! so yes, historically pirates were very queer - the reason they're widely portrayed as cishet white men in media is less due to historical accuracy and more due to the delicate sensibilities of rich bigots funding the portrayals, lmao.

I will give you the answer to: "Is Hodor gay?" The actor, Kristian Nairn, is gay and very much out.
Folx tend to say that the show is a bit slow in the first three episodes and then it picks up the pace at episode 4.
"Was coming out a thing in the 1700's?"
Yes.
There were dozens of "molly-houses" (gay pubs) in London in this time period. There were over a half-dozen well-known cruising grounds throughout London including "Sodomite's Walk", the bog-houses at Lincoln's Inn Fields, St James' Park (because you couldn't arrest someone for a crime committed on the grounds of St James'), and a little lane near the Royal Exchange called Pope's Head Alley where the wealthy used to go shopping for working-class men. There were gay anthems that were sung in the molly-pubs. There was graffiti on the walls of public toilets. There were "Aunties", there was drag, there was kink, there were sex shops. There were even strange ritualized parties where a man in drag, surrounded by attendants, pretended to give birth to a cheese or a doll, and then there was a Christening and everyone got drunk and partied. Who knows what THAT was about. There was a specific gay language with slang words for important things like "shap" (from chapeau) for hat, "stampers" for shoes, "indorser" for a man who tops ("indorse"/"endorse" = "strike from behind"). Basically, there was a whole gay scene in the 1700's.
Anytime you read about the "degenerate" parts of town or "infamous acts" in any mainstream book from the 1700's, there is a decent chance they are talking about men hooking up in the streets. Your country has a rich queer history, going back many centuries.

17:38 pirates were often executed whether on their ship or in public and often didn’t live that long (in today’s standards)
Pirates knew their lives on the high seas were brief. On average, pirates lasted in their chosen career for only two years before they died by illness, injury (usually acquired in battle), starvation or execution. In general, the life of a pirate was often short lived. Oftentimes, their families never even knew what had happened to them.
Stede Bonnet was only 30 when he was hanged in Charles Town on December 10th 1718.
Blackbeards exact cause of death is unknown. After a battle, it was noted Edward Teach had been shot at least five times and stabbed over twenty times, making it difficult to tell what was the felling blow. His head however, was hung from the mast, and all but two of the captured pirates were eventually hanged. Legends about his death immediately sprang up, including the oft-repeated claim that his headless body, after being thrown overboard, swam between 2 and 7 times around the ship before sinking.
Also, I think this show is basically Xena: Warrior Princess but it’s about male pirates instead of women in Ancient Greece. 😂 It’s campy, it’s New Zealand-y. The tall, handsome one will be showing up eventually and it will be queer af in innumerable ways, don’t worry.

Loved this reaction! :) The first episode IS very camp, and it's a valid worry. But (hopefully this isn't spoiling anything too much to say) just rest-assured you don't have to worry they will pull the rainbow flag out from under us at the last minute.
