  • The EGR valve on older cars is a common problem that can contribute to performance issues. I am replacing my original factory unit. This means the original was over 27 years old. Space is relatively tight for wrenches so be patient removing the compression coupling nuts. While you are at it you should probably replace any vacuum lines that connect to it. Don't make the weakest link of the repair be a $1 piece of hose. I think I spent a couple hours on the repair. Video recording always makes things go a little slower. I bet if I had to do it again I could probably do it in 1 hour. So, I suppose I saved $100- $150 doing the repair myself.

I am so glad that I have found your videos about the various repairs/replacements you have performed on your 1994 C280. I have an identical vehicle, also a 94 with 113K miles and it runs for the last 20 years without any issues; however the check engine light came on recently, and I have to learn and identify where the culprit may be and get the issue corrected for smog test. The mechanic said the issue has probably something to do with the purge valve so he said he has tried to "clean" it for me as the engine idles and runs fine. He told me I should drive the vehicle and see if the light will come up again after the "cleaning". He did not replace the purge valve with a new one. You have published where the purge valve is located in the engine bay and how the few vacuum lines were connections in your other video, so that was super helpful if I ever need to replace the unit. I have subscribed and will view all your other videos about this 94 W202 M104. Many thanks for sharing your expertise with the world!

What's your acceleration issue? I've got a 94' C280 as well and it also accelerates weirdly... I'll step on it and I can feel the power coming and going in quick succession but the cars not going anywhere, almost like it's stuttering, it's very strange. Can't figure out what it is.

What are symptoms of bad EGR valve?

EGR valve is a pollution control function. Takes some exhaust gas for combustion. Depends if valve is stuck in either always open or always closed. Could end up having rough idle. Fuel trim goes out of whack and may use not gas than necessary. It is a weird device…mine was cleaned before and I want to be sure so I replaced.
