  • In this episode of Driveway Dudes, Paul and Will shows you how to clean your EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) Valve, Inlet Manifold and Inlet Valves without removing any of them.
    This is a home experiment and an unbiased use of JLM Diesel Air Intake & EGR Cleaner. Similar products are available.
    This product is designed to dissolve carbon deposits, gum and varnish build up. It should restore air flow to the engine thus improving power and acceleration while reducing exhaust smoke.
    Paul & Will did their best to follow the instructions on the can. They adjusted the throttle and amount sprayed accordingly.
    This product is a hazardous material, it is extremely flammable and harmful to skin, lungs and eyes. We strongly recommend wearing gloves and eye protection. Please read the instructions and warnings carefully.
    If you cannot get direct access to the turbo an alternative would be to spray (less effective) into the air duct in the direction of the turbo but please remember to remove the MAF (mass airflow)/air intake sensor first as the cleaner may damage it.

    I'm a diesel mechanic and can tell you now that your wasting your money trying to clean the valve with that stuff....!!!
    The only way to clean correctly is to remove the valve and clean it by hand , soak it in paraffin overnight and then dry it off and then get a tin of spray on oven cleaner and thoroughly coat the valve , leave it to work in for a couple of hours and then get a toothbrush and give it a good scrub and it will look like new.....👍

    Been having troubles with my 1.3cdti Vauxhall Meriva of late... laggy turbo, sometimes not boosting at all. Looking into using this style of EGR cleaning (as a recent repair meant I saw a very clogged and grotty EGR system) as well as the turbo cleaner as they seem to be the best tries before drastic action is needed. Vids like this are a great help, appreciate people like yourselves putting them up 👍

    I have a Toyota 3rd gen Prius and it's Impossible to remove the EGR valve only. What worked was using an extra reach 12 mm racheting wrench for the three Nuts in the back and I had a hard time reaching the 4th HIDDEN 12 mm nut underneath the EGR cooler. Used a Torx E8 socket for the two Bolts ( in the back of EGR cooler) and we finally freed the EGR assembly. Now I can clean the valve and EGR cooler easily. Good video

    I've done this job on my C4GP. I used the Wynns EGR valve cleaner which is about a tenner from Halfords in the UK. With the Wynns you have to use the entire can. I sprayed mine just after the air filter because the Wynns won't harm the MAF or the turbo (my C4GP has the 2.0 HDi engine). I let the car idle and gave it 1 second bursts of spray. The engine note will change and as soon as it recovers give it the next spray and repeat until the can has been used up.

      The instructions and application of EGR valve cleaners may differ from brand to brand.
      They claim they can clean effectively.
      We haven't tried Wynns product but If it worked for you then that's all that matters.

      That's daft, unless you're driving a very old car. The EGR in most modern vehicles won't open unless the engine is under load (revs above 2000). This is because generally engine temps will be relatively low and the risk of valve clatter is minimal. In diesels this is especially true as Diesel engines run colder at idle than petrol ones. I find it pretty unlikely that your issue was the EGR. It's possible that it may have been the throttle body and you were just lucky enough to have managed to free up the valve without having to rev it.

    Great job guys, indeed useful. The JLM instructional video (today at least that I checked) is saying to not spray it on the turbo as other people are saying, but to the inlet and not on the mass air flow sensor (MAF). On good trick on this car would be to remove the MAP sensor and spray to the hole.

    • @DrivewayDudes
      @DrivewayDudes  Před 5 lety

      Hi ktopoglidis,
      Thanks for the comment.
      Instructions and directions released by different brands are usually generalised and not model specific.
      It is possible to spray directly through the turbo provided it's not hot.
      The spray canister being highly pressurised would be very cold and spraying it into a hot turbo could possibly cause micro fracturing of the vanes.
      If as you suggested that removing the MAF and spraying in that way, we would reckon the majority of the spray would hit the inside of the pipe before a very little would eventually find it's way to the EGR valve

    • @ktopoglidis
      @ktopoglidis Před 5 lety +1

      indeed they are not model specific the instructions from the manufacturers, but they do say in their video to do not spray in the turbo. There are several reasons, but I don't go into that. For many european models (Citroen, Mazda, Peugeot, Volvo, Mini and possibly more) the engine is the same (or similar). So taking one bolt that keeps the MAP is as easy as taking out the intake pipe.
      I will agree that you may have issues of hitting the pipe and run down a bit, but still might be better option.
      The JLM video is here also: czcams.com/video/rFoZ6F1KESw/video.html
      Since I wanted to clean and the pipes etc I sprayed also on the turbo a bit.

      Hi K,
      Good on ya. No better way to learn than to try it for yourself.
      Sometimes DIY can stand for Destroy It Yourself but not so in this video. You will not damage anything as long as you do not spray any sensors i.e. Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor being very sensitive.
      If after using the can of EGR valve cleaner the EGR valve is still choked up then it would have just cost you the price of a can to find out.

    Two things. One, as soon as you get your intake reassembled, go for a drive, it's best to do a decent 15 minutes at highway speeds to burn up any of the EGR cleaning fluid that's left as residue.
    Two, those cleaning sprays work best preventively. That means if you want your diesel engine to last for ages, start doing this every 20 to 30 thousand km from new. If you've bought a second hand diesel, pay to have the intake and EGR valve cleaned, then use this spray to keep it from clogging back up. Or don't, it's your car.
    I would hve also cleaned the MAP sensor.

      Spending £10 - £15 and an hour of your time could potentially save you £hundreds in garage bills.
      if you do decide to do it then just be careful that you spray it after the MAF as it is sensitive to the EGR cleaner.

    EGR cleaner is a flamable fluid. So if you can spray into the turbo intake, the highest part of the cleaner fluid will burn in the cylinders. Maybe a little can go out to the exhaust system, but the huge part of them will go into the catalysator, and not into the EGR tube.
    And i think, that very small burned cleaning fluid will not remove that lots of carbon dust from the EGR valve.

    • @DrivewayDudes
      @DrivewayDudes  Před 6 lety +1

      It worked for us and we believe for many more people that have used it.
      We didn't manufacture it nor can we say how much will be burned in the cylinders or how much will recirculate.
      We made a video to see how effective it was. We followed manufacturers directions of this brand and the result was in our opinion that it did indeed do what it was designed and marketed for.
      Our EML was on before we started and afterwards it was not. If just a tiny percentage got through then apparently it was enough to make a difference.

    • @alessandrodicesare8374

      Absolutely! Then consider that only a small percentage of the exhaust fumes get fed back to the egr. Anyone who has ever cleaned an egr valve after stripping it knows how much effort it takes to scrub it clean. There are no short cuts. Strip and scrub! You may want to look inside your inlet manifold while you're busy because i just finished removing about 350 gr of gunk with oven cleaner. Enjoy!

    As an older fella, here is one of my best pieces of advice-
    The skin is actually the largest organ in the human body and absorbs tons of nasty things in your lifetime. This is the reason that topical cremes, skin cremes, arthritis pain cremes, etc., etc. work so well. They are easily absorbed by the body through the skin. Wear gloves for everything! Brake fluid, motor oil, transmission fluid and radiator fluid are highly toxic (like poison).
    Also your lungs are your air filter for your body. They are not easily replaced. Wear a mask, wear a mask, wear a mask! From ANYTHING in a spray can to stains, household cleaners, etc. You will give yourself a much happier life.

I've read that adding 2 oz. of automatic transmission fluid per gallon of gas will clean the EGR valve, since it doesn't burn completely and the vapor works its way into the exhaust.

    I used a Wynn 3, for £10 from Halfords today and as instructed by the manufaturer, first allowed the engine to reach the operating temperature and then gave shot bursts by one second intervals while occasionally reved the engine to 1500 to 2000 RPM. Then left the engine on idle for 5 minutes and after that drove the car for around 7 Miles ( 5-10 km is advised). Eversince the engine is back to normality and now just can detect very weak hiccups whereas before the application of the cleaner it would hiccup constantly and would loose the power in idle position. I'm still waiting to see the problem % 100 sorted, otherwise will buy another can or replace the vale which is an expensive option ( EGR valve + labour costs and VAT is around £200 for my Renault Megane 2005)!

    • @DrivewayDudes
      @DrivewayDudes  Před 6 lety

      Hi Daniel. Glad that the Wynn cleaner worked well for you :) We recommend that you add an EGR Valve clean to your service schedule (at your discretion) or at least every 20k miles (30-35k km). This way the cleaner will hopefully dissolve the built up carbon and gum since the last clean and hopefully dissolve any of the older carbon build ups which were missed by the last clean however are now since exposed to cleaner. I'm not familiar with the Wynn cleaner, however if it is like the JLM cleaner we used, it should also be an intake cleaner which means it should yield positive results when it comes to cleaning your intake system and valves too. Keep us updated on your progress :)

    Having taken my EGR valve out to clean it, I find it hard to believe a bit of spray will get an EGR restricted with gunk clean. I scraped gunk off my EGR and soaked it in white spirit.
    When I put it back there was an increase in power.
    Also is it a good idea to have the at least two desert spoons of gunk that were in my EGR to be sucked into the engine?

    • @DrivewayDudes
      @DrivewayDudes  Před 6 lety +1

      The chemical composition of the EGR cleaning spray is such that it is capable of breaking down the deposits, ignites with the air fuel mixture and is expelled through the exhaust.
      Is Gunk ignitible ? If not then be careful as fluids do not compress well and could possibly harm your engine.
      In the very near future we will be making an engine cleaning video, We may use a car or a motorbike, e.g. one of our cars or maybe a Px Arcobaleno that is to be restored.

      This video is for DIY maintenance on a working EGR valve to maintain optimal performance/operation.
      If an EGR valve becomes faulty this would be the first step to carry out then if no joy it may have to be removed and repaired or replaced if necessary.
      We have carried out this procedure on several vehicles in the past and found it worked satisfactorily.
      We will definitely consider making a video of an EGR valve removal in the future.

    Question on this insertion location, how can this work when the EGR valve is not in the air intake flow? It is only in the Exhaust gas flow, EGR valve, then to the "intake manifold"? For this to work it must go through the engine fuel burning process then a rather small percent of the "cleaner" to do what you want it to do. Seems rather chancy for it to work at all? regards

    • @DrivewayDudes
      @DrivewayDudes  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi LLuE88,
      It does seem a bit of a waste alright. Maybe only a small % is actually needed.
      As we understand, all egr cleaning sprays have similar application instruction.
      We followed the printed instructions on this particular brand and it appears to work.
      This is preventative maintenance and it works on this car. Rather pay €10 or €15 for a can that is effective than risk trying some other method that may or may not work and could end up being costly.
      No doubt some time in the future the egr valve may have to be replaced (€200-€300+) but for the moment this is an inexpensive solution, if only temporary

      That's fine, my main concern was the amount of time and knuckle busting it takes to remove only to clean the EGR valve, it's very close to having to partially lift out engine to get at the EGR valve. I will do as you have indicated, also have a syringe that's 1" in diameter, works great to pump the diaphragm up and down, regards thanks, regards

    • @DrivewayDudes
      @DrivewayDudes  Před 6 lety

      Some claim that they can remove the egr valve without too much difficulty. For them it may very well be located in a more accessible place on their cars, vans, trucks, etc.
      This works for us and as you mentioned it would need a partial lift of the engine to access it directly.
      In our case, an M6 type bolt and 2 jubilee clips will give us the access we need to enable us to carry out this simple straight-forward cleaning operation.
      If an engine lift even partially was required then it wouldn't be considered a preventative maintenance operation that could be easily carried out by a diy enthusiast/s

    • @DrivewayDudes
      @DrivewayDudes  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi Joey. Glad you like the video and sorry to hear your having issues with your C4 Grand Picasso.
      May I ask, how often do you change the Oil & Oil Filter and when did you last do so? Also what oil grade have you been using and does it meet the ACEA & PSA specifications for your engine? Using the recommended oil for your engine and one with low SAPS (Sulfated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulfur) along with a high quality oil filter can help maintain good oil pressure and reduce the build up of deposits in your combustions system and exhaust system.
      Please see this link as an example of how an oil with low SAPS has less of a "fouling" effect on a 1.6HDi EGR Valve than that of conventional oil: goo.gl/images/2cgGpN

    Hello Driveway Dudes :)
    Some advice would be lovely!
    I was driving my Peugeot 208 today, as I left a roundabout the car shuddered and the check engine light came on. Now having trouble accelerating at low gears. The car will start easily, but when I put it in first gear, it has trouble actually pulling the car. If I move to second gear at 10 miles per hour it has trouble gaining speed again. Similar changing to third gear at appx 20 miles per hour, trouble gaining speed. It's like it doesn't have enough power.
    We have disconnected the battery and let the car reset. It will run fine for a few minutes, but when I reach appx 20-25 mph the issue occurs again.
    Another strange thing that happened at the same time is that when I turn off the engine, the fan continues to run until we disconnect the battery.
    It is a Peugeot 208, petrol, 1.4, 2013 plate.
    Thanks xxx

    • @DrivewayDudes
      @DrivewayDudes  Před 6 lety

      Hi AtemsGal,
      The 208 is a good car but like most cars can be prone to faults, be they minor or more serious.
      Ideally you would need to get it checked and scanned by an approved garage so that any faults that are recorded on the cars ECU will show up.
      We have heard of various reports of issues with 207 and 208 models similar to your issue.
      The most common reports are - slipping clutch, coil pack, a fuel injector, dirty fuel, overdue service, failing alternator, etc
      A replacement clutch or coil pack is expensive, an injector or alternator less. Dirty fuel can be drained. Service costs would depend on where you were to bring it.
      Very seldom will a scan not locate the issue.
      I would repeat above, Please have it checked by an approved garage.
      Hope this helps.

      Hi Paul, You are not putting us on the spot. You are asking for our advice and views and we can offer that. We would never say - you must do this or you must do that.
      The 2007 Citroën C4 1.6hdi that Will owns is his daily driver. It has to date over 135k miles, is reliable, pulls strong and can still exceed 55+ mpg.
      To his knowledge the turbo has never been replaced.
      He is meticulous in his maintenance and servicing of the car i.e. He carries out weekly checks and services the car within the service schedule. He uses the oils, lubricants and service parts that Citroën recommends. He will cross reference with other makes and brands to make sure he uses nothing but the best. He uses Total Quartz oil, Mann filters, Michelin tyres, etc. The car responds well and it drives and handles like it should.
      From what we have researched, it appears possible that a well looked after 1.6hdi engine can last 200k miles and beyond. Look for yourself, there are many examples for sale with mileage way in excess of that.
      Hope this helps.

      There are different types of audio reversing bulbs available to buy.
      Two things to take into account.
      1. The fitment size/shape and 2. Canbus friendly (i.e. your car will accept the bulb and not throw up a fault on the dash.
      I have tried some in the past. From experience I have found they don't last very long.
      A reversing proximity sensor kit may be a better option. They are inexpensive but installing it may be a challenge for the average diy enthusiast.

    Hi guys, my wife’s C4 GP 1.6 hdi is showing an engine management light and an ‘anti pollution faulty’ message. The car is driving ok up to 80 kph /50 mph but after that it can slow down going up hill, can hold back in traffic or even stall when going around a corner. Is it worth trying this treatment or is it altogether more serious? I’ve also thought about changing the fuel filter and air filter but then I’m stuck for ideas after that. Thanks for the great videos, they’re really inspirational.

      Hi robru,
      It could be a partially clogged EGR valve or it could be a clogged DPF.
      If the fuel filter was bad, the car may have starting and acceleration issues at all speeds including stalling as well as pushing out excessive exhaust smoke.
      Cleaning the EGR valve with the spray would be the first and least expensive step in a process of elimination.
      Hope this helps.

    I think you would of achieved more in that video by changing the rear wiper blades
