  • Here's the full engine autostart sequence for a General Electric GEVO diesel-electric locomotive! Featured is CSX ES40DC number 5414. The video starts with the alerter bell and runs through to engine idle.
    Filmed on Sunday, September 3rd, 2023, in Brandon, Florida.

      @@MultiPurposeReviewer Probably because the unit was the last piece of rolling stock in the last movement it was part of :P (Not sure why I never saw your reply until just now)

      @@SpeakerPolice Well yeah, but if you have an engine on the rear end, you shouldn't need a fred. The only reason you would is if the DP software was either defective or not installed, but if that were the case, why is an engine on the rear end in the first place?

      @@MultiPurposeReviewer Probably a local move, not going very far, engine DIT, etc. Something like that.

      @@SpeakerPolice Something like that. We had a notice in effect for a while that if your DP motor was a Norfolk Southern unit, you had to use a fred because some software incompatibility prevented you from being able to dump the air on the rear from the head end. But that issue got fixed a couple years ago.

      @@MultiPurposeReviewer Sounds about right. 😂 I remember some GE widecabs having turbo problems which resulted in stickers saying "Do not occupy side walkways with engine in notch 5 or higher" due to the turbos' propensity for detonating
