    The ottavino has the density, timbre, intensity, and tonal quality of a soprano singer while the normal instrument has the density, timbre, intensity, and tonal quality of a tenor singer! Both keyboards sound together as if they were mother and child!!!!!

    I can see how a harpsichord would be jealous of this small instrument with more harpsichord sound than a harpsichord

      @justspectator9963 I know that. The title says virginal, not harpsichord or clavichord

      A virginal is a small string keyboard instrument that plucks the strings like a harpsichord. I never saw one but I heard plenty on recordings. I took music history in college. I would love to build one of these instruments. I tuned a double manual for my college piano teacher. She was good to me when I was on academic suspension. I only found out I was dyslexic in my jr year in college. So failing academically was not new to me. Enough of my early college years. I did go into electronics with help from an educational psychologist who tested me for dyslexia. Shame on my highschool for not knowing the signs. I took the same test in Grammer school. 73

      @justspectator9963 It's not a clavicord, clavichords strike the strings whereas harpsichords pluck the strings, a virginal is simply a small/compact harpsichord

    There are other Mother-and-Child virginals called Muselars with the Mother keyboard to the right, which produces are deep resonant sound because the plucking point is farther away from the hitch pins on the left allowing the strings to vibrate more freely.

    Some people say this is genius. I agree it’s genius. But that’s a nuanced term. It depends to what extent this feature was utilized or how much it was wanted. I mean I don’t hear as many praises for the invention AND the gradual steps in improvement of the “piano” from clavichord(or whatever was the earliest version) to the modern non electronic piano. Although arguable electronic synthesizers are as much “genius” as the piano itself. It’s just that we have accepted some of these inventions and take them for granted so we tend not to be surprised by them as we are by this piano “mother child” expansion option.

    • @hori166
      @hori166 Před 3 lety +8

      It's "coupled" with the lower keyboard. When the jack rail is removed @ 0:44 you can see the "jacks", the things that pluck the strings. When the "child" is placed on top of these jacks, the bottom of the child keyboard has openings so when the jacks from the "mother" rise up when the mother keys are pressed, the mother jacks also push up the "child" keys, and also the jacks. This is difficult to visualize if you don't know the harpsichord mechanism for double keyboards, but you can Google it and see diagrams. Sadly, none exist for Mother-and-Child virginals.
