In ancient times, the sky was seen as a perfect clock. Stars and planets moved along fixed trajectories, repeating the same movements yearly. Any change in this apparent harmony, it was believed, must also have effects on Earth. The sudden appearance of a comet or lunar and solar eclipses was particularly suspicious. It was regularly suspected that approaching comets caused earthquakes, especially large ones.
Even today, many believe that the position of the Sun, Moon, and even the other planets in our solar system can cause earthquakes on Earth. However, part of this belief is absolutely to be excluded. The gravitational attraction of the other planets, even the largest, is indeed too weak to cause an earthquake. As demonstrated by the famous event in March 1982, when all the planets aligned (or almost) relative to Earth without causing any effects, not even if all the planets were aligned together could they influence the balance of our faults... not even the most sensitive ones!
In short, the planets are too far away to cause trouble, but there seems to be some truth in the belief that the Moon can influence seismic activity. By studying the frequency of large earthquakes in Chile, California, and Japan, researchers have discovered that earthquakes greater than 5 are more likely to occur during the new or full moon when the Sun, Moon, and Earth align.
But wait a moment... If this were true, it would mean that all the more reason a solar eclipse, a phenomenon for which the Moon and Sun must be perfectly aligned, could unleash the "perfect storm" capable of disrupting the Earth's surface at its weakest points!
And right now, while the entire North American continent is in feverish anticipation of the April 8 eclipse, a bunch of rumors have started circulating based on these evaluations, suggesting the possibility that the cosmic event could even destabilize the balance in the so-called "New Madrid Fault," with the consequent devastation of a territory that experienced the fury of a very strong earthquake many years ago.
And wouldn't you know it, the earthquake in the winter between 1811 and 1812 was preceded by a total solar eclipse, and also by another particular astronomical phenomenon that is recurring these days...

We felt one in Pittsburgh in 2011 and we never get the here but apparently there’s earthquakes all the time everywhere they just aren’t high on the richter scale

Every object has gravity and alignments create variations in gravity. Normal tides are enhanced when the sun alignment coincides with the lunar alignment as happens during an eclipse. If a fault is under a lot of stress, there's a chance the increased tidal effect can give it the help it needs to break free.

First time? We had earthquake for nearly a whole year in Conway Arkansas back in 2011. To this day nobody knows why they happened, but it was speculated to be due to oil drilling....I'm going to be honest, I think it was something else.

I’m in NYC and we felt the 4.8 magnitude. My entire house was shaking. They sent out alerts about possible aftershocks. I have a strong feeling the aftershocks might take place on Monday, April 8th during the Solar Eclipse or after🙏. Stay safe.

@@EVEE_Rose-3 As a lifetime astronomer AND also with a lifetime interest in siesmology (I live 110 miles north of San Francisco, and less the 10 miles from the San Andreas Fault) I do keep an eye on any siesmic activity. Even though we have an excellent view of the ocean a mile or so away, we are at an elevation of 1100', so have no real fear regarding a tsunami.
However our locale is great for watching sunsets, always on the outlook for the ever elusive 'Green Flash'.

Within a week of the April 8th eclipse, close to a new moon, so a double tidal effect from the moon and sun. We just had a 7.2 earthquake in Taiwan.
It makes sense due to the alignment and tidal forces don't just act on water.

I was agreeing with you until you put the god idea into it. I think the god idea is unquestionably without merit. There would have to be more gods than planets. Whenever someone says, god, as if there must only be one, it is rather weird. I don't know what a god is, so the word is meaningless. Nobody agrees about what a god is or does. The god idea to which I am most familiar, has all human attributes. It is a he with human emotions. I find it interesting a god must be male with human emotions. How convenient. I did an 10 page or so Report back in 1989 while at ISU which was an overview of the New Madrid Fault and the earthquake(s) that occurred back in 1812 etc. Unlike the San Andreas Fault in CA which is on basically on the earth's surface, the Madrid Fault is some 6 miles under the earth's surface. I just came across this information today and now "things' are starting to make sense regarding various states ramping up their preparedness. Good Luck to All.

Okay, the reason there was a quake in New Jersey, three days ago, had nothing to do with the eclipse tomorrow. (It hasn't happened yet and will not affect plate tectonics). It has to do with that banger of a big quake on the other side of the planet last week in Java, and another smaller one in Cali.
I am in brooklyn and we felt an initial earthquake at between 2-3am, before the one reported this afternoon. I don't know why no one is speaking about it. . Someone must have experienced it overnight.
My cousin that lives in NY said the one that occurred on 4/5 is the fourth one that hit Ny this year!

I am from NY but I felt nothing because I was standing on my staircase in the hallway.. My daughter came running out, saying the house was shaking..I told her a big truck was probably passing. A few minutes later I found out that it was an earthquake....wow!!

I'm in the Berkshires near Ny state, in Mass. My air mattress was literally lifting off the floor & tossing about, with me sleeping on it! My body weight made no difference, had it not been for my boxes & stuff around me, the jolting & spinning would have probably threw out of bed, it was surprisingly scary & strong, and I grew up half time in Los Angeles! These are definitely more ominous & disturbing. I am caught very off guard when I'm here in New England but I felt one years ago when I lived in Hadley too. I was again, laying on my floor woken to feeling the stilts of my apt foundation swaying! It wasn't as strong as this, but I definitely felt it and got scared not realizing it was mother nature. I thought it was the sinister maintenance creep shaking the beams in the basement beneath me. My boyfriend in NYC didn't feel it, he was driving to work. I'm more sensitive though, I notice a lot more than he does. I'm going to Plattsburgh NY for the eclipse, after my mom's death anniversary the 7th and before my new condo closing on the 9th.
