      But they will come. Some just need help adjusting. Perfect being the enemy of good is an indication we aren’t so welcome which I think is why we cringe. Host populations everywhere demand perfection from arrivals they don’t like. Arrivals so demand of other arrivals fearing stepping on host’s egg shells. Cranky expats demand perfection from the host-foolish as we have no leverage and it’s negative energy. Sometimes a guy’s having a day and I’ve had success calming situations saving a few expat careers and convincing others to go back. I pick and choose potential for success. The host won’t like us more, respect us more nor benefit if we turn on each other.

    I've only been here a week, and I've seen the "expats behaving badly" thing twice already. Both times, it was expats talking loudly about the "faults" of Filipinos in front of Filipinos.
    I stayed out of it the first time in an open-air area. The second time, was in a small shop. I couldn't help myself, and told them "seems to me youv'e got a lot to learn from them about being polite and respectful." They both promptly left the shop.
    The long-suffering store clerk was clearly grateful, and gave me one of the most amazing "thank you sir's" I've ever heard.

      When I do it I try to be supportive figuring the guy is having other problems health, stress, culture shock frustration. I try not to embarrass other expats or virtue signal at their expense when diffusing. Part of the problem is in usa we’ve been accustomed to immigrants being Bastos or scamming as the norm and winning at that game that many of us think host tolerance is reciprocal. Best to negotiate with a smile. Force the smile and keep in mind the extremely low pay in an expensive society. Everyone has enough grief. If you lose your temper they could have you arrested. Keep your cool.

    • @jaysphilippines
      @jaysphilippines Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@WAdelstein you force the smile, I'll call him out for yelling at a little girl for trying to help him. We will see how that works out. 💯 percent guaranteed to be thanked for standing up for a filipina. My daughter is a filipina. I'll take the man who helps her vs the guy giving participation trophies. And on the rare circumstance it is a sick, elderly, bad situation. Maybe he should have a helper in situations. Maybe shouldn't be in philippines if he can't handle himself anymore. Talk to my daughter behind the counter like that. 👍

    • @WAdelstein
      @WAdelstein Před 2 měsíci

      @@jaysphilippines thank you for bringing to mind virtue signaling expats; another caveat. I do force the smile when frustrated as Filipinos value the smile and makes things more pleasant thus i so advise. If an expat is behaving badly he’s probably going through a rough time adjusting so if there’s a way to calm him, why not? Sacrificing a distressed ex Pat in culture shock to the host population is patronizingly paternal. We should help each other get through. It’s better for the low paid clerk to have a calmed customer.

With Kodi, TVApp on my computer (older desktop connected to TV) and internet/phone it's about 1500 pesos/month. Get a tech savvy friend to hook you up or watch a couple of CZcams videos and do it yourself. However, if 4K pesos/month stresses you, you probably need a new stream of income, get rid of your high maintenance gal, or go back home and work some more.

    Great video Mike, some of us are better off staying at home. Some will not bring the patience needed to live in another country, especially one so different from what we're accustomed to in the West. Those of us who cannot adjust to these differences should sort out another place to live, whether it be a country that neighbors their home country or their home country itself. For this individual, it would have been much less of a change for him to try Spain for example.

The difficulty is that if you are bound to a filipina, the Philippines might be your most viable choice. I shy away from telling others to 'go home' just because they point out some negatives. To not do that vlogers are doing a disservice to unsuspecting foreigners, who are made to believe in a fantasy. Without a good partner or guide, the Philippines is a very difficult country to navigate. Most need a lot of help settling here, especially a retiree who is not well traveled.

      @@user-zu5tv7zt6v I think it is. I think the biggest reason is most guys can live more local in Thailand. In the PI I basically always eat expat food and stay at expat places. But in Thailand a $2 meal is good so I eat them, I 5kbaht condo is small but clean, good AC and a pool. So again I stay in them vs the PI where I don't really want to live in a "local" place. Living like a local in the PI probably costs no more than in Thailand but I'm now willing to live that low of a quality of life, where in Thailand living "more" local is way more comfortable. I don't mean to take it out on you. I know you don't make the rules. You are only doing what you are told to do. Then I will take a deep breath and say , I'm sorry. Now where were we?
