Do Not Be This Guy

People like that needs to stay where they come from. Don't ruin the peace and our reputation here.
he just needs to learn and get along
@@mikesphilippineretirement yes, I had to adjust and it was hard for me, because what takes 5 minutes in America takes half a day here. But that's why we come here to get away from stress
@@danielbeumel4165 And if you're retired, you have nothing but free time.
But they will come. Some just need help adjusting. Perfect being the enemy of good is an indication we aren’t so welcome which I think is why we cringe. Host populations everywhere demand perfection from arrivals they don’t like. Arrivals so demand of other arrivals fearing stepping on host’s egg shells. Cranky expats demand perfection from the host-foolish as we have no leverage and it’s negative energy. Sometimes a guy’s having a day and I’ve had success calming situations saving a few expat careers and convincing others to go back. I pick and choose potential for success. The host won’t like us more, respect us more nor benefit if we turn on each other.
Guys like him don't learn, that's the problem
I’m a Brit… haven’t lived there for a while, but have experienced plenty of people like that; I avoid them like the plague! When I go do stuff like that, I take cash, good humour, a bottle of water, and a good book!
I have see many meltdown and they all come from different countries it is just not the British
I've only been here a week, and I've seen the "expats behaving badly" thing twice already. Both times, it was expats talking loudly about the "faults" of Filipinos in front of Filipinos.
I stayed out of it the first time in an open-air area. The second time, was in a small shop. I couldn't help myself, and told them "seems to me youv'e got a lot to learn from them about being polite and respectful." They both promptly left the shop.
The long-suffering store clerk was clearly grateful, and gave me one of the most amazing "thank you sir's" I've ever heard.
Yes I have found getting called out by a fellow expat from the west causes them to feel shame and leave
They need to be called out. They never expect it.
When I do it I try to be supportive figuring the guy is having other problems health, stress, culture shock frustration. I try not to embarrass other expats or virtue signal at their expense when diffusing. Part of the problem is in usa we’ve been accustomed to immigrants being Bastos or scamming as the norm and winning at that game that many of us think host tolerance is reciprocal. Best to negotiate with a smile. Force the smile and keep in mind the extremely low pay in an expensive society. Everyone has enough grief. If you lose your temper they could have you arrested. Keep your cool.
@@WAdelstein you force the smile, I'll call him out for yelling at a little girl for trying to help him. We will see how that works out. 💯 percent guaranteed to be thanked for standing up for a filipina. My daughter is a filipina. I'll take the man who helps her vs the guy giving participation trophies. And on the rare circumstance it is a sick, elderly, bad situation. Maybe he should have a helper in situations. Maybe shouldn't be in philippines if he can't handle himself anymore. Talk to my daughter behind the counter like that. 👍
@@jaysphilippines thank you for bringing to mind virtue signaling expats; another caveat. I do force the smile when frustrated as Filipinos value the smile and makes things more pleasant thus i so advise. If an expat is behaving badly he’s probably going through a rough time adjusting so if there’s a way to calm him, why not? Sacrificing a distressed ex Pat in culture shock to the host population is patronizingly paternal. We should help each other get through. It’s better for the low paid clerk to have a calmed customer.
You're absolutely right Mike. PATIENCE and UNDERSTANDING !!!
Great 👍 video and keep up the great work.

The guy must have been new here. I never walk out the door without at least 10,000 pesos in my pocket. Not to mention, if he is on a tourist visa, it's just much easier to allow utilities and other bills to remain in the GF or Wife's name and let her take care of it, skip the aggravation all together lol

Cash is king! I tell my niece “ I have to fill my wallet”. When we’re going out to eat or to a show.
In Cebu most take Credit Cards, and you get a better exchange rate if you can use them. Never been a fan of carrying cash, but in the Phil you always need some with you.

Patience and respect! In Baguio waited 30 mins for a taxi from SM......everyones smiling 😊. 30 more mins stuck in traffic then I'm drinking beer at Baguio Craft Brewery.....Patience has its rewards 😅

LOL....Bella and myself took my mom to lunch at a very nice restaurant today. We ordered and everybody's food got served except mine. Waitress kept saying that mine is coming out soon. Bella's burger came out extremely burned, so I asked the waitress to take it back and prepare a new one. She got a new burger and my order still wasn't ready. Found out that the waitress forgot to order my food, that's why it was taking so long. Everybody at the table asked why I didn't get upset, I told them I was training for the Philippines!

Its there rules, so what can you do? He probably pays the bill, so in his mind, easy to switch. But the vendor is treating the customer as New Account. Doesn't matter if he paid the bill 10 years before.
The thing that I find crazy is how many times the cashier at any business will count the change amout three times, before you get your change.
In the Philippines they have 3 clerks for every register. One to ring up sale, another to seal and tape bag shut, and another to oversee operation and direct you inline.
Nothing wrong with that

I'm going to disagree. It discredits everyone when an expat acts this way and Mike. or an other expat, could have short-circuited the abuse. "They aren't going to do this unless you have cash."

My impatience is what makes me think twice about moving there. And the bureaucracy there. A difficult mix for me. And oh my god queue skipping. Why is that a thing. I say something every time someone does that
Check out other countries before you make a final decision. Also, come here and live 6 months at least before committing. Don't believe the vlogs that paint this place as paradise. Like anywhere it has its positives and negatives, and may not be the right country for you.
I already have a lot of patience here in the US so when i get there it will come in handy.
you will need more . hahaha
Different topic but it’s on customer service. My T-Mobile bill is always wrong and overcharged. I am always on the phone with the customer service and they are Filipinas. I don’t know if they aren’t intelligent enough for the job or if it’s the company. ALWAYS very polite, but politeness only goes so far when you get repeated crappy service. A smile doesn’t make up for the hole you left in my wallet. Every time it’s “I promise this is the last time you will have to call us”. Yeah, said that last month too.
Also, I dated a Call center girl and come to find out she was drinking on the job because she can work from home. No wonder we have trouble with customer service.
When social security goes BUST..how do you live…???
Honestly, most of us will be up the creek. I noticed so many foreigners are okay with overpaying for substandard service and services. With Kodi, TVApp on my computer (older desktop connected to TV) and internet/phone it's about 1500 pesos/month. Get a tech savvy friend to hook you up or watch a couple of CZcams videos and do it yourself. However, if 4K pesos/month stresses you, you probably need a new stream of income, get rid of your high maintenance gal, or go back home and work some more.
Hopefully my follow US Citizen expats are saving and investing some their Social Security money.
I wouldn't be surprised if it collapses in 10 years or in the best case scenario: reduced payments.
Did you say you went to the BDO bank to have your balance updated on your passport? please explain that because I do not understand. Thanks.

Great video Mike, some of us are better off staying at home. Some will not bring the patience needed to live in another country, especially one so different from what we're accustomed to in the West. Those of us who cannot adjust to these differences should sort out another place to live, whether it be a country that neighbors their home country or their home country itself. For this individual, it would have been much less of a change for him to try Spain for example.
Also, I'd be happy to meet up if our paths cross in the future.
Absolutely You still in Philippines. Here is my e mail Mikesphilippineretirement@gmail.com
Easterndreamer, I think many people expect it to be like back home when traveling to another country/area and that’s when it can get out of hand like what Mike witnessed. You have to adapt and be flexible.
I absolutely agree! At least stay for a few months before deciding to settle here. I might add look at Uruguay, Colombia, Mexico, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and others. The difficulty is that if you are bound to a filipina, the Philippines might be your most viable choice. I shy away from telling others to 'go home' just because they point out some negatives. To not do that vlogers are doing a disservice to unsuspecting foreigners, who are made to believe in a fantasy. Without a good partner or guide, the Philippines is a very difficult country to navigate. Most need a lot of help settling here, especially a retiree who is not well traveled.
I enjoyed my time in the Philippines, but some of the rules is challenging.
His wife probably didn’t care less whether she had cable or not. But for an expat, it’s a great asset. The joy of having cable and ESPN. There was a great game on last night, the Pacers and Knicks which I was watching here in America.
I watch it here no problem watched Denver win big
I watch my games from a streaming website on an internet browser, if you have a "smart" t.v. that you can add an internet browser to, you can use it to watch on a t.v. as well. Although I only watch football (American) it has all the major sports on it and you can choose whatever game you want to watch.

@@user-zu5tv7zt6v I think it is. I think the biggest reason is most guys can live more local in Thailand. In the PI I basically always eat expat food and stay at expat places. But in Thailand a $2 meal is good so I eat them, I 5kbaht condo is small but clean, good AC and a pool. So again I stay in them vs the PI where I don't really want to live in a "local" place. Living like a local in the PI probably costs no more than in Thailand but I'm now willing to live that low of a quality of life, where in Thailand living "more" local is way more comfortable. i can understand the customers frustration/meltdown even if amt$ small. it’s foreigner discrimination. it’s not a “deposit”, it’s an upfront FEE. i can understand the coy point of view too. ultimately customers have to abide by their rules. but what poor organisation - they only accept cash, force you to come back in person again & again. dance to their tune. they don’t care. a negative for coming to the country. a test of patience. congrats to counter lady for offering a solution to overcome the cash only issue.

Not meaning to insult the Filipino people, but some of their cultural attitudes contribute to their 'developing' status, which never seems to advance much (a Filipino once told me, Filipinos 'lack discipline.' His words, not mine.)

Yes, the Philippines is also rated high on the list for scammers, even some foreigners take part in them.
Seen a few incidents in Thailand with farangs and officials. One was at Immigration with Korean group. They got in wrong line and started yelling at the girl that checks paperwork.
