  • This video contains spoilers for The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss.
    Sygaldry is almost like science and bears more in common with physics and calculus than how magic is traditionally conveyed in the fantasy genre. In this video, I discuss Sygaldry as well as how it might be used to solve one of the Kingkiller Chronicle's deepest mysteries: the secret to finding out what's inside the Lackless Box.

    Sympathy is the standard I hold all my magic systems in fantasy. The way I feel about Sympathy, is very similar to how I felt as a kid with DBZ's ki system. I would find my self actually believing if I focused really hard I could make a kamehameha wave (I was 7, you get the idea).
    To me, Sympathy feels tangible. It feels real and that's due to the amount of effort that went in describing the limitations and capabilities of the system in a very understandable way.

      @@felipecorpuz2476 sympathy and Allomancy might very easily be the best magic systems I know. They are simple at their core but can go pretty deep in their actual mechanics. Like the battle between Vin and the dude in book two when she was out of atium and she actually used his OWN precognition against him, as he moved in response to her response thus tipping her off and altering her response leaving him vulnerable. I just loved that scene.

    I think this video is concise, accurate, and well done.
    I like your detector concept, I think that’s a creative use of what we know about the magic system.
    I personally think the Bloodless will tie into a lot of things. Arrows show up in the books a lot. The Aethe and Rethe story for example.
    More specifically, I think that the Bloodless, and it being named after him, and his ability to get out of terrible situations without so much as a scrape; at least in myth, will reflect on how the Cthaeh uses its power to shoot people off like an arrow.
    Kvothe having spoken with the Cthaeh is both the arrow aimed at disaster, and the bloodless set to stop the disaster from happening.
    I look forward to more videos, keep it up!

    As an engineer I really love the magic systems in the King Killer Cronicals. Its almost nostalgic and conforting as it helps me to relate to Kvothe from my own college experience. The logic feels right, Believable, and possible in a world where a persons will can affect the world in such ways.

    In WMFs, during the scene where Kvothe fights the two former soldiers, he is hit in the head with a bottle and it makes a funny sound. Kvote also does not react as expected and the bottle does not break, it has been theorized that the bloodless is in the Waystone Inn and this is what stopped the impact.

    I theorised that the lockless box can only be opened with naming. for example, an iron lock might be placed on the inside of the box, the lid closed and the owner of the box who knows the name of iron might call the iron from the lock to move in such a way as to lock. The box will only be able to lock or unlock for people who know the name of iron. Might explain why Kvothe cannot now open the box because he lost his ability to call the name of iron, or whatever the material of the lock is

    • @pairot01
      @pairot01 Před 4 lety +3

      I agree, naming is the key to open the Lackless box. I think after he opens it he uses what he learned to make his Thrice locked chest and he improves the design by adding the 2 "normal" locks. We saw him say "Edro" when trying to open the box, a word we've always seen being used to open wooden doors or container, so it's most likely the name of wood (or one particular wood, like Roah).
      This ties up with a theory that these invented words we see in cursive in the text are the names Kvothe learns, he's saying them and hearing them but other people just hear the regular calling name of the element. Like when him and Elodin were in the rookery, Elodin looked at the stone wall and said "BREAK" and when it didn't work he spoke a true name and we can read it, implying Kvothe will learn the name of Stone imbued with copper but not the name of just Stone.

    Clever indeed. I wonder if there would be enough momentum from one spring triggering, or perhaps multiple triggers adding up, even possibly stored, that could reset the mechanism, this making it more infinite, or at least diminishing still adding up to more than its restriction of 8. The lockless box thing is so rpg, this just seems like common sense now that you mention it, thank you.

      Hmm, perhaps. They seem to be able to hear the utterance of their names whenever spoken. It makes me wonder though whether they have other methods of detection. For example, the ancient pot that the Mauthen Family dug up. How did the Chandrian know where to find it? Maybe the Pot uses some sort of Sygaldry Runes and the Chandrian were able to detect that?

    On what we are told, I believe there are none, but with the the laws of sympathy and sygaldry, I believe it is possible. At least it should be possible for alar-affine people to shape the ink into the desired shape on a piece of paper. It might also be possible to copy the shape of written ink from one piece of paper to another.

      I'm pretty sure it's mentioned in NOTW when Kvothe posts his "apology" letter about Ambrose and the Jackass song all across the University, he used a printing press to print a hundred copies. Not verbatim, IIRC they say something along the lines of "calling in a favor of a student with a relative who ran a print shop" in the book, but I'm fairly sure that means there's a printing press there.

  • @finalfrontier001
    @finalfrontier001 Před 4 lety +3

    i completely disagree with your magic system which is "believable" the whole point of fantasy is to escape real time.
    So your entire argument is flawed. asking for made up world in made up universe in made up continent to exactly resemble our own in terms of physics defeats the whole purpose of fantasy genre.
    purpose of fantasy is to *escape* real time, not to become one itself.

    • @jgescreve
      @jgescreve Před 4 lety +1

      Couldn't that be said about any kind of fiction? I don't think escapism is restricted to fantasy.
      Also, there are so many different types of magic systems. Having a hard magic system doesn't make a fantasy story less magicky. Have you read anything by Brandon Sanderson? Maybe it isn't your cup of tea, but he does pretty hard magic systems, great worlds and amazing fantasy stories.

    • @pairot01
      @pairot01 Před 4 lety +5

      It is not exactly the same in terms of physics, that's what makes it fantasy. But what makes it great is that it has rules that a reader knows, so whatever epic shit is done with it is not just an ass pull deus ex machina.
      Take the scene with the lightning hitting the tree at the bandit camp, in any other work it would be an unearned power that's so freaking convenient to have right now and no other time, but it's the Kingkiller Chronicle so you see an arrow hitting some rock formation and spark (like flint), you see a volley of arrows falling from the sky, Kvothe specifically asks Martin to shoot an arrow in the tree, and the lightning is triggered by Kvothe grabbing an arrow and slamming it down on something. The reader can extrapolate that Kvothe used the kinetic energy of the volley of arrows to turn the little spark he made into a giant electrical discharge, but he also bound his arrow to the arrow in the tree so the discharge would happen there. And voila, you have an earned escape from a seemingly impossible situation.
