  • To celebrate 600 episodes on Modern Wisdom, I broke down some of my favourite lessons, insights and quotes from the last hundred episodes.
Expect to learn how to have unlimited charisma, why this might be the best your life ever gets, how to work out if the entire world is a coordinated conspiracy, what Douglas Murray taught me about not having an opinion, why stupid people are more dangerous than evil people, why female self-improvement is patronising, how to gauge the honesty of anyone in your life, the danger of clickbait and much more...

Hi Chris, love your work, I feel a sense of commaradarie because of the similar topics of interest and similar fashion of addressing it.
Regarding the topic of loneliness tax, changing your opinion based on one person's (yours) experience (part of the whole experience) is not the best way to deduce a pattern. Your work enables you to meet like minded people, but most cerebral people are surrounded by people that aren't as intellectual as them and seeking another like minded person is challenging enough (because of the small percentage of it and because of all the other tasks that require our attention) that more likely than not, the loneliness tax is unavoidable. Speaking not just from personal experience but probability analysis.
      Much love :)

"Male self-improvement sees the person as mutable and the world as immutable (...) this is in contrast with the female self-improvement who sees the person as immutable and the world as mutable."
Accurate. I was a very insecure girl when starting into adult life. Finding a way to make myself better has been my #1 mission ever since, so I've literally went through all kinds of "self-improvement" stuff that is out there. The content I can resonate with is mostly from men and I would regularly wonder why that is. That may be the exact reason.

Hey man really love your stuff. It’s interesting seeing someone ask question in a neutral basis. You’re not necessarily looking for right answers. It’s more about what answers have we come up with and can we question those answers to better define what “this” is. It’s fantastic to see put into to content form when I’m sure many of us ponder things like this daily. Some would say question societal norms. Some would say against the grain. Again it’s great. Hope to see you on Rogan again soon!

Great lessons Chris, thought I'd add this, a quote - The weird thing is that the more efficient, on task, on goal you are with your time, the more energy you have. Working with no traction, or for that matter simply wasting a day, does not relax you, it drains you.

    Loneliness and Complexity of Mind
To your point on Austin I feel this is entirely dependent on your environment. Living in rural America it definitely drove my own loneliness and I was often (with good intent) told that I didn't belong there and needed to move to California or Washington DC. I took that advice, moved and made more friends in a single summer than I had in ten or twenty years back home.

Regarding neuroses and effort in vs return out:
I heard a quote once from someone who said something along the lines of "sometimes having 'control' of a situation doesn't mean gripping it with white knuckles, but merely keeping a finger touching it so you know where it is without looking."
I feel like applying that mentality to a lot of the rest of my life has helped me find that balance in what I can change the outcome of versus what will happen regardless.

That Alain De Baton idea about loneliness could be productively interpreted as describing the adaptive valley on the journey between the fake friendships facilitated by our inauthentic selves and the true connection with those kindred souls we come to meet when we finally boldly discover and assert our true selves… a difficult but worthy price to pay for authentic being and connection.

It is not the corporations that are pushing women into the business world. It is self-preservation! Fifty percent of marriages end in divorce and, as women, we have to be able to feed ourselves and our children. Yes, building a family around us is very important. But some of us also crave learning and creativity. It's not all black and white.

48:22 Loneliness Comes With a Higher Complexity of Mind. I'd use the word aloneness, as loneliness is a state of self reflecting upon self; comparing our own state with that of what others apparently are; i.e. the life of the party, etc. Whereas aloneness is the complete understanding that we are all alone at our core, and there is no conflict within that, which in turn does lead to a great depth.

With regard to the "Mary Sue" character type as found in the Mulan remake or the Star Wars sequel trilogy, the youtuber Missing the Mark had an excellent video a while back commenting on this phenomenon. Mary Sue is not just bad writing, it's a genuine archetype that symbolizes women transitioning into high sexual value while still young. In terms of that specific aspect of life, it's true that women don't need to do much to work to develop themselves. Of course, this character type and storyline only make sense in the context of traditional gender roles. It becomes nonsense when it's juxtaposed with a hero's-journey-type plot arc, putting the Mary Sue in the role of the hero of the adventure, as in the Star Wars sequels and many other recent examples.

In reference to loneliness being a tax for those with a complex mind, I think it is true. You just have access to a network of deep and interesting thinkers. The average person is more or less at the mercy of their local environment (not considering online social groups; which as you know, are not sufficient substitutes for in-person interactions)

This is a great video and I love a lot of the points you make. However, I feel like the male vs female self-improvement point was grossly over-reductive and doesn't consider a ton of important nuances (i.e., social media idolizing "sigmas" that are realistically just horrible people). Something I think about a lot is if the male self-improvement approach is so great, why do we have so many more rampant mental health issues and unaddressed problematic behaviors? Regardless, I may not agree with some of your ideologies, but you present your information as unbiased as possible and I can appreciate that effort and I can tell you're trying to help everyone out.

04:49 Opinions are superficial, simply second hand baggage with gapping holes, to which those picking them up are too blind to see. We do not need knowledge as such, we need insight and intelligence. Both of which burn brightly enough to give clarity in this dark world, given the opportunity. Thinking itself is not actually the great facility for which most give it credence. Thinking is always the limited approaching the unlimited, the known blanketing the unknown. Memory is the basis of all thought. However, I suggest there is a far more integral way, awareness. When we realize whatever within ourselves, that is entirely different from accepting information imparted by others. The latter leads to superficiality, to arrogance with the assumption that "I know". Very few know anything, merely regurgitate. Knowing has its own action.

21:38 Your Life Should be Led by Design, Not by Default. Most would claim to live by design but are merely attempting to fit into a system not of their own making... seeking wealth, seeking fame, etc. Very few ever look at life at its default setting. Only when we actually understand the basics of life can we actually live. Most are willing functional machines for the system of capitalism, or whatever system wherever; so-called communism, religions, etc. By choosing a life for yourself, you only set up imbalance and needless conflict. Calling such growth is delusional, is it anything other than a rat on a wheel?
